Relight your fire with a stay at Burnham-on-Sea Holiday Village: sparky types and slow burners alike will find plenty to get them fired up at this attractive seaside site in Somerset. The tranquil green setting, complete with pretty lakes and a nature reserve, and only a stroll from the seafront, will have you smouldering, for starters... This chilled-out, roomy site is perfect for families looking for a relaxing break, although there’s plenty of fun stuff to get your little sparks fizzing with excitement: free children’s clubs for all ages, adventure playgrounds, and a huge range of activities, from mini-sports for pre-schoolers to wacky character Olympics, and circus school to beachcomber treasure hunts. You might strike it lucky at the match-standard coarse fishing lakes, and if the heat is on, the smart outdoor pool is perfect for a sizzling swim and a bake on the grassy terrace (if not, there’s an equally fab indoor version, with a water slide and fun inflatables). Most activities at Burnham-on-Sea Holiday Village are free, but for a small extra charge - about £5 or £6 a session - a “pay as you go” Activity Pass buys you coaching in tennis, archery, fencing or fishing, or access to more adventurous activities such as aqua jets, inflatable water walkers or target shooting. Young Bear Grylls in the making can get stuck into the wildly entertaining Nature Rockz activities run at the park. Learn all sorts from bushcraft skills to building shelters and making campfires, kids could even get the chance to try pond dipping, beachcombing or go on a bug safari. (A small charge may apply to some Nature Rockz activities.) The smart Mash and Barrel lounge bar and café offers a great range of family-friendly food options throughout the day, and the live bands and shows in the ShowBar may tempt you to burn the midnight oil...

Local attractions

Meander into pretty Burnham-on-Sea, which has miles of golden sands (with donkeys, natch), and a bustling town centre with plenty of places to eat out. Wannabe Doctor Doolittles can talk to the animals at the Animal Farm Adventure Park, just four miles away, where there are plenty of opportunities for furry cuddles, plus a giant indoor play area, and occasional appearances from the likes of Peppa Pig or Scooby Doo. More wild fun is to be had at Cricket St. Thomas, whose beautiful grounds are home to meerkats, wallabies and the like, or for big game and monkey mayhem, try the drive-through safaris at Longleat House, a little further afield. Cheesy grins are guaranteed with a daytrip to Cheddar. Visitors can tour a dairy to see the famous cheese being made, sample their way through a sweetie factory, check out the toy museum, or simply take in the dramatic stalactite caves and plunging curves of the Cheddar Gorge. Join the witch hunt inside spooky Wookey Hole Caves, near Wells: somewhere among these wow-inducing underground caverns and lakes lurks the famous Witch of Wookey... Ramblers can romp around the remote tors and balancing rock formations of Bodmin Moor, and many tourists do some soul-searching at the haunted Bodmin Jail. Those left wanting moor can lose themselves in the savage beauty of Exmoor National Park, the inspiration for Lorna Doone, with resident Exmoor ponies and red deer, and the majestic pile of Dunster Castle on its eastern edge. Another popular stately home is medieval Forde Abbey, near Chard: a former Cistercian monastery with 30 acres of gardens. Anyone who has run out of steam after all that sightseeing can let the train take the strain, with a picturesque round trip through the Mendip Hills on the restored steamies of the East Somerset Railway.
