  • Above the Somerset Levels with stunning views over 30 miles
  • 12 miles from Glastonbury and seven from Wells
  • Adults-only site with games room and information point
Phew, what a view… the outlook from Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park takes in the smashing Somerset Levels and its moors, the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the River Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Dene, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor – in fact over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away. Adults-only Bowdens Crest covers nine and a half acres of natural woodland of elevated land, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents). Amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, and an accessible shower room. Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available, and the games/information room has books, board games, DVDs, pool tables, football tables, games machines and several sockets to charge phones and other equipment free of charge.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Pitch was spacious, clean and neat. At first I thought it was a bit open, but liked it in the end. Was a short walk to the bathroom and shower, which was very clean. A few spiders in the corners, but the cleanliness over rid the creepy crawlies, lol! I like the code security on entrance, keep out unwanted guests 💯

Disliked: No dislikes.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Clean and well maintained site. Warm welcome. We were backpacking and as the bistro closed before we arrived, the owner very kindly arranged some food for us.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We liked the location, it was along narrow lanes but access was easy. It was quiet and peaceful, although we could occasionally hear the dogs from the kennels nearby they were not distracting or continuous. The facilities were clean with plenty of toilets and 3 showers (in females). The staff were friendly and checked on us each day. The ground was nice and flat with room to park cars. We were the only tent among lots of caravans and so had a choice of pitch. Everyone was nice and friendly.

Disliked: It was difficult to put pegs in fully as the ground underneath layer was gravelly. Many pegs got bent to secure the tent down as we did have a stormy night, but the tent remained up so all was well.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Such a welcoming community of people on site, with a bonus of no children. Never had to queue for the shower or toilet and they were kept well-stocked and clean. The dog field area was a welcome surprise. The bar was easily accessible but a good distance from the pitch so that any noise wouldn't disturb. There were some lovely walks out from the site itself and the scenery was beautiful.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely scenery from the bar, cheap prices, great dog field for exercising, extremely clean toilets and showers, with hot water. Friendly people on site. Stan the Manager very welcoming.

Disliked: This is mainly a residential caravan and lodge site. We were the only tents, however everyone was very nice and welcoming.

Electric hardstanding touring caravan pitch

Liked: Facilities very clean and pleasant and the whole site was exceedingly quiet. Our dogs loved the field. Stan was welcoming.

Disliked: Most of the 'touring' pitches were either seasonal or, seemingly, permanent. We felt like we were intruding slightly. A few yappy dogs around, which the owners did little to control, and several disregarded the 'dogs on leads' policy.

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street. Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.) The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales. Tiny Wells, about 20 miles away, is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills. Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing. Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.
