General

  • Traditional farm in the Irish countryside
  • Meet the farm animals or order an evening meal
  • Thirty minutes by train from Galway - train station a short walk away

A farm stay among the green green hills of Co Galway – we'll sign up for some of that.

Green Hills Farm Stay is a traditional family farm in the Irish countryside near the town of Ballinasloe – and as it's in Co Galway, smashing scenery among fresh air is a given. And we're fairly confident in saying that owners Pat and Eveline are among the friendliest hosts you'll find anywhere: pitch up here for help with your pitch, your campfire, your food (and tea) supplies and your necessary info on the area, its pubs and its fairy field with ancient fort...

Your hosts will also be happy to take you around the farm to meet the cows, horses, sheep, pigs, hens, geese, ducks, sheepdogs and setter, and to show you how a traditional Irish farm works: you can even join in with some if you want. They'll also sort an evening meal for you if required; just request it on arrival.

The village local to Green Hills is Kilconnell which has a couple of shops and three traditional pubs. The farm is about 10km from Ballinasloe and about 30 minutes by train from Galway; the local station, Woodlawn, has regular Dublin—Galway trains and is within easy walking distance.

Basic camping, no crowded pitches almost wild camping. Shared the pitch with sheep geese and friendly Donkey. Pat (owner farmer) gives the warmest of welcomes and is truly helpful to all his guests. Evening tour given by our host Pat made the stay unique, fascinating journey into the world of fairys, folklore and ancient Irish history.
Unforgettable nights stay at Pats farm. A true hidden joy for those wishing to experience the real Ireland.

It was actually me and my mum camping here as part of our whistle stop tour of Ireland. By the time we reached Green Hills we had already spent three nights in three different, conventional camp sites. We had been miserable every night until we reached this haven. We arrived in the pouring rain and Pat didn't hesitate to ask us inside for a cup of tea (or two) and some jammy toast - the most warming of welcomes. We then spent our time waiting for the rain to ease and chatting about our lives, his life, and the fairies - with cameos from his delightful daughters! After eventually pitching our tent we were led by our obliging host on a tour of his amazing farm to see the fairies fort and the other amazing sights. We love it here so much, we're staying another night - couldn't recommend it more! Waking up to sheep, sun and serenity just can't be beaten!

From the minute we arrived we enjoyed our stay. The family were so friendly. They couldn't do enough for us. We had farm tour , trip to the bog to see where the peat came from . Took the train to Galway city from Woodlawn train station what a treat. The children loved it. We all had a great time.

    Loved the setting.

    Disliked:

Not as much isolation as I'd hoped for. The farmer was friendly and knowledgeable, but I found his long, frequent visits to our tent too intrusive.

Additionally, he says he does healing. Without asking my permission he rearranged my trousers and my underwear so that he could better place his hands on my lower back. My daughter was horrified. We left early.

Directions

From Galway:
Take the M6 then R348 to Kilconnell and once you reach the village take the first left. Travelling along that road take the second left, then the first left after that: we are the first house on the left.

From Ballinasloe:
Take the R348 and when you come to Kilconnell Village take the second right at the end of the village. Travelling along that road take the second left, then the first left after that: we are the first house on the left.

Local attractions

We suggest you don't go to Ballinasloe without sampling several scones in some of its cafés: make it your crumbly mission to track down the Very Best of All. The town also has a swimming pool, library, big supermarkets and several shops, and is home to the Ballinasloe Fair and festival every October, one of the oldest horse fairs in Europe.

Visit fifteenth century Kilconnell Abbey nearby or cast off at Callow Lakes for wild brown trout; above the lakes, the Lough Callow Loop is a six and a half kilometre walk and mountain bike trail along country lanes and bog tracks.

Also have a look at the village of Aughrim where the Battle of Aughrim was fought in 1691 and where there's now a museum and interpreter centre and more trout fishing in the village river. And finally, have at least a day in Galway, to hang around its quay and have fresh mussels and a foamy Guinness in Eyre Square.
