Eco Camping Glamping: Organic eggs from the site hens

General

  • Eco-friendly site in Miltown Malbay, a hub of traditional music
  • A five-minute drive from Spanish Point and the Wild Atlantic Way
  • Fresh produce for sale on site from the organic smallholding

Ireland's known as the Emerald Isle, but this County Clare site is green in more ways than one…

Eco Camping Glamping is a peaceful park three kilometres from seaside strolls along the wild west coast. Head to this off-grid, eco-conscious site to wake up to views of green fields, native trees and wildflower meadows. All the power here is supplied by renewable sources, including the handy charging points where you can juice up your gadgets. There's also an organic smallholding on site, meaning that the folk that run this place are well-placed to supply you with healthy goodies like free-range eggs and fresh salad.

The surrounding landscape is pleasant and gentle indeed, but more dramatic views are just around the corner. Head to the coast (five minutes’ drive) to join the Wild Atlantic Way – highlights along this well-trodden trail include the Cliffs of Moher, Spanish Point and the lush Loop Head Peninsula.

Eco Camping Glamping is close to Miltown Malbay – so close, in fact, that this town's food shops, bars and pubs can all be reached within a five-minute walk. This place is known as 'the home of traditional Irish music', so a toe-tapping pint or two at a local live music night should certainly be on the cards during your stay.

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Minimum spacing of 20 metres between pitches.

We liked everything. We're just back from a super 4 day stay over the June Bank Holiday weekend. Although there was a full house, it was still super peaceful in this nature reserve eco camping spot. If it's fancy all mod cons you are looking for, this isn't the place, but everything we needed was here. This is a place to get away from it all.
The toilet was always spotless, there was a charging station for phones etc powered by solar energy in this off grid site. The pitches were separated from each other, meaning that despite being full, there was lots of privacy. The place felt so safe, our kids were happy wandering around, and looking at the hens.
The location is super, near enough to town for shops, playground etc, but without the sound of traffic. A short 3km or less cycle on quiet roads to two beautiful beaches.
Micheál was always very friendly and helpful, giving us tips for cycling routes, and better ways to go in the camper. He also rented out beautiful fire-pits with fuel for anyone wanting to sit out late in the cooling evening (must do this next time!).
Its great to see how much can be done while respecting mother nature - more sites like this would be great. We'll definitely be back.

    not very presentable
Place was flooded when we arrived
It looked like dirty mattress standing inside tent
    Bed felt damp
2 seater couch outside tent looked awful 😕
Grass was ridiculous looking, looked like its never touched
The man that ran the place was friendly but that was the only thing that was nice about the place

From the manager...

Noeleen. You spent 5 minutes here and i tried to explain to you that we had very bad weather the previous two days. In fact this summer has been the wettest i can remember and i have worked out of doors for the past 20 years each summer. As such we are adapting to make the campsite an all weather campsite and you will have seen the ground work we are doing to get the campsite prepared for the changing climate. The bell tent had to be taken down due to an unusually strong wind and heavy rain from the north west that week but it was not damp as i had dried it out. It is a nature reserve so the grass is grown in certain areas to keep people away from those areas. The grass around the tent was mowed, using a solar powered strimmer, that morning. I told you you would not be charged as you did not want to stay but you still had to have your opinion to share with the world. It is one of the sad facts wit the social media age that 'everyone wants to be heard'. Sometimes as the old saying goes 'if you do not have anything positive to say why not say anything at all'.

You did not give the place time to really see what the developing project is all about and what is planned. You ust wanted to have an opinion. Your negative 'feelings' can have a damaging effect to our business but to tell you the truth people with narrow minds like you are not the type of guests we are looking for to experience our eco campsite. My experience of meeting you Noeleen was not a very positive one. After i explained everything in a text to you afterwards you lied to me and that is why i do not want to see you again

Thank you Monica. It was a pleasure having you and your family here and hopefully we can welcome you back to this part of West Clare again. Yes, what we are trying to offer here is a Wild Camping experience (with a few comforts like solar electric charging facility for phones and batteries, toilets, shower, eco products for sale like bamboo toothbrushes, coconut fibre scrub pads, etc.) We want people to experience nature while they stay here and wake each morning to the dawn chorus. We see time spent in nature as therapeutic. Thank you and best wishes. GRMA. Mícheál

Minimal facilities for showering (1 shower and hot water only available between 4-7pm) and kitchen (1 outdoor sink, no fridge). Water drainage was an issue in rainy weather.

From the manager...

Barry, I am very disappointed with your review as you seemed to understand what we are doing here after giving you a tour of the solar charging facilities. I did text you say that the weather a lot of rain was forecast before you traveled and suggested that you might prefer camping in nicer weather with children but you decided to travel anyway.

Firstly, i want to address an important point regarding reviews so that hopefully other people in future can be more reasonable. The accommodation is normally 'your tent' when you stay here so why would one leave a negative review about their own tent !? This has appeared in any negative reviews we have so far and i hope pitchup.com will address this fact that people are reviewing their own tents negatively which is a little confusing.

Now Barry. i explained to your friends wife (who seemed like she had a degree in camping or something) we do not have a kitchen and will not have a kitchen here due to COVID19. Most people bring their own cooking stoves.I also told her that you could use the solar powered chest freezer for storing ice packs to transfer as needed to your cool box each day (a system that works very well and is more eco than plugging in a cool box) and also that we had two sinks (one beside the shower and flush toilet for hand and face washing) and another sink which we call the kitchen sink where you prepare your food and wash dishes. There is also a compost bucket there for food waste under the kitchen sink that the chickens recycle. Warm water for a shower is available between 4 and 7pm but because you let your children run all over our newly prepared earthen mounds and get so dirty i prepared hot water for you at 9pm for you to wash your kids. My son who is 11 was looking in disbelief when he saw your children throwing lumps of earth and stones around the place from our newly prepared mounds which are to be planted with lots of basket willow for wind breaks between pitches during the spring time. I asked you to stop your children from damaging our mounds and looked back 30 mins later to see they were still creating a mess. When you and your friend came to say goodbye the next day you said you were hoping to come back and see how the project develops at a future date. After leaving your negative review stating that you would not visit again we would prefer if you don't visit again as there is too much confusion within your group

Local attractions

This stretch of the Clare coast really does hit the ball out of the proverbial park. As it's the closest beach, you'll most likely want to kick things off at Spanish Point (five minutes' drive), a peaceful stretch of sand named after Armada ships that were shipwrecked nearby in 1588. There's also a beachfront golf club here (also five minutes), a nifty nine-holer with ace sea views.

Onwards next to further-flung spots like White Strand beach (25 minutes), the Loop Head Peninsula (30 minutes) and the Cliffs of Moher (30 minutes), each and every one of which is full of natural loveliness. The latter spot is particularly impressive and one of the most visited locales in all of Ireland – with eight kilometres of dramatic coastal vistas, 20 species of nesting birds and UNESCO Global Geopark status, there's certainly a lot to reel fresh air-loving travellers in.

There are a good few critters to be seen around site, but any tiddlers in your crew can be rewarded for/cajoled into behaving well with a trip to Willie Daly's Donkey Farm (20 minutes); Aillwee Caves (50 minutes) is also highly likely to capture kids' imaginations.
