- Luxury and sole-use Highlands site with private garden and sea views
- Fossil hunts, salmon fishing and beach walks within 10 minutes' drive
- Fully self-contained yurt with bathroom, kitchen and barbecue
After tiptop times at the top of Scotland? Make tracks to The Tall Pines Yurt, a luxurious and private little pad with sea views in the Scottish Highlands, a five-minute drive from the town of Helmsdale.
As befits the surroundings, this is a yurt fit for clan chieftains, if not monarchs, made of sheep's wool felt for seeing off the fiercest of northerly weather fronts and kitted out inside with a powerful woodburning stove. Fret not about trudging to some distant shower block in the morning either: there’s a canny wee bathroom attached, with a shower, compost toilet and sink.
Bring food, clothes and a toothbrush is the advice of the proprietors, who ensure everything else is provided for your stay, from pots and pans to tea and coffee, and toilet roll to logs and firelighters.
On balmy summer evenings, you can skip the cooker in the kitchen and fire up the barbecue in the private garden; sip a glass of something chilled as the sausages sizzle, and look out for seals splashing in the Moray Firth.
After all the sea air and the active stuff you’ll be up to, you’ll sleep like a baby but you can rest even easier knowing how little impact your handsome outdoor lodgings are having on the environment: everything’s off grid and solar powered.
Open from 16/03/2019 to 29/09/2019

Please do not rely on sat nav as all the properties on the hill have the same postcode. Follow the directions below, and by ensuring that you keep the sea on your left, hopefully you should not go wrong:
As you approach Helmsdale on the A9, take the turn-off signposted Station/Marrell/West Helmsdale. This is on your left before the Helmsdale Bridge if travelling from the South and on the right after crossing the bridge if travelling from the North. Immediately after you turn there is a sharp left turn-off. Take this road which leads up the hill, and follow it (ignoring any side-roads) until it levels out and straightens. On your right you will see a white house with green windows, surrounded by trees, with high hedges in front, and two driveways. The yurt's parking bay is by the second driveway.
For beach walks, head into Helmsdale where the rocky shoreline is a top spot for fossil hunting. If you prefer to feel sand between your toes, the beaches of Loth and Brora have plenty going spare, both 15 minutes’ drive away; be sure to take binoculars as oystercatchers and herons populate the shore and dolphins and seals are regularly spotted at sea.
If not fired up by fossils, try panning for gold at Kildonan Burn (20 minutes): permits are sold in Helmsdale and you never know your luck... For those more fortunate with rod and line, bumper times await on the banks of the Helmsdale river: get a day permit and go after the salmon and sea trout.
Dunrobin Castle 25 minutes’ drive away, has been the seat of the Earls of Sutherland for 700 years; it’s a grand pile full of treasures, and the combination of its conical spires and Versailles-style gardens make it more like a château.
You can learn all about the noble history and pedigree of Scotch whisky on tours and tastings at numerous renowned local distilleries: 15 minutes away, Clynekiln is conveniently close, while Glenmorangie and Pulteney are 45 minutes and an hour.
For selfie taking, postcard sending or just to say you’ve been, John O’Groats is an hour and 15 minutes away; you can go further north though, taking in the views and the wildlife at Dunnet Head RSPB reserve and lighthouse.
