Lovely secluded site next to farm with goats and horses etc. Far reaching views - would be lovely in the summer. Excellent toilet/shower facilities. Cosy shepherd huts including a wood burner - very well equipped. Tents have the added facility of a larger safari tent for cooking and again, both had wood burners too. Yes, we loved it especially the hot tub!

In summary, our stay did not quite meet our expectations.20/07/2023

The horses were so friendly and lovely to watch playing about in front of our hut. The hut was cosy and the wood burner worked well so set a lovely scene in the evening. The pick up of key was simple and directions were useful. The hot water in the shower worked well. The location was accessible and felt very tranquil.

    Disliked:

The check in for 4pm was rather late in the day, and check out being 10am meant the hours use of the hut was quite minimal, barely felt like we had any time there at all for the price that was paid which we feel wasn't the cheapest accommodation we have used before. In addition, we were zipping up our luggage at 10:05am and just about to walk out the hut door and were met by the host who was waiting outside the hut for us to leave. We felt quite rushed, and think that at least 15 minutes leeway would have been reasonable to allow us to check out and do a proper recce of the hut before departure. A hard and fast 10am on the dot seems a little unflexible, especially as we felt as though we didn't get full usage for the hut for our stay for the price paid. Because we felt rushed on departure, we didn't have time to check the hut properly and had to go back to get stuff from the fridge, which probably wouldn't have been the case had we been given a grace period of more than 5 mins to leave.

Overall our stay was pleasant, but for the time and facilities offered and hospitality level offered by the host, sadly do not feel that the price matched our expectations.

From the manager...

Hi Alice,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that you felt that you were rushed to leave, that was not the intention. I was there just dropping of the cleaning kit and just happened to stop and start speaking to a guest who had an enquiry, so apologies again that you felt rushed.

We do give our guests a 15 minute leeway to leave the accommodation so they can gather their belonging and do a final check to make sure they didn't leave anything behind.

I did ask whether everything was ok and you said that everything was lovely, so I assumed everything was ok. If I had known that you were not happy with aspects of the service I could have addressed your concerns at the time.

We are reviewing our post Covid protocols for site cleaning and maintenance and we expect that from next year we will be able to operate with a check in time of 2pm.

We would be delighted to welcome you back for another stay.

Amazing place! We stayed in one of the Bell tents (Anabel) the tent itself is spacious and the beds are comfy. So comfy that my children that never really sleep in slept till 8 am! Which is unheard of. There is nothing that we did not like in this place and would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful stay.

The site was really pretty with good views and there are lots of cute farm animals. Out of the way enough to feel like a peaceful countryside stay, but there are lots of walks and pubs in the immediate area, and its easy enough to walk or drive to a nearby town. The facilities are great, all the necessary cooking/cleaning supplies and nice clean showers and loos. Communication with the site was easy and the price very reasonable for a place so clearly carefully managed. We stayed with 4 people in a bell tent which was roomy and luxurious.

Local attractions

Highway Hill is on the doorstep of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, home to one of the largest tracts of chalk downland in southern England. You won't be short of country walks here, whether the goal is to reach the village pub in Hilmarton (two miles away) or you already see yourself bounding over the hills around the Cherhill White Horse (15 minutes' drive).

For further outdoor activities, you're half an hour from Cotswold Water Park, a huge system of lakes where there's scope for waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing, paddleboarding or letting off steam on a floating inflatable obstacle course. For indoor exercise, meanwhile, there are well-equipped public leisure centres in Calne (10 minutes) and Chippenham (20 minutes).

Other local attractions of note include architectural highlights like Avebury Manor and Gardens (20 minutes) and the UNESCO-listed centre of Bath (40 minutes). Wiltshire's also a hotspot for prehistoric heritage, including iconic Stonehenge (50 minutes) and the lesser-known standing stones at Avebury (20 minutes). Finally, if you're looking for something for the kids, you could try nearby family-friendly options like the Swindon Steam Museum (25 minutes), Longleat Safari Park (an hour) or Cotswold Wildlife Park (50 minutes).
