General

  • Lakeside site among the Exmoor hills
  • Sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and rowing on the lake
  • Walking and cycling trails, playground and café

Bimble around Wimbleball for some staggering views of this lake cradled by the Exmoor hills... The area's extensive shoreline, secluded inlets, and shimmering waters mean that Wimbleball Lake Campsite is a fisherman’s fairyland, with recent seasons having seen rod averages top four fish per angler.

The necessary fishing licences are available on site, and only fly fishing from the banks is permitted. On top of the great fishing, the lake offers an excellent range of watersports (sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and rowing). There are well-designed trails for cyclists and walkers, and a playground to keep the kids occupied while you polish off a cream tea in the café.

Wimbleball takes its green credentials very seriously (it has a gold award from the Green Business Tourism Scheme) and does some important conservation work, so the birdwatching and wildlife spotting here is excellent. Guests will be able to see some of the nocturnal residents too, such as the long-eared brown bats.

It's a stunning spot with lots to do and it's not overcrowded. There is the option of additional activities on the lake and a useful play area if you have children.

    Disliked:

The toilet is quite a walk and there is only one female and one male. They are building a new block though this winter, so this won't be a problem next year.

From the manager...

Dear guests, glad you had a great time at Wimbleball.
We have hire showers coming soon for the summer season. Also, a planning application has been approved for a new shower / toilet block on the actual campsite which should hopefully be ready for next season. Hope to see you again,

From the manager...

Dear guests, glad you had a great time at Wimbleball.
We have hire showers coming soon for the summer season. Also, a planning application has been approved for a new shower / toilet block on the actual campsite which should hopefully be ready for next season. We like to think that our site enables families to have a 'digital detox' i.e. spend time away from their phones, internet etc. and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the site.

Dear guests, glad you had a great time at Wimbleball.
We have hire showers coming soon for the summer season. Also, a planning application has been approved for a new shower / toilet block on the actual campsite - making facilities a lot closer for campers and separate to the public toilets.

Location and proximity to lake and activities. Cheap for pitching. Staff are helpful when finally located. Site Has lots of potential to become a great place to stay. adequate pitch sizing.

    Disliked:

Too cramped, staff difficult to locate and rarely available on site. Only 3 ladies and 3 gents toilets for whole site of over 30 pitches and are also shared with visiting public attending the lake or cafe. Cleanliness of said toilets is also questionable, certainly not cleaned daily. Site allows rowdy hen parties and young groups. No phone reception in the area at all and no WiFi signal. Lake unsafe for dogs due to blue algae, can be poisonous.

From the manager...

Dear guests, glad you had a great time at Wimbleball.
We have hire showers coming soon for the summer season. Also, a planning application has been approved for a new shower / toilet block on the actual campsite which should hopefully be ready for next season. Our new campsite warden, Ollie, is present 5 days a week (inc. evenings) to assist campers and maintain facilities to a higher standard than previously (and ensure groups are not rowdy / noisy at night).

Beautiful lake 06/08/2016

The site was very relaxed and the staff were friendly and helpful. There is a lovely little café on the site. We didn't eat there but it was handy for fresh milk and ice creams. There is a little park for the children that is easy to access and the lake itself is gorgeous. The site was quiet at night and early in the morning.

There were loads of activities available on the lake, but as we were only staying for a couple of nights en-route elsewhere we weren't able to make use of them.

The new shower block was good, really nice, hot showers.

    Disliked:

The toilets were not the best and weren't really kept very clean. There was often no toilet paper and there was no hand soap. That said they were definitely better than portaloos!

From the manager...

Glad the kids had a great time. We have invested in a new booking system which means we shouldn't have any more double bookings.
