  • Peaceful site with fishing lake and rod hire available
  • Easily accessible, half a mile from the A431 between Bath and Bristol
  • Village shop and pub within walking distance
Bath or Bristol? Have easy access to both at Boyd Valley Lake, set down a quiet country lane half a mile from the A431 between both cities. This is a nifty base for city and countryside days: it’s just under eight miles from here to both Bristol and Bath, and the site’s Greater Bristol setting is in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for gentle strolls and nature spotting. For day trips, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester are all within an hour’s drive and mighty Stonehenge within an hour and 10 minutes. In between all that, retreat for peaceful days on site at the one and three quarter-acre fishing lake suitable for all abilities of angler; hire a rod from the Boyd Valley Lake team to try your luck landing carp, bream, barbel and many more slippery species. There’s plenty of space around these green grounds for wanders – and picnics – too. The village shop and local pub are within walking distance, and two garden centres and coffee shops are within a mile.

Not a campsite. It’s a sloped corner of a muddy field.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: Pretty much everything. Pulled into the site, then drove away and booked elsewhere. It’s not really a campsite. Its a muddy corner of a sloped field with a few caravans that look abandoned and other than a fishing lake zero facilities. Presumably this place appeals to the fishing crowd but it’s certainly not for me. Even £15 felt like a rip off.

Liked: Nice fishing lake

Disliked: Toilets and showered were very dirty ,poor lighting leading to toilets and no pathway ,and due to heavy rains the site was saturated and very muddy ,so muddy we could not use a pitch and played it safe and parked the caravan in the carparking area for the night.

Liked: Wildlife and friendly stables staff next door who let our little ones say hello to the ponies. For the price it’s good but I wouldn’t come back with little ones and definitely not in the rain as the place turns into a quagmire.

Disliked: Generators running for most of the night, strange man on the phone doing laps of the camp site arguing about his Mrs. Had to climb over a mound of mud to get to shower block, pictures attached, not a huge deal but doing it in the night with little ones who need a wee isn’t ideal. No one there to show you where to camp or park up, we just grabbed a spot. Feels like more of a working farm that rents out motor homes to their staff than a peaceful camp spot, shipping containers and IBC containers lined the site. If you don’t have a 4x4 with decent tires be careful where you park as the place is quite muddy in the rain.

Liked: My friend and I came for a night’s stay in our camper vans to have some chill time. There are 3 fields but due to all the wet weather we have had we opted to stay in the carpark. It was extremely peaceful and safe. Peter was so nice he popped along to say hello and see if we were ok and he came by again in the morning. There are separate male and female shower and toilet facilities. I would definitely come back, I bet it’s even better in the sunshine.

Liked: The guy on the phone was a bit helpful

Disliked: There is no reception to greet you. You will have to find your own way, park wherever you want. The facilities were difficult to find, i had to call the guy to ask where they were located. I want to preface this by saying we stayed on a rainy night (Rain wasn’t heavy just drizzling the whole night). The way to the toilet was ankle deep mud. There was no way to get there without wellies. Ruined our shoes trying to get there the first time so we resorted to wearing bin bags on our shoes and pissing in bottles! I would not recommend this place to anyone

From the manager: Good Afternoon Mrs Hale, Thank you for taking the time to review us. We are very disappointed to hear that your stay was not as enjoyable as we would have hoped! However, we just wanted to add a little context to your concerns. Arrival time onsite was 21:30pm, as you will see on Pitchup, arrival time is from 14:00 until 21:00. Despite this you were directed to a suitable camping spot for the evening (via telephone) and in a subsequent call directed to the toilet block. Unfortunately; as we are sure you are aware, Bristol and much of the south west is in flood conditions, with significant rain fall overnight on the 17th. For future winter camping trips we would strongly encourage Wellington Boots. We wish you well with the rest of your trip. BVL Management Team

Liked: Very basic but enjoyable stay! Only stayed one night .. but found easily.. well sign posted. No reception area .. but very kind customer directed us on where to park and pitch up. Toilets etc very basic … so be ready for a very rural visit!! Lakes and country side is beautiful… x

Disliked: Tried to call both telephone numbers on the booking confirmation to find out where to pitch up but both numbers didn’t work. Better communication once on site would be helpful.

Local attractions

Want to stay close to base on days you’re not out sightseeing in Bristol or Bath? Steam along to the Avon Valley Railway a mile and a half from the site for a vintage train ride on its three-mile run through peaceful countryside (check opening times before setting out as the railway is generally only open on weekends and during school holidays). If you’d prefer to get about under your own steam, it’s a mile from Boyd Valley Lake to the Bristol to Bath cycle track, the 13-mile traffic free route between both cities. Opt to walk or cycle the path (access is provided for wheelchairs too), stopping off along the way to spot sculptures and old steam engines: the track is also an art trail and passes the steam engines at Bitton station. Options further afield include Cheddar Gorge, Wells and Wookey Hole, all 50 minutes’ drive away, and the National Trust-managed Dyrham Park (15 minutes), Prior Park Landscape Garden (25 minutes), Lacock Abbey (35 minutes) and Tyntesfield Victorian house (40 minutes).
