  • Spacious parkland with views over the Solway Firth and Lake District
  • Jacuzzi, sauna, café, bar, crazy golf and play area
  • Close to Scotland's most southerly golf course
Ever seen the film The Wicker Man? If at any point you found yourself admiring the stunning Scottish scenery among the sense of impending celluloid doom (understandable), you'll probably be interested to know that the scenic setting in question was the village of Burrowhead on the Solway Firth. And in Burrowhead is Burrowhead Holiday Village, a park in this scenic setting that's in a spacious hundred acres of parkland with views over the Solway Firth to the Isle of Man and the hills of the Lake District. This is activity land – sea fishing, golf and coastal walks are all very close to hand – and there's space to chill out back on site too as Burrowhead has a Jacuzzi and a sauna. Let the kids loose at the play area, crazy golf, amusement arcade, soft play area, ball pool playroom and toddler splash pool with slide; the park also has pitch and putt golf, a putting green, a snooker room with licensed bar, and an adults-only function room. A shop is there if you want to buy food and fire up your own cooker, but if not, Burrowhead Holiday Village has a well-priced café serving big breakfasts and other meals. Drinks and entertainment are sorted at the Headland family bar. There is wifi throughout the site. Burrowhead Holiday Village has a private water supply and they recommend that guests boil the water before consumption. Dogs are welcome on site but won't be allowed in the amenity buildings.

From the manager: We are sorry that your experience fell short of our high expectations. Our bar is currently open five days a week, and our shop six days per week. Unfortunately your stay with us coincided with the closure days. BT OpenReach are currently undertaking major works in the area which is affecting WiFi connection.

We stayed here for 4 nights, nice site over looking the sea…

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We stayed here for 4 nights, nice site over looking the sea with lovely cliff top walks n a wee visit to Isle of Whithorn was also lovely

Disliked: The showers were freezing- reported this n was told it would get fixed - but never did, thank goodness we have our own shower in the caravan- also the electricity kept going off in our caravan- we had to keep going up to reception to report this, the WiFi was also very poor! The indoor pool n sauna was closed which again was very disappointing!!

From the manager: We are sorry that your experience fell short of our high expectations. The showers were fixed whilst you were on-site with us and during this time yourself and other holiday makers were offered alternative showering facitilies in the chalets. This offer you declined. The electricity on the touring field was tripped by another caravan user and we worked with them to resolve the issue. The WiFi was down across the whole area/village. BT OpenReach were working to resolve the issues and restore connection. This was beyond our control

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The camp grounds and facilities was very clean, cafe food was amazing (try the chili loaded fries). staff around the camp (reception and cafe) were friendly and helpful. Seaview and cliff tops was gorgeous! Free hit and miss wifi

Disliked: How people taking up a whole 4 piece EHU to one or two touring caravans not leaving enough room around the EHU inbetween them or round the back. We were told not to park on pitch A as it was boggy and a lot of water on it meant we could get stuck so told us to park on the back area of pitch B but not the front of pitch B because of the awning and they didnt want people hitting the underground cable for the electric but yet 4 motorhomes pulled up all with awnings that were put up on the bit we were told not too and no one come to tell them. I recommend taking a really long EHU cable. We ended up having to park a motorhome with a awning in front of someone's residential caravan just so we use the electric port. This issue could be resolved if someone was to come check the pitches and giving someone an exact pitch number would help people instead of having to find a space to park in and make sure people are not hogging the EHU area. We were told we could park on a static slot but we would need to drive around and find one after driving for 5 hours to get there the last we wanted to do was drive around a site looking for somewhere to park. Again this could be resolved with actual pitch allocation. After the first day the wifi didn't work at all and no signal either.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Stunning location, great walks in very peaceful surroundings. Clubhouse great for kids.

Disliked: This is a big site with one shower and toilet block tucked out of the way, blocked toilets, blocked and overflowing elsan point and showers hit and miss to whether they were hot. This is ultimately what we were paying for as can wild camp as have done so on this coastline with council run toilets which are cleaner and free.

From the manager: We are sorry that your experience fell short of our high expectations. The shower and toilet blocks are checked regularly and any issues are recified immediately that they come to our attention. The hot water supply to the showers suffered a fault which was swiftly rectified. Holiday makers were offered alternative showering facilites in our chalets to help overcome the issue.

Liked: Customer service was fantastic. The walks along the cliff tops are amazing. Truly a beautiful sight. Seemed to be a lot to do for families in the warmer months.

Disliked: Glass pitches in wet season means you may get stuck in the mud.. luckily they are happy to tow you out of the mud.

Local attractions

If you're up for some angling, cast off from rocks, boats or loch near Burrowhead Holiday Village; fishing off the rocks is allowed at the Burrowhead coast and at the local beaches. All of this scenery lends itself well to walks as well: once you've wandered along the coast a bit, try the trails at Kirroughtree and through the Galloway Forest Park. This is top birdwatching territory too, so look out/up for birds when you're around this part of coast, and it's prime dark skies land for stargazing afterwards. Popular attractions in the area are Bladnoch Distillery, Galloway Forest Park, the book town of Wigtown and the Cream o' Galloway, a dairy farm that produces topping ice cream and has a crazy golf course. Nearby Whithorn is where Christianity in Scotland evolved under the leadership of St Ninian; the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre and St Ninian's Cave are the main tourist draws. Other nearby days out could include the 75 acres of child-friendly Castle Kennedy Gardens; a look at the inhabitants of Monreith Animal World, and the watersports and activities of Galloway Activity Centre (about an hour away). Finally, the port of Cairnryan is about 40 miles away: sail to Larne in Northern Ireland from here and drive along the coast to have a day in Belfast.
