  • Pitch up in the grounds of a country house
  • At the foot of Fionn Bheinn and central to several other munros
  • A 10-minute walk from the local train station
It’s back to basics with a difference at Ledgowan Lodge, where guests can stay in the grounds of a country house in the Scottish Highlands. Ledgowan is a small self-catering bunkhouse in Achnasheen, central to several munros and on the North Coast 500 route. It sleeps five guests in five rooms, each guest having their own room with wash basin. There's a communal bathroom and kitchen as well as a dining area with TV, and the bunkhouse is fully centrally heated so is toasty and warm even in the cold wet winter months. (Please note that guests staying on the pitches don't have access to the bunkhouse facilities, except the shower, toilet and water supply.) If you're travelling without a car it's worth noting that the folks at Ledgowan will even pick guests up from public transport, although as the train station at Achnasheen is only a 10-minute walk away it might be preferable to amble to the site instead and take in the local landscape…

Electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: an unusual location right outside a four star hotel. not really a site in the normal sensce of the word, but none the less i would have no complaints about facilities in the nearby bunkhouse. very friendly staff and a treat to sit in the hotel for a coffee.

Disliked: only one critisism strong sewerage smell coming from the nearby bunkhouse, possibly due to the current building work.

Liked: Isolated location, very friendly helpful person contactable by phone

Disliked: Value for money out of season wasn’t great- I’d consider staying again out of season for a lower price. Considering this pitch is just a space with EH by the side of a main road. Would have been happy with that price if the restaurant was open so we could take full advantage of the facilities, however appreciate we booked out of season. The price could reflect this

Local attractions

As well as fishing available on site, Ledgowan is close to a range of Highland highlights including golf, horse riding, climbing and mountain biking. The village of Achnasheen has a studio gallery and café, and can be used as a base for exploring most of the Highlands from Kinlochewe and Gairloch to the west, Lochcarron to the south west and the glacial deltas of the Achnasheen Terraces to the south. The site is within easy driving distance of several mountain ranges including the Torridon and Fannich ranges, and the mountain Fionn Bheinn is on the doorstep. Cycle hire is available on site for those who prefer to explore on two wheels, or if exploring by foot there are several longish walking trails around the area. Attractions such as the Official Loch Ness Monster Exhibition and events including the Ullapool Guitar Festival are about half an hour’s drive away, or if you want to stick closer to home, there’s the option of doing what many visitors to Ledgowan do, and zipping up the hill on a quad bike…
