General

  • Above the Somerset Levels with stunning views over 30 miles
  • 12 miles from Glastonbury and seven from Wells
  • Bar and restaurant on site with a wide range of options

‘We raise you up… high above the Lev– els…’. Be tuneful seeing the sights from Bowdens Crest Caravan & Camping Park, way way high above the Somerset Levels and the ancient market town of Langport – take a squint at that sunset pic for starters…

Views from budget-friendly Bowdens Crest include said Levels and its moors, the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the River Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Dene, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor – over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away.

Bowdens Crest has a play area on site, on the edge of nine and a half acres of natural woodland where the kids can burn off suitable amounts of energy to let the grownups crack open the wine at sunset.

The site is high up, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents; if you don’t have your own you can buy them in the site shop).

Amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, a disabled/family shower room and a family bath and shower room.

Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available, and the games/information room has books, board games, DVDs, pool tables, football tables, games machines and several sockets to charge phones and other equipment free of charge.

Alfie's Bar & Bistro will fill grumbling tums at breakfast, noon and dinner time from a menu of veggie options, kids' picks and hefty roasts (opening hours vary: please see site terms below); while you’re mulling it all over, you could sip on one of the local ciders or ales on offer and taking in the views from the bar’s garden. On a clear day, you may just find it impossible to move yourself…

Please note

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

When booking a pitch it is important that you state your correct unit type so that the correct pitch can be allocated. The site is unable to take bookings without this information.

Guests must be genuine holidaymakers and stay for holiday purposes only.

The bar and restaurant is open on Friday and Saturday evenings at 6pm and on Sunday lunchtimes. It can also be opened on request. It will also be open on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in mid-December and throughout the Christmas period.

Dogs are not allowed to be left alone in the caravans, but the owners can recommend a local dog daycare centre.

The setting was lovely. The pitch was large.
The toilets and showers were very clean.
The bistro/bar was nice and the food was lovely.

    Disliked:

Only issue was we paid for a hard standing pitch and it had gravel only a few feet square so it was only 1 corner of the caravan was on the gravel. The rest was on grass and it was very muddy.

Lovely friendly staff, super clean caravan & clean site 14/11/2017

The caravan was (an older model I think) spotlessly clean, very well equipped, with lots of homely touches, staying in November the site owner provided extra blankets. The licensed bistro food was excellent and not too expensive. The staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. The view from the picnic area of the site were stunning. Slightly off the beaten track, but this added to the peaceful atmosphere. We didn't use the touring caravan/camping facilities but I have no reason to think they wouldn't be up to a high standard.

    Disliked:

We couldn't get the broadband to work, it simply said we were out of range. I didn't make enquiries as we were only staying for a couple of days.

The park is under new management and to be honest they couldn’t do enough to help us! We had a lovely stay for 2 nights hardstanding pitch with no grass to drive over meant easy access on and off as it was a very wet weekend! The views from Alfie’s bar & restaurant are superb. A cosy log cabin with good selection of food and good prices. We booked the Sunday lunch and chose the meat which the manageress got from the local butchers. She did this for the 6 if us and lovely topside it was with ample veg! There is a small games room pool tables, tv etc which is kept toasty as are all the buildings. Toilet blocks very clean and warm too. All in all a perfect base for exploring towns such as Glastonbury, Wells, Street. All 30 mins away. We went to the carnival at north petherton and also Clarke’s village in Street. We will be returning soon thanks to all the staff for a lovely stay.

    Disliked:

Single track lane to campsite however visibility is very good and many passing places so no problems if you do meet another but very in frequent vehicle. Nit picking here but entrance sign as you turn into site needs to be on right hand side of road so you see it and don’t miss turn in.

Lovely hot shower with hot water produced by a flash heating boiler.
Nice quiet location with a lovely view over the surrounding countryside.

    Disliked:

We had a very cold night in standard caravan #10. The gas fire in the lounge wouldn't light and the wall heater panels did not produce enough heat to warm the rooms. I know now that the management would have moved us to another caravan if we had contacted them, but we were out at the Bridgwater carnival until about 00:30, and then arrived at the caravan to discover the problem. We didn't realise at that time that the heaters would not be warm enough and in the middle of the night it didn't occur to us to contact them.

I have now found out that the standard plus caravans have central heating and double glazing. In the winter months that sounds like a much better option and worth the extra cost.

Unfortunately for us it was a flying visit so we weren't able to spend time getting our grievance resolved, but having spoken to the manager I know they would have done everything they could for us if we had stayed longer. If we'd recognised the problems mid-afternoon when we dropped our bags off, and raised them with the team then, we'd have had a hugely better experience.

The site is under new management and the caravans are in the process of being refurbished and supplied with new bedding. I think this, along with some extra care and attention on cleaning, will greatly improve things.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback. Glad you enjoyed your stay, but at this fairly quiet time of year, we only open the Bar/Restaurant Thursday to Sunday, unless we're busy. However this is under review.
We hope to see you again, to take advantage of our returning customer policy.
Best wishes,

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street.

Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.)

The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales.

Tiny Wells about 20 miles away is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves and look for the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills, where dinosaurs, King Kong and pirate golf abound these days too.

Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing.

Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.

While you’re on the coast, the Animal Farm Adventure Park is a popular pick with animal-petting youngsters, and a SeaQuarium is a little further along the shore at Weston-super-Mare.
