General

  • Rural Somerset site surrounded by orchards on a working cider farm
  • West Bay, Lyme Regis and Forde Abbey within 40 minutes' drive
  • Bar open on Friday evenings for homemade cider and grilled meat

Fond of a spot of Somerset cider? You’ll be in your element at North Down Orchard, a small family-run farm five minutes’ drive from Crewkerne.

This is a place with a rich history of cider making, and you’ll be settling down right in the middle of the action as the pleasingly flat fields are surrounded by the apple trees that make up the 80 acres of orchard here. This is classic English countryside scenery, with the farm’s traditional thatched farmhouse at the centre (lots of visitors comment that visiting this farm is a little like stepping back in time…)

Much effort has gone into preserving things as they should be around here, so you’ll also be surrounded by lots of wildflowers, hedgerows and mature trees as well as the fruit orchards. And there are some gorgeous views beyond, too – the farm looks out over neighbouring farms and the Somerset hills. The border with Dorset is close by as well, so you can easily head out for walks in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or get down to the coast around West Bay and Lyme Regis.

And what of that pint of cider you’ve come all this way for? The best way to achieve that is to be here on a Friday, when the farm’s own Cider Barn and Woodsmoke Kitchen opens up to serve home-made cider alongside meat cooked on an open fire. Don’t panic if you’re not doing a Friday – there’s a pub within walking distance in the village of West Chinnock.

For other amenities there are plenty of shops and eateries in Crewkerne, along with a swimming pool where you can work up an appetite.

Lovely setting. Friendly hosts. The cider barn on Friday night was great!

    Disliked:

Only minor criticism is there is only one shower, which is a bit of a walk from the tents. Not really a huge issue though.

We loved our one night stay at North Down Orchard and it was the perfect place to take our young daughters for their first camping/glamping trip! The tents were lovely, a great size for us all and very comfortable. Having electricity in the tent, drinking water in the camp grounds, washing up facilities, the amazing and surprisingly pleasant composting toilet, access to a shower and flushing toilet, firepit/BBQ and outdoor seating area meant that we had the perfect balance of comfort whilst feeling the benefits of spending the night in the great outdoors! Other perks included the beautiful location, friendly owners, cider from the farm to sample and buy, the very friendly farm dog and sheep in the next field. We will come again and thank you for having us!

Welcoming host who made every effort to help us settle in whilst we stayed a night on the way to Devon. The host took his time to show us around the working cider farm that made a lovely setting for a stay on the newly erected Bell tents. A quaint area for the tents that had an area for a firepit and seating area outside. The nearby Crewkerne provides local amenities and the host did mention he was looking at installing a sink/wash basin area in the future. No areas to cook etc but to be fair it's not advertised as having that. Bring a couple of head torches to use too as there's no lights outside the tents. However kids loved having a takeaway and marshmallows on the fire. Plenty of space in the tent for a blow up double bed and probably an extra single too. The dog was very friendly too and kids enjoyed playing with him. It's clear this is something that is just taking off and it has huge potential. Thank you for giving us a little tour of the cider barn too. A proper treat and lovely cider 😋

    Disliked:

If it's a cold night bring a heater. I'm sure the host would have provided one should we have stayed longer. The towels could have been newer and fresher for the price paid. There is only one shower which is closer to the barn and a bit of walk from the tents but it was clean and tidy. There were a few stinging nettles around the areas of the tents which could have done with some clearing up. All in all we would go back though as I'm sure the host will be getting doing his best to improve the facilities and experience! There were a few flies and insects in the tent and again I'm sure if asked the host would have helped to get rid of them.

Local attractions

The scenery around here is rather pretty, so it all lends itself to getting out for a walk – perhaps in the Blackdown Hills to the east or the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south. Destinations of choice include places like Evershot (20 minutes’ drive), the village that inspired much of Thomas Hardy’s writing, and the huge Cerne Abbas Giant (35 minutes) carved into the chalk hillside.

And of course it’s also not far to get down to the Jurassic Coast for visits to West Bay (35 minutes) and Lyme Regis (40 minutes) – the latter being a great place to find fishing boat trips. Elsewhere along the coast are Beer Quarry Caves and Abbotsbury Swannery/Subtropical Gardens (both 50 minutes).

For other days out, find out more about the area’s favourite tipple at Perry’s Cider Mills (15 minutes), meet wild beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (35 minutes) or take a tour of Forde Abbey House and Garden (20 minutes).
