General

  • Comfy and cosy glamping accommodation three miles from Newtonmore
  • Fishing, cycling, mountain biking and golf all available nearby
  • Heating, kitchen kit, fridge and CD players in all units

What gorgeous glamping units are these: you'll be curled up snoozing inside as comfy as a feline before a roaring fire.

The peaceful and remote site of Wildcat Gypsy Caravans at Invernahavon Caravan Park is three miles from Newtonmore in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, and within the Cairngorms National Park with heaps of golfing, fishing, walking and cycling as outdoorsy things to do.

All is most comfy and cosy on base when you totter in after a day's activities: all the glamping units come with heating, kitchen equipment and a fridge, a CD player and a patio: bring the discs, put on your fave and sit outside with a wine or beer to sup the spectacular views.

Guests also have access to toilets and hot showers, kept immaculate by the dedicated owners, as well as a washing-up area, washing machine and tumble dryer.

We arrived soaking wet on two motorbikes. The little caravan was so pretty and perfect. It had everything in it we needed and nothing we didn't need. The site is easy to access, peaceful and beautiful. The facilities clean and adequate. There were laundry machines and driers! A perfect few days away. The Scottish Wildlife Centre near Kinussie gave us a perfect day as well.

We LOVED the easy check-in, the phenomenal location, the wonderful toilet /shower facilities at campground, the little extras like coffee, tea, and biscuits. It was so whimsical to sleep in a gypsy caravan, cosy too!

    Disliked:

We would have liked some hooks on which to hang towels etc. I suggest a warning about cooking with gas in an enclosed space.

From the manager...

Thanks very much for your good review - we are really pleased you enjoyed it so much. You must have meant the inside when you said that some hooks would have been nice as there were 2 hooks on the veranda outside for hanging things - we can maybe look at putting some in the inside if there is enough space, thanks again, Lynn

My three children and I stayed in the Shepherd's Hut for one night. It was a great experience! Everything had been thought of (including a fan to keep us cool in the 26 degree heat!) The site was immaculately clean and well laid out. Would 100% recommend and we'll be back for sure!

Thank you for your great review. I don't think the fan has been so well used as it has this year, the weather has been so good. Hopefully we will see you again, Lynn

Local attractions

Bring walking boots and outdoor gear, for there's loads to do in this locale.

As with most places in Scotland, golfing is well represented and there are several courses to pick from within a 30-mile radius: take your pick from Newtonmore, Kingussie, Boat of Garten, Grantown on Spey, Carrbridge (nine-hole) and the Spey Valley championship course in Aviemore.

The Wildcat team points out there are too many cycling routes in the area to mention, but particularly recommends riding in and around the Glen Truim, Etteridge and Phones estates and, further afield, around Loch Insh and on the Rothiemurchus and Alvie estates. Basecamp Mountain Bike at Laggan Wolftrax has over four miles of black routes and around three miles of beginners' trails to tackle.

For walking, several routes start in and around Newtonmore – ask Eck or Lynne for details – and you'll find miles and miles more around the Cairngorms, Gynack Walk, Corrieyarrick Pass and Badenoch Way, just to start you off.

And for angling, pick up a permit at outlets in Newtonmore or the surrounding villages and make your way to the Badenoch stretch of the Spey, 13 miles of river to try for brown trout, sea trout and occasional salmon.

Excellent indoor options in the area are the Highland Folk Museum and the Clan Macpherson Museum, both in Newtonmore, while a few local musts are the Cairngorm funicular railway (the highest funicular railway in Britain) with scenery to make your jaw drop; the ZSS Highland Wildlife Park six miles away at Kincraig, and Landmark Forest Adventure Park, landing you and the family a topping day out.

Must see

  • Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre (21.1 miles)
  • Blair Castle (21.1 miles)
  • Urquhart Castle (22.5 miles)
