General

  • Back to basics farm site near Wells
  • Pitch where you like
  • Water supply and toilets on site

Let your troubles ebb away at Ebborways Farm near Wells, in the scenic heart of Somerset. Perfect for those in pursuit of an authentic camping experience, simplicity is the key here: it’s just you, a field – and a campfire if you like – in sumptuous, serene surroundings. Facilities are limited to a water supply and composting loos, and you can pitch wherever you like, alone or in groups.

However, you’re not too far from a bit of civilisation: it’s a short walk to a handful of pubs - including a couple that do top-notch food - and a farm shop, in the local village of Priddy (and it is, too).

Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs), as well as nets of logs, are available to buy on arrival.

Please note

Campfires are allowed on site. Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs) cost £8 and nets of logs £5.

The use of generators is not allowed.

Loved that you just drive in and pitch up wherever you like. Touring at its simplest. Views from the site are beautiful and the local pub is just a short stroll away. Composting toilets are as clean as you can get, and not all that bad! People are friendly and its a site where you can really connect with the world around you, minus the fuss of a commercialised, busy caravan park.

Location very near Priddy and only a short drive to Cheddar Gorge.

    Disliked:

Long grass. No sign to say if water from tap was drinkable. Floors and surfaces of loos could be checked and cleaned more frequently- poop trodden into floor there from our afternoon arrival until time we left next morning.

The space and freedom, we could pitch up wherever we liked. We also loved being able to have a fire at the site. The composting toilets were very interesting!

    Disliked:

We could have done with some stones or something to surround our fire. There was only one concrete block we could use and it would have been safer to have a few songs to use.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, Very glad you enjoyed your stay. Also we had ordered some metal fire pits, so took most of the stones away when the field was mowed, but unfortunately the delivery has been delayed. Apologies for the inconvenience.

The big hole in the ground with the toilet cubicles placed over the top and the bucket of wood shavings to cover up your business,it took me back to my younger days at scout camp, but it was the look of horror on my stepdaughters face when she saw that kind of toilet for the first time in her life,1 word (PRICELESS) 😂😂

    Disliked:

Not much to dislike,it to me was a cheap and cheerful campsite and you get what you pay for,the toilets was ok for me but wouldn't be for some.

A basic field set up with pitch where you want. Has water points and composting toilet ( not used so cannot say what they were like). A very basic site and as such a very basic price. The couple who run/own it are lovely and really helpful. Open fires allowed and recycling bins available. I loved that you could not leave your standard rubbish and you were encouraged t take it all away with you. lovely views and very quiet. The field is edged by trees and is slopped but there are level areas. There was a local pub a five minute walk away which served food but again we did not use it

    Disliked:

I didn't mind this but some might so I will point it out. There is what looks like a family living in one corner of the field - a little like a new age hippy style. They were no trouble but some people may find this a little different to a standard site. Again I did not mind this but there are no rubbish bins you are encouraged to take it away or if you wanted to burn it on your open fire

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to send a review. I feel I must clarify though, this is not a residential site, so there is nobody living here, However people can stay for a few weeks and do get very settled in.
Up until recently we required guests to take all of there rubbish home, but are now able to recycle glass bottles and cans. This is real camping, and I hope that if camping in a wood somewhere people would not leave your rubbish.

Directions

From the North/ Midlands:
Take the M5 then M4 to London and take first junction M32 Bristol.
At the end of the M32 follow the road around to the left.
Follow signs for A37 Wells (mostly written in the road). Basically the middle lane, past Temple Meads Station.
Continue to follow the signs for Wells through Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney and Chewton Mendip.
At Green Ore (traffic lights with pub on right), continue straight on.
Approx ¼ mile turn right, signed for Priddy. (If you find yourself going downhill, you have gone too far)
Continue for three miles into the village, take the first left past The Queen Victoria pub.
We are 400 yards up on the right. There are 2 very large beech trees just before our drive.

Please call at the house on arrival.

Local attractions

Given the proximity of Bath and Wells, there’s an obvious temptation to regale your companions with choice one-liners from Blackadder; but pause for breath and you’ll discover that both have more celebrated charms than the baby-eating bishop.

Bath probably needs less of an introduction: think Roman baths, Georgian grandeur, Jane Austen, rugby and culture aplenty; while Wells, which holds the accolade of England’s smallest city, is a medieval gem with a thirteenth century cathedral, a moated bishop’s palace, and a lively twice-weekly market.

Also highly recommended is a trip to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, which offers something for all ages: breathtaking views; brilliant caving and rock climbing; walks up Jacob’s Ladder; open-top bus tours; a clutch of family attractions; eerily beautiful stalactite caverns; and, of course, more cheese than you can shake a stick at.

Keen walkers will be delighted by the proximity of the Mendips (Ebborways Farm is close to the West Mendip Way, which runs to the Ebbor Gorge nature reserve); or, for those who prefer life on four wheels, there are loads of fascinating places an easy drive away: atmospheric Glastonbury, the colossal caves and family attractions at Wookey Hole, the vibrant maritime city of Bristol, the fantastic safari and adventure park at Longleat, and the sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare.

If you’re visiting in August, you may be lucky enough to coincide with Priddy’s annual sheep fair; this historic event, with animal demonstrations, a funfair and more, attracts a whopping 10,000 visitors each year.

Finally, should you feel the need to indulge in our national pastime, there are more than 90 outlet shops at the Clarks Village centre, in the nearby village of Street.
