General

  • Small but spacious site with excellent amenities
  • Excellently-kept amenities including ensuite shower rooms
  • 8 miles from Glastonbury Tor and a 40-minute drive from Bristol

Got that Friday feeling – on a Monday? Want to skip out of town and lie low?

Hole up at The Hideout Camping and Caravan Park, hidden away in Somerset surroundings but only eight miles from Glastonbury Tor, 40 minutes’ drive from Bristol and within an hour of Exeter, Bath and the beaches of Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare.

Turn off the M5 at Junction 23 and drive four miles through wildlife-laden Somerset countryside to go underground at this peaceful place, with loads of room for kids – and suddenly rejuvenated adults – to run around in.

This is a small site, but so popular you’ll probably want to keep it to yourself: the excellent amenities include separate ladies and gents’ blocks with ensuite shower room in each, sockets for electric razors, drinking water and a chemical disposal point. There are also two separate toilets for guests' use, and free wifi.

Guests have access to a fridge, freezer, kettle and microwave, and when it’s time for washing up, even the dishwashing area is undercover…

Please note that this is a relaxed peaceful site and so ball games are not allowed.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Best campsite I have stayed on. Only stayed one night as were travelling around cornwall/devon. Toilets and showers were the cleanest of our whole trip and because the campsite isnt huge, everything was just a short walk from our pitch. Allocated pitch before arrival so checking in was easy. 10/10.

Sorry for very late review - I stayed here in June 2017.

EXCELLENT campsite! I had a fantastic trip here and extended my stay for a day as I really didn't want to leave! The owners were great, I felt very welcomed, accommodated and looked after - as a female camping solo, I felt safe and knew I could contact Jackie if there was anything at all that I needed. I'd requested a quiet private pitch and I was given the exact one I would have chosen for myself so I was really pleased! Jackie also suggested a great way to get back onto the main road safely and where to turn around so as to not have to turn right across such a main road. This was so helpful and I was so impressed by this level of help and care.

The facilities are excellent, I have never seen showers/toilets like it on a campsite ever before, they were spotless and just like a bathroom in a lovely house. There was plenty of local information available for touristy ideas, a fridge and freezer, charging point and a kettle - all little things that made my stay even more comfortable.

The site is in a scenic location and I enjoyed driving around the area seeing the small villages and local churches (there are a few!) and I used this location as a base to visit Glastonbury village every day which was an easy 20-minute drive away. The field is level, open, spacious and very well maintained. Wifi access was great and although not something I require, it was helpful that it was available to me so I did make good use of it.

I was so thoroughly impressed with my stay here, I feel guilty it has taken me so long to write this review but I'm glad I remembered as it really was a great stay. I will definitely return here, there is no doubt. The best campsite I've ever stayed on!

Nothing not to like - gorgeous area, small well-appointed site (the shower rooms are bigger than our bathroom at home), well-kept camping field which drains well too. The owners are fantastic and made us feel really welcome before we had even arrived. They also gave us some great suggestions for things to do in the area while we were there. For a quiet week away yet close to most attractions this is the perfect site.

What a little gem this site is. The facilities were well maintained and kept tidy throughout the day. Really appreciated the ensuite showers and toilets. Even on busy bank holiday never found I had to wait for one to become free which shows they are perfectly numbered for the size of the site. On arrival we were greeted personally and made to feel very welcome onsite and were given some recommendations on where to visit during our stay. 10/10 couldn't ask for any more out of a lovely little site. Will be returning.

There wasn't anything to dislike about this site. It was easy to find, especially having been sent a detailed email and a text message with directions. Jackie and Glyn are not only very welcoming, but take the time and effort to make this a lovely, friendly and very comfortable site. Having left Somerset to travel on up to Surrey, where we spent two nights in one of popular 'chain of hotels'...the bathroom made me want to return to the campsite. The cleanliness and the personal touches/ attention to detail (simple things like hand wash and clean towels) that Jackie and Glyn provide in the shower and toilet block at this site creates a homely and welcoming feel, they clearly take a lot of pride in their business and we enjoyed meeting them both and loved our short stay here. The location is perfect for exploring the beautiful county of Somerset.

Directions

We are conveniently located approximately four miles from Junction 23 of the M5 motorway.

Heading along the A39 on the Street/Glastonbury road, you will pass The Olive Mill on the left-hand side where you will then take the next right-hand turn to the village of Stawell.

Follow the road down and at the bottom of the hill the road bends to the right. Please follow this road until you reach a T-junction.

Turn left and follow the main Stawell Road for half a mile and The Hideout is on the left-hand side (second gateway). You may also want to look at Google maps before you set off.

Please note: turn down Tower Road and not Ford Lane.

Local attractions

Very friendly The Hideout owners Jackie and Glyn can offer heaps of advice and info on what to see and do when going off adventuring in these parts, with piles of coast, city and countryside pursuits available within an hour’s drive at most.

The smallest city in England is the City of London, but those looking for a less packed and more relaxed small city sightseeing excursion can wend their way to Wells 20 minutes from The Hideout, a medieval cathedral city and the second smallest city in England.

Leave lots of time to get there: Glastonbury Abbey, Glastonbury Tor and the village of Street, home of Clarks Shoes and Clarks Village, are all on the way. (More shopping, you say? Flash your cash at Kilver Court in Shepton, Mallet, Cribbs Causeway at Bristol, Cabot Circus at Bristol and Bath, and buying All The Cheese at nearby Cheddar.)

Although it’s teeny tiny, there’s a goodly amount of things to do in Wells after letting your jaw drop at the rather fab 12th-century cathedral... History boffins should also make room for Bishops Palace next door, Vicars’ Close, the oldest residential street in Europe, Grade II-listed Milton House overlooking the city, and the Wells and Mendip Museum’s fossil and geology collections from the Mendip Hills.

One of the exhibits at the Wells and Mendip Museum (this one should freak/fascinate the kids) is a skeleton found in nearby Wookey Hole Caves and thought to be the Witch of Wookey Hole (woooooh).

The Wookey Hole Caves are just outside Wells and are now a major family attraction with life-size dinosaurs, adventure golf mirror maze and more; visitors can meet the witch herself during school holidays and most weekends.

Engine enthusiasts can travel to Somerset museums revolving around motors and transport, such as the Helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare, and the Haynes International Motor Museum and Fleet Air Arm Museum, both at Yeovil.

The history of Somerset is covered at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton (more shopping here at the Orchard Centre), and at Glastonbury’s Somerset Rural Life Museum, in a fourteenth century barn with exhibits on Somerset’s agricultural and social history (you might particularly like the three-seater toilet).

Seaside days at the Somerset coastline, Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea are also within easy reach, and it’s less than an hour to some of Dorset’s most prized Jurassic Coast and sailing/surfing beaches like Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Bridport.
