  • Fires encouraged: pits kindling and logs delivered at a small charge

Want to get away from it all, chill out and do some free-range camping? Check out Cheddar Petruth Paddocks.

Jules and the team have made it their mission to ensure all guests have a seriously laid-back time: you won’t find overly zealous wardens prowling about here, and open fires are positively encouraged – fire-drums, kindling, logs and lighters can be delivered to your door every evening for a small charge. (They simply ask you don't bring your own so they know what's being burnt). You’ll also get a specially put together guide to Cheddar on arrival with recommendations for great local food and drink and a couple of special deals just for staying at the site.

Take the Strawberry Line by foot or bike for 15 minutes from the Cheddar Petruth gate to arrive at Cheddar Gorge, or continue on and take the old railway line path to Yatton, where trains hauled strawberries from the slopes of Cheddar to the early morning markets in east London over half a century ago. The bottom gate of the site goes directly to the Somerset Levels and there are marked walking and nature trails all around from Cheddar Gorge.

The site has stunning views overlooking the Mendip Hills in one direction and towards the Somerset Levels in the other. There’s loads of open space for the kids to run about in, get to know other and make new friends. Towards the end of the day, Jules often recruits helpers and gives trailer rides as he delivers the logs.

Well-behaved animals of all shapes and sizes are welcome - as long as they come with well-behaved owners who pick up after them...

If you can't face putting up a tent, try one of the tipis or the cosy shepherd's hut, which both sleep up to eight people and come complete with massive firepit and luxury camp beds so you can spend the evening relaxing by the fire under the stars.

There are grass and hardstanding pitches too for tents, tourers and motorhomes to stay in all weathers: both the camping fields have lots of taps and there's a chemical disposal point for guests with tourers and motorhomes.

Facilities are basic but clean, and the piping hot high pressure showers, loos and washbasins are all cleaned twice a day. There's a washing-up bay and coloured bags are provided for you to separate your waste/recycling. If you can't do without your hairdryer, the site has 25 hook–up points and will be adding more over time.

Cheddar Petruth Paddocks welcomes families, singles, couples and well-behaved groups – come and say hello.

Please note

Campfires positively encouraged - Fire-drums, kindling, logs and lighters delivered to your door every evening for a small charge. Please don't bring your own so we know what's being burnt.

Autumn/winter bookings please note: Our showers and toilets are basic but clean. Some folk struggle with the fact they are also mobile. Our washing basins currently have cold water feed however piping hot water supplies our showers and covered washing up area. If any of the above is a problem for you we suggest you'll probably be happier elsewhere.

Terms and conditions

Please read the park terms and conditions below and the terms and conditions.

Additional terms

1. Our campsite’s safety and other rules must be observed at all times – we try to keep rules to a minimum and we will do our best to make sure you have a relaxing and brilliant time, but some things just need to be set out in rules, especially where your health and safety is concerned and that of other campers.

2. Sorry, we can accept no responsibility for loss of or damage to goods, or injury or death to persons, to the extent that such liability can be lawfully excluded. Cars, cycles, vehicles, motor caravans and tents, together with their contents and any accessories are left at your own risk. We cannot be held responsible for any loss of or damage from or to any vehicle or its contents whatsoever. We don’t expect bad stuff to happen and take all reasonable precautions to avoid any such incidents & we ask that you do the same.

3. If we are unable to make available the pitch or property booked through circumstances completely beyond our control (e.g. fire, flood, plague of tent chomping swamp monsters etc.), alternative accommodation may be offered, although this cannot be guaranteed. In these exceptional circumstances, deposits and any other monies would be fully refunded.

4. No refunds will be offered if you cannot complete your stay for any other reason. Sadly, this will include if we have to ask you to leave due to being too noisy at unreasonable hours or other seriously anti-social behaviour likely to offend either our staff or our other guests. It’s simple – be nice and have no worries!

5. We regret that deposits and monies paid are non-refundable/transferable, except for 3 above.

6. The number of people must not exceed the number stated in the booking form, and in any event shall not exceed the capacity as advertised. If the number of people in your booking changes please just drop us a line and we will do our best to accommodate you all.

7. We reserve the right to decline group bookings.

8. 16 and 17 year olds must have written parental permission sent prior to arrival.

9. Facilities and amenities may be altered or withdrawn if circumstances beyond our control necessitate this (e.g. Health and Safety rules, drought orders, excessive rainfall, another attack by swamp monsters etc.).

10. Music must be turned off at 11pm after-which fireside chatter is fine, singing, screaming and shouting is not. Guests not respecting this rule will be asked to leave.

11. On the campsite please note that if you reduce the number of people, we are unable to give you a refund.

12. Hirers are responsible for making good any damage or breakages, replacing like with like wherever possible. Please advise reception of any breakages or damages as soon as possible during your holiday. We won’t rip you off with any breakage charges but please do be honest.

13. We ask that you deposit all rubbish in the coloured waste bags provided and take them to the waste point before leaving.

14. If you’ve stayed in our tipi we simply ask that you leave it clean and tidy at the end of your holiday, and we reserve the right to make additional charges in the event that our normal cleaning procedures are deemed inadequate to ensure the property is ready for our next guests.

15. In the event of a complaint, please notify reception immediately so that this can be resolved to your satisfaction during your holiday. Unfortunately, we cannot be held liable for any shortcomings if these are not reported at the time. Please don’t vent your dissatisfaction via a poor review without giving us the opportunity to fix it.

16. Dogs are allowed if the appropriate fee is paid. Pets are allowed on the understanding they are not permitted on any furniture and are kept under close control at all times while on the site. You agree to clear up after your dog and to dispose of the waste in the nearest bin –this means a 100% on site picking regime – no flicking!

17. You are welcome to have visitors come to you pitch but for the security and safety of all on the site all visitors must sign in at reception before entering the camping fields and please note that when the site is very busy we may not be able to accommodate any visitors. There is a notional £2.00 charge to cover their use of our facilities. All guests must be off site by 10pm at the latest.

18. Firewood is available to purchase on site at a cost of £5.00 per large sack. Please don’t bring your own as we graze the land and need to know what’'s being burnt.

19. A £100 damage/cleanliness deposit is required on arrival for the hired accommodation (tipi and shepherd's hut) and will be refunded on departure after inspection of your unit should no damage/losses be found.

20. No vehicle movement after dark.

21. Departure times:
No departure time for the non-electric grass pitches, but if customers are still onsite at nightfall they will be charged. Electric grass and hardstanding pitches: by 12noon.
