General

  • Spacious parkland with views over the Solway Firth and Lake District
  • Pools, Jacuzzi, sauna, café, bar and free wifi
  • Close to Scotland's most southerly golf course

Ever seen the film The Wicker Man? If at any point you found yourself admiring the stunning Scottish scenery among the sense of impending celluloid doom (understandable), you'll probably be interested to know that the scenic setting in question was the village of Burrowhead on the Solway Firth.

And in Burrowhead is Burrowhead Holiday Village, a park in this scenic setting that's in a spacious hundred acres of parkland with views over the Solway Firth to the Isle of Man and the hills of the Lake District. This is activity land – sea fishing, golf and coastal walks are all very close to hand – and there's plenty to do on site too as Burrowhead has an indoor and a summer outdoor pool, a Jacuzzi and a sauna.

Let the kids loose at the play area, crazy golf, amusement arcade, soft play area, ball pool playroom and toddler splash pool with slide; the park also has pitch and putt golf, a putting green, a snooker room with licensed bar, and an adults-only function room.

A shop is there if you want to buy food and fire up your own cooker, but if not, Burrowhead Holiday Village has a well-priced café serving big breakfasts and other meals. Drinks and entertainment are sorted at the Headland family bar, which also has free wifi.

Burrowhead Holiday Village has a private water supply and they recommend that guests boil the water before consumption.

Please note dogs or pets are not permitted in The Old Peat House guest room, but are welcome on the main site for a small fee.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Groups of single-sex parties are not accepted via Pitchup.com.

The site has a private water supply - it's recommend that you boil the water before consumption.

The outdoor pool is open in July and August only.

Fantastic views from cliff-top path, well stocked (and reasonably priced) shop and great facilities.

    Disliked:

Tent pitch was rocky base with only about 2-3 inches of grass/soil ontop which meant the normal pegs wouldn't go in! 😡 Also didn't know about the £10 deposit for a key to the toilet block...

We were nearly put off by some of the bad reviews on here. But so glad we went in the end. Very friendly staff, good facilities, good food (especially the steak pie) and one of the best views of any campsite we've stayed in.

Wasn't of interest to us but appeared to be plenty for kids to do. Grounds were well kept with some nice cliff top walks marked out.

    Disliked:

Nothing to complain about at all.

Overall a good site with great location. Pitch we had looked on to the sea. Good walks. Mary in shop was great and although we arrived close to closing time at lunch she kept cafe open and fed us. Big plus there. The site toilets were kept clean and tidy. Site itself kept clean. Entertainment team tried hard to please everyone however at night had to compeat with a large number of noisy children to be heard.
Suggest having an adult only bar also. Overall a well run site with friendly staff.

    Disliked:

The road into site has a number of potholes which need to be repaired. Some parts like crazy golf could do with a coat of paint and weeds removed.

Stunning location and a team of hard working staff who made our stay fabulous. The residents we met at this site made us so welcome and we felt like part of a big family. Sadly the weather was not too great but this gave the rugged coastline a whole new life of it's own with the scenery ever changing, it is absolutely breathtaking. Please do not let some of the picky reviews stop you going, if you want 5 star luxury it's not going to happen just accept this beautiful piece of land with all it has to offer for what it is and in our opinion perfection.

Spent a lovely 2 weeks here, cheap and cheerful. exploring the surrounding areas as there are lots of places to see and attractions to visit. The staff were very helpful and friendly and would put their self out to help you in whatever ways they could. The entertainment was very good on a weekend starting with entertainment for the younger ones and then moving on to Bingo and live entertainment for all. Bar open till 1 on a weekend but 11 during the week. Nice cafe/Take away providing big portions and reasonably priced. Lovely views over looking the sea. would stay again but not in a tent.

    Disliked:

Electric grass pitches not very level unless you pitch near the clifftop which is what we did but the site is prone to very high winds the majority of the time which is the only reason we would put off from returning, which is a shame as there is nothing the site can do to prevent this apart from maybe provide some sheltered pitches.
This site is more suitable for caravans and motor homes unfortunately due to the high winds. We had to travel to Dumfries on more than 1 occasion which is 2 hours drive to purchase 3 storm kits and other items to secure the tent as I had visions of us flying over the cliff and into the sea, If the tent survived that long. Fortunately for us the tent survived but would not risk it again.
No phone signal or internet, due to location.
    No drinking water on site.
Having said these dislikes none of them spoiled our holiday.

Local attractions

If you're up for some angling, cast off from rocks, boats or loch near Burrowhead Holiday Village; fishing off the rocks is allowed at the Burrowhead coast and at the local beaches.

This is top birdwatching territory too, so look out/up for birds when you're around this part of coast, and it's prime dark skies land for stargazing afterwards.

Popular attractions in the area are Bladnoch Distillery, Galloway Forest Park, the book town of Wigtown and the Cream o' Galloway amusement park and dairy farm producing topping ice cream.

Nearby Whithorn is where Christianity in Scotland evolved under the leadership of St Ninian; the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre and St Ninian's Cave are the main tourist draws.

Other nearby days out could include the 75 acres of child-friendly Castle Kennedy Gardens; a look at the inhabitants of Logan Fish Pond and of Monreith Animal World, and the zipwire, Segway and more at the activity centre of Laggan Outdoor.

Finally, the port of Stranraer is about 30 miles away: sail to Larne in Northern Ireland from here and drive along the coast to have a day in Belfast.
