  • Family-run site in Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Sea views; a 15-minute drive to the edge of Exmoor National Park
  • Swimming pool, tennis and boules on site
Views, glorious views… the area surrounding award-winning St Audries Bay Holiday Club near Minehead is the setting for splendid Somerset sights. The park is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the foot of the Quantock Hills, it's a short drive from beaches on the Somerset coast and has views across the Bristol Channel to Wales: bring your camera. That setting is a most handy one for getting out and about too: hikers can head up into the Quantock Hills or expand their horizons to the nearby Exmoor National Park. Both Bridgwater and Taunton are on the M5 15 miles away, and you can hit the sands of Minehead with a drive of about 25 minutes. St Audries Bay has been family-owned and run since 1933 and has picked up a goodly handful of awards along the way, so it’s safe to assume they know what to lay on for guests of all ages whatever the weather: among the options on offer are tennis, boules, fishing, an adventure playground and a swimming pool. There's also a bar which serves drinks only, which is only open on Friday and Saturday.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: This was a lovely little site only stayed 1 night facilities good clean modern shower and toilet block only downside was the beach access was closed for safety reasons and as this was the selling point of us booking here a bit disappointed and only reason for 4 stars

Disliked: No access to beach

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we are also sad that we have had to temporarily close our beach steps, the weather has been relentless, we are working to get them open ASAP😊

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: A really well presented campsite. There's both touring (of which we stayed) and static holiday homes. All the amenities you'll need. Swimming pool, bar, games room, outdoor park. Staff, were very approachable, friendly and helpful. The beach is a cliff walk away, and it's private and quiet. Mega for families and dogos. A glorious waterfall, awaits you at the west end of the beach. Toilet block - modern and very clean. Touring pitches - tiered pitches with plenty of room for a camper/caravan an awning. All in all I would highly recommend, this family and dog friendly holiday site.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site is kept very clean as are the toilet and showers facilities all the staff are very friendly and helpful and the views across the bay were great

Disliked: The touring pitches are in need of some updating all the roads around the site are tarmac accept the touring pitches which were a mixture of mud and stone which gets very muddy in bad weather conditions the grey waste water disposal point had a brick wall around it which meant a back breaking job every time you needed to empty your waste water into it but the most disapointing part was the access steps down to the beach which was the main reason we booked St Audries bay the steps are very steep very uneven in my opinion very dangerous for anything less than a mountain goat to negotiate so we were unable to access the beach with our dog.Having spoken to a staff member about this they informed me that the site does not own the steps the local authority does and does not have any plans of carrying out any improvement works on them anytime soon

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The position of the site and view is beautiful. The toilet block is immaculate and cleaned regularly. The staff are really friendly. The pub snooker and games room are a great facility and well priced. The overall vibe is chilled. We didn't try the pool as it closed at 6pm and it was open only for a few sessions a day. Close to watchet which is a lovely place to visit

Disliked: Narrowness of hardstanding. We tried not to walk on the grass as it was like a quagmire after all the rain. The restaurant wasn't open even though it was still Easter half term, the pub didn't open till 5. After this week the pub wasn't open at all until May. If the pub wasn't open I'm not sure whether there would be access to the games room or snooker. I wouldn't visit if it was closed as there's nothing nearby within walking distance. A lot of the retro machines in the games room are not working.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely indoor pool, and a games room - with some great retro machines and pool tables. Dogs allowed in the bar and games room too. Great access to the beach v close - just down some steps off the site. Nice bar views of the sea, plenty of seating, with family board games to borrow. Clean and welcoming.

Disliked: The long steep drive (half a mile) down to the campsite is quite challenging to get back up. On the way out (towing our caravan) we met an elderly lady driving towards us who didn't want to reverse back - she eventually did, but we'd stopped and reversed, we then had to start from standing still on a v steep hill - our wheels span as it was so steep. V stressful. It would be great to have a traffic light system to get out without meeting oncoming traffic. The shower block is beautiful, warm and clean but only a trickle of water comes out of the shower. I would advise taking your washing up bowl and having a strip wash in the shower cubicle - fill your bowl from the basin first, as plenty of water pressure from basin taps. The pitches were very muddy/ waterlogged but we appreciate this can't be helped - we went out and bought rubber mats.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Access to the beach, although steps are slippery in places and uneven. Nice clean toilets and showers. Only 2 cubicles tho.

Disliked: Small gravel pitch with grass area at the side. Due to rain the grass was best described as a sand/mud swamp. Pool only allows 20 people per time. Shop is basic and limited opening time if you need something urgent. Road down to site is single track with some passing places, would be difficult in summer months towing a caravan.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: This site didn’t accommodate touring pitches at all well. Hard standing area was too small so had to use waterlogged grass to side of pitch. Access was tight for turning which caused a lot of people problems when trying to pitch Chemical waste disposal point was just very basic. Site facilities are very dated and not up to the standard for the price being charged per night

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so sorry that you felt the need to leave this review, our hard standings are large enough to accommodate most touring vehicles, the grass areas for awnings etc are very wet at the moment but we hope that our guests will understand that the weather has been relentless. We encourage feedback and reviews from our guests and are happy that the majority here on pitchup do not share your opinion. We are very proud of our site and are sorry that St Audries was not for you.

Local attractions

Pick up a safari tour at Dulverton or Dunster to see Exmoor’s wildlife in sit-down style, or take to your feet or wheels to explore the park’s walking and biking routes. Going there by night? Exmoor National Park is the first designated International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe: watch the stars at Haddon Hill or Wimbleball Lake, the first designated Dark Skies Discovery Site on Exmoor. The country park at Wimbleball is worth hanging around for a day or two too: it’s managed by the South West Lakes Trust and has an activity centre, trout fishery, bike route and nine-mile lake walk. Minehead, nine miles away from St Audries Bay, has a couple of record breakers: it’s the starting point of Britain’s longest walking trail, the South West Coast Path, and it has the country’s longest standard-gauge heritage railway, West Somerset Railway, starting at its station and running just over 20 miles to Bishops Lydeard. Weston-super-Mare is also within easy driving distance and has miles of clean beaches, a refurbished pier, a SeaQuarium, more donkeys and Britain’s only helicopter museum: give it a whirl. There are several other Somerset essentials to see within driving distance: cider farms at Taunton and Washford, two vineyards at Bridgwater, the Blackdown Hills to hike after the Quantocks, and famous Glastonbury and its abbey about 40 minutes’ drive away.
