General

  • Spacious family and pet-friendly park with a country park feel
  • Indoor pool, café, lounge bar, amusement room and fitness room
  • Sandy beach, 18-hole golf course, fishing, pony treks and more

If the kids say they’re bored at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park at Kirkcudbright on the Dumfries and Galloway coast, you might want to send them home.

Sublime sea views, heaps of on-site activities, six fishing ponds, a private beach and around 1200 acres of also-sublime countryside walks on the doorstep are all here all year round, tucked on a secluded and peaceful peninsula with views over the Irish Sea – this is possibly the most viewsome round of golf you’ll ever play (before you read on, see for yourself from the site pics). It's pretty spectacular by night too, as the setting among Galloway's dark skies means the stargazing here is stellar: the subdued lighting on site means you can see it all at its best.

Pretty much everything you could want is on site or very close by: if golf at the 18-hole Brighouse Bay Holiday Park championship course or free coarse fishing doesn’t float your boat, wander over the working livestock farm, along the coast (camera very much essential), through acres’ worth of signposted hikes through the local woodland… or launch a kayak from the bay’s all-tide slipway or a boat onto the pond, take the kids for a pony trek, angle for sea fish from the rocks or just sit and drink in the views with a drink from the on-site lounge bar…

If the weather should be less than co-operative during your stay, stay undercover at the park’s Jacuzzi, steam room, fitness room, indoor pool with separate splashing area for toddlers or indoor amusement room with mini 10-pin bowling; once the weather starts co-operating again, roll along to the all-weather bowling green. (Weather forecasts, news and essentials like Facebook and the like can be checked via the free wifi at the Brighouse Bay Holiday Park café.)

Also on site – yes, there’s more – the well-stocked shop keeps guests sorted for essentials and the licensed bistro serves hot and cold meals and snacks to have there or in the family lounge bar (both are licensed).

Environmentally-friendly and award-winning Brighouse is teeming with wildlife and has been set up to have a country park feel. This extends to picking your pitch wherever tickles your fancy: by the up to date clean facilities, beside the play area to keep out a beady eye, or tucked away in a quiet corner of the touring field. Wardens are on site if you need any help or info during your stay.

Also on site are two amenities blocks with ensuite cubicles for families, plus separate ladies and gents' sections in the larger block. One block is open in winter and is centrally heated; both have laundry and dishwashing facilities.

Feeling just a tad bamboozled by all the options on offer? Make a visit to reception your first stop, where staff can offer suggestions on what to do and see in the surrounding area while you stock up on leaflets, maps and gifts.

Great open spaced pitches with some privacy 20/08/2017

Space between pitches. Semi-private & lots of room. Park was well maintained with drinking water taps & areas for rubbish plentiful.

    Disliked:

Unisex toilet/shower blocks. These do need modernised, as they now look grubby no matter how much they are cleaned. Never felt comfortable letting our 10 year old girl go there on her own. Shame, as this could make this an excellent park. Ate once at the golf club & it was really nice and moderately priced.

lovely setting with direct beach access, facilities good. 16/08/2017

  • Liked:

Lovely setting set in small groups surrounded by trees and shrubs, pitches reasonably level and of a good size, toilet facilities were clean and well laid out, the unisex en suit facilities were very good with plenty of hot water even though the site was busy. The site borders a mature woodland that access the beach and the sea, beautiful for walking in the evening and direct access to a lovely sandy beach. We would go here again but not in the main school holidays.

    Disliked:

No complaint about the site in general however irresponsible parents who's children were causing nuisance late at night were creating problems that meant the wardens had to do evening patrols to curb the noise, there is a 10.30 curfew for the playground, this should be telling parents to gather their offspring when it gets dark and know where they are. We were here with our children and grandchildren and are certainly not anti kids but please keep your little mites under control.

Local attractions

Fancy a canter? Brighouse Bay Trekking Centre is adjacent to Brighouse Bay Holiday Park, offering horse riding for all ages and abilities (weather dependent and seasonal) from fully trained staff; ask at the holiday park reception for details.

Elsewhere, Dumfries and Galloway is packed with pursuits for all ages and interests – and it must be pointed out here that the ice cream and nature trails of the Cream O’Galloway ice cream factory are a mere 15 minutes away…

Also nearby – how clever is Galloway as a visitor destination – the Cocoabean Company at Kirkcudbright has interactive children’s workshops and a chocolate shop (hurrah) alongside well-equipped and roomy indoor and outdoor play areas.

While in town, kick around the grounds of sixteenth century Maclellans Castle in the centre of Kirkcudbright, and have a look at Broughton House & Garden, former home of one of the Glasgow Boys EA Hormel and housing a huge collection of works by Robert Burns (painter, not poet Rabbie).

At Gatehouse of Fleet, about nine miles to the north-west from Kirkcudbright, the Mill on the Fleet art gallery holds regular exhibitions and events like literary launches and talks; follow up a morning here with an afternoon at fifteenth century Cardoness Castle or around the thousands of species blooming around at Cally Palace Gardens.

And a few more gems that must be seen on a Dumfries and Galloway holiday: a boat trip to huge Threave Castle on an island on the River Dee; a trip to the Gem Rock Museum at Creetown, filled with fossils, rocks, minerals and gemstones, and a stargazing trip to Galloway Forest Park, the first designated Dark Sky Park in the UK.
