  • Nearby access to Glasgow and Ayr by railway adjacent to the site
  • Indoor pool, sports activities, restaurant, games room and playground
The residents of Saltcoats, a historic harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, used to spend the night in 'salt cots', hence the place’s name. Luckily, these days there are better facilities for a sojourn close to the town’s handsome beach, such as Ayrshire's Sandylands Holiday Park. Guests can swim, splash and snorkel their way around the indoor pool or get stuck into some of the organised sports activities on site, and there are also kids’ clubs for children up to 11, featuring the usual Parkdean Resorts group characters of the Starland Krew. In the evenings, the Buccaneers Showbar runs theme nights, competitions and family shows, with live bands and cabarets regularly making an appearance to get toes tapping. For easy access to the surrounding area, a railway line runs adjacent to the holiday park – very nifty for visiting Glasgow, Ayr, Largs and beyond.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Easy access to town and ferry. Staff very friendly.

Disliked: Poor facilities for motorhome stop over. Fresh water fill up very hard to get at with no signage. Waste efluent disposal ,no signage. Showers were so hot that it was possibly hazardas. This site is not geared up for caravan, motorhome stop overs. The area designated is right next to a busy railway line and the road leeding to it was partially flooded.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Absolutely disgusting site we booked two nights and stayed one and we only stayed because we were shattered after travelling all day. Staff were rude and completely had no clue of where water fill up or whose was which hook up. There were numerous group booking all partying all night drinking loud music smoking cannabis. My husband escorted me to walk the dog and go to the toilet block due to how intimidating these groups were. A couple who arrived just before us and were pitching up felt just the same as us they also left the next morning after booking two nights. Probably the worst experience and site we have been on which is an ask considering we’ve had our Motorhome a few years now and have extensively travelled all I can say is don’t book and don’t go then hopefully they will look and change it!!

Disliked: Everything !!! we boycotted everything and left as soon as we could. It’s also right in the middle of an industrial site and the pitches back right on to the railway line

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: A very poorly set out of facilities for touring pitches. Lack of space between each pitch, poorly maintained electrical hook up posts some not working leading to cables stretching over paths between rows of pitches. Some touring caravans seem to be semi permanent based on the amount of additional kit around them (standard domestic fridges etc). Inconsiderate customers parking both vehicles and trailers blocking access. Toilet and shower facilities poorly maintained and cleaned with other customers inconsiderate by leaving used sanitary products in normal bins. Area around touring pitches full of litter and grass had not been cut in some time. No access to beach (without a 30 minutes walk) as bridge over railway tracks closed off. Give this one a miss…

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Night entertainment, children’s outside play area, swimming pool

Disliked: No hose pipe to fill your van, so bring one 😁 Tourer area is next to the rail track, but the trains travel slow & it stops at 11pm Beach is a fair walk, so we took the van Unable to book the pool, very hard to get in, as they have so many activities to buy for the pool

Local attractions

The landscapes in this part of Ayrshire are stunning, so it’s no surprise that some of the country’s most famed championship golf courses, including Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry, can be found in the area. As the birthplace of Robert Burns, Ayrshire is also rich in cultural attractions and museums relating to Scotland’s national poet. It’s easy to hop aboard the nearby ferry at Ardrossan for a day trip across the Firth of Clyde to Arran – the journey usually takes less than an hour and passengers regularly see dolphins during the crossing. Arran has miles of beautiful forest and coastal walks, more great golf courses, and attractions such as Brodick Castle and the Arran Heritage Museum to explore. The railway line that passes Sandylands Holiday Park also runs a limited service to the likes of Glasgow and Ayr, should visitors fancy exploring the area by train.
