  • Wildlife haven in the Findhorn valley in rural Morayshire
  • Whitewater rafting, canoeing, fishing, paintball and lots more on site
  • Outdoor camp kitchen with firepits and log stools
What an ace site this is… tucked into the Findhorn valley in rural Morayshire, with accommodation spots hidden all around and loads to do right on site, including whitewater rafting, tubing, canoeing and kayaking, salmon fishing, paintball, disc golf… Turn up with your other half, the family or your friends to stay some days here and take in the countryside, scenery and activities: there are plenty of scenic strolls around the surrounding countryside woodlands and river paths to spot deer, owls and other native birds or red squirrels (the team recommends wanders in the early morning or the evenings for the best sightings). Facilities include a purpose-built toilet and shower block a few minutes' walk from the pitches. Guests can also use the outdoor camp kitchen, which has a communal firepit, a sink, a two-ring gas camp cooker, a huge table and several log stools sawn from a nearby fallen tree (now that's some top recycling…) There's also a small shop on site selling camping essentials, drinks and chocolate (another essential).

Local attractions

You'll probably want to stay on site for a few days to try out all the activities right on site (you might rather fancy the frisbee golf), but once ready to explore the area, another plethora of things to see and do is within easy reach. Take the walk from Ace to the nearby beauty spot of Randolph's Leap (you might rather fancy this too) and on to the Logie Steading Visitor Centre with its café, artisan shops, play park, heritage centre and the Logie House Gardens for starters… Other options in the immediate area are visiting the pretty local town of Forres (did you know this is where Duncan's castle was in the Scottish play...?) and some most excellent salmon and trout fishing on the River Findhorn. The art and antiques of Brodie Castle are just outside Forres, or your crew could take a wildlife trip around Moray Firth to see dolphins, whales, porpoises, sharks, seals and flocks of seabirds. Nairn Beach, where a school of dolphins are often visible from the coastline, is about eight and a half miles from your ace base.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Lovely woodland setting with good toilet facilities for the number of people and friendly staff. We bought some wood for the firepit on a cold night.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Perfect forest location, plenty of space and fire pits beside the pitch area. There's plenty of space between the pitches too. Toilets were spotless and showers were also spotless and plenty hot water.

Disliked: We arrived well before 7pm but there was no one around at reception and no allocated pitches so just weren't sure where to go. Handy information at reception though, and we just chose a pitch and got set up.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Nice set up. It was quiet when i visited with it being the very start of the season. Ben (i think that was his name) was very helpful. Pitches were good. Logs for the fire were a little large so bring an axe or a good knife!

Disliked: The sitting area around the fires was just pure mud as the grass has been worn away. Thankfully it was dry when i visited but imagine in the wet its very muddy!

From the manager: Thank you for your review - woodland camping .We are sorry the logs were on the large size, we do have a log splitter on site where a member of staff can assist with this.

Bell tent

Liked: Staff were super friendly, easy to talk with. Had a great convo with them. A lot of freedom around the site, no feeling of being unwelcome. Felt like meeting up with friends. We rented a bell tent. Very clean! Wood provided on site if needed. They offered us sleeping bags and other necessities if we needed them and did not expect anything for it which was fantastic and provides an amazing atmosphere. Facilities on site were excellent. Water was easy with toilet and shower facilities close to the tent. Beautiful scenery all around and very little noise from things such as cars and loud unnatural noises. We were free to come and go as we pleased with no time restriction on the site. Our belongings were secure as there are cameras in certain parts of the site. Do not panic, there are no cameras around your camping area.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a lovely stay at Ace Hideaways, the shepherd's itself was very comfy and cosy - the log burner did a fantastic job of keeping it warm. After a couple of nights of wild camping before we arrived it was pure luxury. The location of our shepherd's hut was beautiful, surrounded by really nice diverse woodland which was full of birds and wildlife. We couldn't see anyone else from our spot and it really felt like we were alone in the woods, even though the shower and toilet block was no more than a 5 minute walk away! The showers and toilets were very clean, and there was always hot water. The parking throughout the site was great, and although other reviews have mentioned the lane it was really well maintained - my car is pretty low and I had no trouble at all. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful, we felt welcome from the minute we arrived. The surrounding area has lots to offer too, if you're into nature and walking this is the perfect base as there's so many different habitats to explore in the area. We'll definitely be back!
