General

  • Next to a family-oriented pub in Lydford-on-Fosse
  • Convenient for visiting Glastonbury, Bath and the Wookey Hole Caves
  • Pub serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and hosting live music

A pub – with beer garden – in Somerset: how smashing. And even more splendid, The Cross Keys Inn is about 10 miles from Glastonbury if you're in the south-west to see the Tor or get muddied up at the fest, and is niftily set for other top highlights like Bath, Wells and the Wookey Hole Caves, all under 10 miles away.

The pub is in the Somerset village of Lydford-on-Fosse, between Yeovil and Glastonbury. It has two bars, an open fire and wifi, and serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as real ales. Live music events are occasionally hosted in the beer garden.

Facilities in the camping field include drinking water, a chemical disposal point, a recycling area, toilets and showers.
When you're off to explore the many tiptop highlights of Somerset and the south-west, the A303 is a quick three-minute drive away.

This is a good little campsite close to the A303 so ideal for stopping over on the way to/from the West Country.

It's a great little authentic country pub with friendly staff, a good selection of local beers and ciders and excellent food.

We've stayed here numerous times over the last 4/5 years which should be enough of a recommendation.

    Disliked:

The toilet/shower block needs sprucing up a bit - It's clean and the showers work well, but the decor needs a bit of work.

This is a very good site in a nice setting. I stayed for two nights when attending the Air Day at the nearby RNAS Yeovilton. Pitches are flat, level and well drained and a very good size: I could have fitted my small car and two-man tent onto the pitch twice. The toilet and shower block was clean and well-maintained, and the showers very good: powerful and hot. The pub is nice, serving local beers and ciders (which I did, of course, sample). There was a band playing on the second night of my stay, but the camping field is far enough from the pub that the noise wasn't intrusive. The warden was pleasant and friendly, as were the bar staff. I will definitely return if I'm in the area again.

Campsite itself was ok-fairly flat and close to the amenities. The staff were all pleasant and friendly. The food was a little on the expensive side, but absolutely delicious and well presented. There was also a good variety of ales and ciders on offer.

    Disliked:

Booking information being passed to their warden was confusing and-in our case-incorrect.We had booked 2 pitches next to each other-there was only 1 available on either side of the field.Given the fact that it was a bank holiday,we were prepared to forego the fact that there would be a delay on the refuse collection-however-this did not include the cleaning of the toilets-or the emptying of the bins, and the cleaning of the toilets and showers. It was well after 11-30 on the bank holiday monday, before the warden even ventured out of her on-site caravan. It was tuesday before the toilets and rubbish had been properly dealt with.Very off-putting- especially when a neighbour across the land alongside the site, decided to light a bonfire in his garden and fill every ones caravan/tent with acrid smoke.

Local attractions

It's under 10 miles to some excellent and famed Somerset destinations, including Glastonbury Tor and Abbey (six miles), the teeny city of Wells (eight miles) and the fably spooky Wookey Hole Caves (nine miles).

You'll also be a speedy five miles from the huge collection of military and civilian craft at Ilchester's Fleet Air Arm Museum, which houses the biggest naval aviation collection of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft in Europe, and nine from the 400 or so cars and motorbikes at Sparkford's Haynes International Motor Museum. This latter takes family fun most seriously, and lays on a range of activities for the under-fours, ages four to 12, and teens.

The Royal Bath and West Showground is seven miles away at Shepton Mallet: head here for events and shows, flea markets, and the famed Royal Bath & West Show, highlighting the best of British farming, culture and produce. Toddle along to it if you're around in late May/early June, to see the British Cider Championships and the British Cheese Awards, and sample as much produce as poss from 125 food producers.

And then there's Bath, the famed and handsome city that's one of only three in Britain to have UNESCO World Heritage status (Liverpool and Edinburgh are the others, but of course you knew that…). Drive the 20 or so miles to here for sights such as The Roman Baths complex, Bath Abbey and the Jane Austen Centre.

Must see
