Campsites in Co. Mayo

3 bookable campsites in Co. Mayo Sorted by our favourites

Might you like to go camping in Co Mayo? We think you should. That the Connacht county is utterly beaut is a given – it’s on Ireland’s west coast, after all, with Atlantic Ocean views out to Achill Island and from Croaghaun, the highest sea cliffs in Ireland and Britain (put both of those on your to-visit list too).

But aside from the scenery (it might take you some time to overlook the scenery), many canny people who book Mayo campsites come here to fish for wild Atlantic salmon on the River Moy, one of the top salmon fishing rivers in Europe. The River Cong also has abundant salmon – and trout – yields, but we’ll steer you here mainly because it’s Quiet Man Country: the John Wayne film was shot here and the Quiet Man Cottage Museum by the river draws countless connoisseurs every year.

Into more urban activities? Castlebar, Ballina and Westport are Mayo’s biggest towns: go to Castlebar for the only branch of the National Museum of Ireland outside Dublin, Ballina for the July salmon festival and to Westport for festivals, sea fishing on Clew Bay and the Pirate Adventure Park at Westport House.
