General

  • Set among apple orchards with scrumpy cider available to buy on site
  • Easy access to Taunton by road or along the canal by foot or bike
  • Wild peacocks, ducks, geese, guinea fowls and chickens

A Somerset site with 'cider farm' in the name: how fizzing fantastic. And the means to buy scrumpy on site from two spacious apple orchards: how fizzing fantastic too.

Lashings of Henry's Farmhouse Scrumpy can be obtained at Tanpits Cider Farm Caravan and Camping Park – perhaps on arrival, to have on your very first day while firing up the barbecue for a post-sunset supper under the Somerset stars…?

Free range eggs are also available to buy for sizzling up for breakfast, a meal that might see you joined by the feathered and furred residents of this friendly and peaceful little farm site: wild peacocks, ducks, geese, guinea fowls and chickens all wander here, and you should see squirrels scampering about too.

The farm is right next to the historic Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, about 40 minutes' walk or 15 minutes by bike via the handsomely scenic towpath to the old town of Taunton. Happily tasty pub food and ales are about six minutes' stroll from base at the Merry Monk, and a retail centre with shops (and cinema) is within easy walking distance.

The farm facilities include hot showers, toilets, a launderette and a washing-up area. A play area is to hand for kids – possibly best to distract them while the grownups sort out a hefty purchase of Somerset farm scrumpy.

Lovely site , bit of road noise but not to bad, lot of wild life on site including peacocks which can be a bit noisy but can live with that.
Good base for touring and site seeing.

    Disliked:

Nothing really, except a little bit of road noise and disabled facilities a little basic ie no wet room or shower.

Lovely site, very clean, well kept, plenty of space

    Disliked:

not a very good welcome after 6 hours of travelling put dogs on lead to find a pitch and disturbed rabbits dogs pulled on lead and as I am in my seventies had to let go it was only for a second when we gained control there was nobody about as the site was very quite only the owner who was cutting the grass and to say he was very unpleasant to say the least I did apologise and he accused me of letting the dogs off the lead to run around( which was not the case) in a not very nice way. On arrival the lady of the site greeted me with Name?, amount owed, cash only I explained that we didn't have the cash but would get it from the ATM when settled in
she was not very pleased, after about 2 hrs we had something to eat in the caravan and was just relaxing when the owner came to ask for the balance of our stay we did not have time to go to get the ATM so I gave him the only cash I had which was £10 leaving with a balance of £28.25 and told them that we would give them this the following morning which we did.
We have been touring for over 40 years and have never felt so uncomfortable on arrival before we were only there for 3 days on our way to Cornwall and plans were to call on way back for another 3 days but after that greeting went somewhere else

From the manager...

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay. We have to enforce dogs on leads due to all our peacocks, guinea fowl etc that roam free we have already had several incidents of dogs attacking and killing them. My husband only had words as you seemed to be making no effort to regain control of your dogs.

I'm confused as to why you said I wasn't pleased, we allowed you to go on and pitch up and get settled in, with the promise of you paying later that day. You were on site til gone 6pm and had made no effort to go and get cash out, even though there is a ATM 5 mins walk up the road. So my husband had to chase you up so we could do the banking up.

We would also like to say thanks for making no effort to clear up after your dogs.

We were in the orchard which was lovely, peacocks, guinea foul and rabbits were all around us and although we were near a massive new housing development you would never know once on the farm, the scrumpy is delicious! Toilets in orchard were basic but immaculately clean. The owner was very helpful and the weather was awful, no issue if we got stuck (which we didn’t) he would tow us off if needed.

    Disliked:

Shower block was very cold due to people being inconsiderate and leaving the door open!

Local attractions

The shops and restaurants of historic town Taunton are a short drive from Tanpits Cider Farm Caravan and Camping Park, also easily reachable via bike or feet via the towpath of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. Have a wander in town around Vivary Park, once a medieval fish farm and now a place of tennis courts, miniature golf, playgrounds, model railway track and two playgrounds.

Taunton's also famed for its flowers (the Taunton Flower Show's nickname is 'the Chelsea of the west'); if this suits your green-fingered tastes, Vivary Park also has over 55,000 spring and summer plants, and a rose garden that includes the Royal National Rose Society's Provincial Trial Ground.

Other nearby places of interest and activity are the West Somerset Railway near Bishops Lydeard seven miles away, Clarks Village (20 miles) and Minehead, within 30 miles. The walks and mountain bike rides of the Quantock Hills are also a popular pick.

Must see
