General

  • Within walking distance of three sandy beaches
  • Spectacular scenery on the Rockcliffe coastline
  • Laundry room, lockable bike shed, play area and barbecue area

Here’s an interesting factoid with which to flummox your friends: it wasn’t just famous seaside resorts like Brighton and Bournemouth where well-to-do Victorian types hung out for their hols. Oh no. They sallied north as well, to the gorgeous coastline of Rockcliffe in Dumfries and Galloway for its warm climate, wealth of walks and unsullied scenery. Jolly sensible of them, of course and something of which even fierce social critic Charles Dickens might have approved.

Twenty-first century sorts seeking the same high standards should sally forth to Rockcliffe’s Castle Point Caravan Site, set a short stroll from the sea and within easy ambling distance of three sandy beaches – and with some of the best views in the area. Which for Scotland is saying quite a lot...

On site, guests will find a laundry room with washing machines and dryers, washing-up areas, a lockable bike shed, a play area for the kids and a barbecue area with seating. For provisions, a well-stocked food shop is about a mile away at Colvend and a couple of small supermarkets are around six miles away in Dalbeattie.

A lovely site with great views and good walks on doorstep. The shower block was kept clean and had fantastic hot and powerful showers. The lady on reception was very friendly and welcoming and offered us a hard standing pitch as we were in a motor home and the grass was very wet. Free wifi. Good value for money. Would definitely recommend and will return if we are ever in this area again.

    Disliked:

Only had 3 hard standing pitches so in busy periods would be hard to get in as grass was very boggy.

A clean, friendly site in a beautiful location. 08/09/2017

The site is in a stunning location, and even with the water nearby, the pitches are well drained and level. Boggy areas are marked and cordoned off for campers benefit.
Parking is on hard standing close to the pitches.
The facilities are clean and well maintained, staff friendly and helpful. The local area also has useful shops and friendly folk.
There are some winding single track roads in this area, with regular passing places. It is not a road to rush. Everybody you meet will attempt to find the nearest passing place and so should you. A gesture of friendly greeting is normal whether you give way or have been given the priority. It soon becomes clear that no other method other than cooperation will work.
The location is perfect for visiting Skye and lots of local information is provided at the site, with details of attractions and places to eat.

    Disliked:

A micro-climate with plenty of water nearby is a midge heaven. Be prepared for them. People have sworn by various repellants but your best defence is to cover up with a face net and long sleeves. Mostly they are not a problem but if conditions are good for them, beware!
Of course this is not the fault of the site and it is the price you pay for such a beautiful location.

Brilliant quiet site with large pitching spaces you can select yourselves. From one side of the camping field you have a beautiful view of the beach. The other side is more sheltered by fields contains cows. The site is in a remote location with very little activities accessable via foot. Plenty of walks can be taken along the coast to neighboring towns and a stunning beach is located at castle point. Toilets and shower facilities where kept clean and tidy. The owners where very friendly, helpful and welcoming. This was our French bulldogs first holiday and he loved it. Will definitely be staying at this site again.

    Disliked:

There wasn't a small shop on the site and the closest shop was just over a mile away in the nearby village. Wasn't a massive problem but insight shop would of been handy for the little bits you forget / run out off.

Directions

Either follow the A711 to Dalbeattie and then the A710 to Rockcliffe (recommended if you have a caravan) or the A710 from Dumfries, for a more scenic trip. Follow the signs to Rockcliffe. At the brow of the hill just as you pass the Rockcliffe sign, turn left down Barcloy Road. Follow the road straight onto the farm road. The entrance to the caravan site is in the farmyard.

Local attractions

Walking and wildlife are the order of the day here: clamber along the cliffs from Castle Point to Rockcliffe and along the Jubilee Path up the Muckle Knowe; you can also walk along the causeway at low tide from Kippford to Rough Island and its bird sanctuary or take to the hills at Screel, Bengairn and beyond.

To be even more strenuous than Scottish hillwalking, follow the signposted trail from Rockcliffe village and climb the Motte of Mark for some stunning views over the Urr estuary and beyond to the Lake District and the Isle of Man.

As for wildlife, the area is full of species to stare at, including butterflies, bluebells and summer swallows, with Dumfries and Galloway an all-round nature haven: try the Galloway Red Kite Trail, stamping around with the stags at the Galloway Forest Park, looking for small critters in the beach rockpools or seeing the seabirds from the RSPB centre at the Mull of Galloway.

Remember to flummox your friends with another Random Rockcliffe Fact: a very rare species of ladybird was discovered here in 2011, named Subcoccinella vigintiquattuorpunctata after the 24 spots on its wings – bonus points if you can say that very quickly.

If you prefer two wheels rather than two feet, Castle Point is close to the 7stanes, the seven mountain biking trails across the south of Scotland and there are numerous cycle trails nearby.

Other active options in the area include pony trekking, fishing, sailing and tennis – Kippford is a well-known sailing centre and there are watersports, archery and other activities at Galloway Activity Centre and the Laggan Outdoor Centre. There are several nine- and 18-hole golf courses within reach too, with the closest at Colvend Golf Club on the Solway Coast.

After all that activity, relax and fill up with the many flavours of fresh Dumfries and Galloway produce: have a wander around the foodie village of Castle Douglas or stock up on the famous Cream of Galloway ice cream near the village – there’s an ice cream factory here with an indoor activity centre for rainy days.
