General

  • Handcrafted gypsy caravans three miles from Newtonmore
  • Well-equipped vans with electric stove, cooking stove and CD player
  • Fishing, cycling, mountain biking and golf all available nearby

What gorgeous gypsy caravans are these: you'll be curled up snoozing inside as comfy as a feline before a roaring fire…

The peaceful and remote site of Wildcat Gypsy Caravans at Invernahavon Caravan Park is three miles from Newtonmore in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, and within the Cairngorms National Park with heaps of golfing, fishing, walking and cycling as outdoorsy things to do.

All is most comfy and cosy on base when you totter in after a day's activities, as the caravans here are handcrafted, bigger than the average gypsy caravan (14ft instead of 9ft) and equipped in cosy comfy style for up to four people, with seating, an electric stove for chilly nights, grill, fridge, sink, gas cooking stove, cooking utensils and crockery. There's a CD player too, so bring the discs, put on your fave and sit outside with a wine or beer to sup the spectacular views.

Gypsy caravan guests also have access to loos and hot showers, kept immaculate by the dedicated owners, a washing-up area, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Stunning scenery takes you to this lovely site, the red gypsy caravan was ready and waiting, even though we arrived early. Very sweet little caravan which was very well equipped. Facilities on the site were lovely and clean with a small play area for children (not that we had any with us) - the lady who rents the caravans arrived a short while after us to check that everything was ok. Would love to return.

Small, but comfortable, handy for the A9 06/08/2017

Convenient for us, as not far from the A9, so handy as we were travelling home to Orkney. Also, dogs are accepted.
Tea, coffee, milk and a couple of biscuits had been left for us (untouched, see below) - which was a lovely thought, thank you.

    Disliked:

Nobody on reception; although a welcome note had been left for me, when we arrived at 8pm our booked caravan was occupied by a family from Germany who had turned up on spec, seen a key and empty lodgings and made themselves at home. All was sorted amicably, but as there was no-one at reception next morning (the hours are 6am to 8.45am, and we got there at 9am, just missed them) I couldn't let anyone know what had happened.
NB; Wifi is limited and mobile signal is non-existent, which is not the sites fault, just letting other customers know.

From the manager...

Hi Trevor, we are really sorry that you had this problem when you arrived. Wildcat Gypsy Caravans are separate to the Caravan Site so it is no fault of the Site that you weren't able to get in touch with anyone.

I thought I had asked Pitch Up to put a note when a customers' confirmation of booking is sent to them saying that the caravan will be open and the name on the door with our contact details so I will make sure this is being done. We do it this way as we do not live on site but stay in Newtonmore, which is approximately 3 miiles away, and we never know what time customers will turn up so it seemed the easiest way to solve the problem.

I would also apologise for there being someone in the caravan when you arrived, this has never happened before and hopefully won't again, most people seeing a name on the door would realise it was booked but maybe being from another Country didn't help - I note from your review that you would come back again so we are very pleased it didn't totally put you off, again our contact details are on the welcome notice for anyone staying with us, Lynn

Local attractions

Bring walking boots and outdoor gear, for there's loads to do in this locale whatever floats your boat activity-wise.

As with most places in Scotland, golfing is well represented and there are several courses to pick from within a 30-mile radius: take your pick from Newtonmore, Kingussie, Boat of Garten, Grantown on Spey, Carrbridge (nine-hole) and the Spey Valley championship course in Aviemore.

The Wildcat team point out there are too many cycling routes in the area to mention, but particularly recommend riding in and around the Glen Truim, Etteridge and Phones estates and, further afield, around Loch Insh and on the Rothiemurchus and Alvie estates. Basecamp Mountain Bike at Laggan Wolftrax has over 6km of black routes and almost 5km of beginners' trails to tackle.

For walking, several routes start in and around Newtonmore – ask Eck or Lynne for details – and you'll find miles and miles more around the Cairngorms, Gynack Walk, Corrieyarrick Pass and Badenoch Way, just to start you off.

And for angling, pick up a permit at outlets in Newtonmore or the surrounding villages and make your way to the Badenoch stretch of the Spey, 13 miles of river to try for brown trout, sea trout and occasional salmon.

Excellent indoor options in the area are the Highland Folk Museum and the Clan Macpherson Museum, both in Newtonmore, while a few local musts are the Cairngorm funicular railway (the highest funicular railway in Britain) with scenery to make your jaw drop; the ZSS Highland Wildlife Park six miles away at Kincraig, and Landmark Forest Adventure Park, landing you and the family a topping day out.

Must see

  • Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre (21.1 miles)
  • Blair Castle (21.1 miles)
  • Urquhart Castle (22.5 miles)
