Why visit Oban?

Out and about around Oban Bay

When you think of bucket and spade days, the Scottish Highlands might not immediately spring to mind. But visits to Oban are all about the beach – its Gaelic name, An t-Òban, means little bay, so you can expect plenty of opportunities to roam over sand and surf in this pretty part of Argyll

For swimming and sandcastles, there’s Ganavan beach (10 minutes’ drive), while other water-based activities like kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and diving can be found in town or just down the road at Puffin Dive Centre (10 minutes).

Interested in nature? A range of local boats offer tours out to seal colonies – just walk up and down the harbourfront until you’ve found one that matches what you’re looking for.

Hop over to the Hebrides

In fair weather, Oban has sweeping views over Inner Hebridean islands like Kerrera and Mull. The town is also a hub for the iconic Caledonian MacBrayne ferries that connect up Scotland’s far-flung offshore settlements with the mainland.

Lismore is famed for its wildflowers, while Mull is known for its magnificent birds of prey. Visits to Iona’s ancient abbey and Staffa’s unmistakable hexagonal columns are also on the cards.

Foot passenger tickets (which include a bicycle) can be surprisingly cheap, and special island-hopping tickets are available, making it a breeze to design your own itinerary.

Argyll’s amazing castles

Basing yourself in Oban also puts many of Argyll’s most spectacular castles within your reach.

Half an hour’s drive to the north, you can gaze out over Castle Stalker, a four-storey tower on a tidal island in Loch Laich, while back on dry land you can visit the dog-friendly ruins at Dunstaffnage (10 minutes).

It takes a little longer to get there, but the 18th-century planned town of Inveraray (an hour) is also well worth a visit, as is its castle, the iconic ancestral home of the Clan Campbell.

Delve deeper

McCaig’s Tower

Wandering through the streets of Oban, you might wonder what a large round building that looks like a Roman amphitheatre is doing in the Highlands.

McCaig’s Tower is actually an unfinished folly, built by an eccentric banker from the nearby isle of Lismore. No one is quite sure how he wanted the finished product to look, but one thing’s for sure – the views from up here are exceptional.

Oban’s best walks

Whether you’re after Munros to bag, guided tours of the harbour or forest strolls in nearby Taynuilt or Glasdrum Wood National Nature Reserve, Oban is an excellent spot for walkers.

Not sure if you’ve got the right kit? Oban town centre has a number of big brand outdoor equipment shops where you can stock up on boots, poles, bags and accessories.

Gorgeous gardens

Although it’s as far north as Newfoundland, Argyll and Bute is, like much of Scotland’s west coast, a good deal milder thanks to warm breezes blown over by the Gulf Stream. This climate, together with a lot of precipitation, allows a huge array of native and exotic plant life to flourish.

There are lots of spectacular gardens on both the islands and mainland around Oban. For more information, visit Glorious Gardens of Argyll’s official website
