  • Small eco-friendly site on a family farm in the Dorset countryside
  • Pick your own pitch on an oak-lined field; campfires allowed
  • Close to The Tank Museum and beaches at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door
If you’re in the mood for a secluded stay among unspoilt Dorset countryside, how does a farm in Wareham, a mile from the nearest road and on the edge of the River Frome, sound? From Snelling Farm Campsite you can see the sunrise through the mist of the river, take in the glorious countryside air and watch the abundance of roe deer grazing in the evening sunset. This is a real wildlife haven; keep your eyes peeled for swans, ducks and herons on the river, while catching glimpses of a passing kestrel, hare and perhaps a barn owl at dusk if you're lucky. Keen campers themselves, the owners like to keep things simple and relaxed. Back-to-basics camping is championed here, with stargazing and social meetups around a campfire encouraged. When you arrive, simply follow the signs to the field and pick your spot on the oak-lined 23-acre field to pitch up. There’s plenty of room to roam on the unrestricted, non-allocated pitches (particularly fab if you’re bringing your dog along), and the team will be over to say hi when they’ve finished tending to their animals. With sustainability in mind, facilities include electric hot showers and solar showers, washing-up sinks, eco-friendly compost toilets (please bring your own loo roll) and drinking water taps. The villages of Wool and Crossways (both three miles) have convenience stores for supplies.

Liked: As ever, a beautifully chilled weekend stay at Snelling Farm, even the rain and wind didn't put us off. Toilets and showers are always clean, staff are friendly and the setting is lovely, great for star gazing! Great location for walks, bike rides and swims, good place for cake within short walk to the walled garden too. I like the fact this campsite hasn't been overrun with 'glamping' facilities ' too much, it feels like proper camping, but with the added benefit of loos and showers!

Liked: Snelling Farm was sooo lovely, the fields were spacious, tidy and accessible. The loos, showers were clean and tidy! The little shop has a great range of food items.. even a coffee machine ⭐️ Then to top it off the staff and owners were super friendly and helpful. I’ve already recommended this to friends. I can’t wait to come again. Thanks

Disliked: Nothing related to the people and farm it’s self. But beware the phone signal isn’t always good… but I personally liked this to have a tech break.

Liked: Great campsite that enabled me and my two boys to be away from the usual distractions of electronic devices. Loads of space on the site with basic but good facilities that focus on being eco friendly which is another bonus. Perfect location to explore the amazing coastline with lulworth cove and durdle door only 25 mins away, myself and the boys can’t wait to go back!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome. Large enough site with a good ethos. Well suited to families. Nice tucked away location and a lovely ford to visit a short walk or bike ride away. Reception shop although small had great quality meat from the farm which we enjoyed. Hay bale play area for kids and the owner even comes to do 'Sheepdog stories' one evening (with the sheepdog).

Disliked: The site has 2 fields, one for groups / those wishing to make a bit of noise later, one for early to bed / quiet / non groups. We stayed in the quiet field but there were plenty of family groups here making noise after the advised curfew. It would be better if the field guidelines were enforced for groups. Hot water not really available - We're ok with cold showers but it's really required for washing up and washing hands.

Liked: Nice place, away from the main traffic, cosy, good for kids since they all gather around to play in the middle of the field where the hay stacks and the swings are. No signal! For once you get to feel what it’s like to not check your phone every couple of minutes

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Choice of areas to pitch in, we chose the family field but next time we'll be going for the early bird field. compost toilets and solar showers were plentiful and pleasant enough. We were given a warm welcome and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The little shepherd hut farm shop was fab. Considering the farm is in a popular area the site was remote. Highly recommended using the Snelling Farms own websites directions.

Disliked: The only thing we struggled with was the ground and driving the tent pegs in. But that was our rookie mistake and cheap tent pegs. Definitely need decent pegs as the soil is very stoney a few inches down. Not really a dislike, more a learning curve.

Liked: I hadn’t booked anywhere and found Snelling Farm after searching online. So glad I found it. I usually prefer wild camping but Snelling feels remote and the large, beautiful field surrounded by and dotted with large trees means you can find a quiet spot. Facilities were great - simple, clean and eco friendly. I think it is owned by a farming couple and I met the wife, who was really friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again.

Route directions

Do not follow your satnav as it will try and take you through a deep river. When you pass the left-hand turning for Clouds Hill/Bovington Tank Museum, start to slow down as you are taking the next left in 100 yards. Continue down this forest track for about a mile. Take the only turning left (footpath signposted Bovington), which takes you between two fields. On the bend, continue straight through the farm gate and you will see the pitch fields.

Local attractions

There’s fresh air aplenty here; the farm is set on the Lawrence of Arabia Trail, which has more than six miles of family-friendly cycling and walking through Moreton and Bovington forest. Your adventures can continue into the neighbouring Affpuddle forest, too. A 10-minute walk from the farm is Moreton Ford, a scenic spot for a picnic by the water, paddling and (maybe) catching a small fish. Slightly further on, you can get your hands (and mouths) on tasty breakfasts and cream teas in Moreton village (15-minute walk), and a visit to the church of St Nicholas and the grave of author TE Lawrence comes recommended. Despite its rural location, the site is within a short drive of many attractions. The Tank Museum and Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre are both about a 10-minute drive, and Warmwell Leisure Centre (15 minutes) is another good choice, with an indoor pool with wave machine and flume, a dry ski slope and an indoor soft play area to amuse the whole gang. You can also have a walk or swim at nearby Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door beaches (both 25 minutes' drive). Or take your pick of historical and impressive buildings at Athelhampton House & Gardens (15 minutes), Lulworth Castle (20 minutes), Corfe Castle (20 minutes) or Kingston Lacy estate (half an hour).
