General

  • Peaceful rural site by the Frome river, 10 minutes' drive from Wool
  • Half an hour's drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Less than 10 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum

Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckfordwood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset.

Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them.

Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze.

Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Please note you need to bring your own leads if you book an electric hook-up.

Very welcoming. The person on reception was helpful, relaxed and always willing to help. The toilet facilities were great. Clean and plenty to use. Loved the layout of the tent pitches with many with electric and a light. Water easily accessible too.

    Disliked:

Perhaps more showers would be useful and an area to walk the dog but really we were more than happy and will definitely return again.

The Owner and quietness. Very relaxed atmosphere. Toilets were clean as was the site. Level pitches. Owner was very helpful at all times.

    Disliked:

Cold shower. Washing up water luke warm. Pitches would be to close for my liking when it was busy. No on site entertainment. Ground was really hard unsuitable for cheap tent pegs. It was once a quarry.

Lovely campsite, greeted on arrival and given good choice of pitches. Toilets and showers clean, and nice washing up area. Well lit at night, but not too intrusive. Nice and flat so all pitches good for tents. Not too big so nice and peaceful. Bit of a walk to the nearest pub, but didn't put us off. Had a great stay and will definitely return.

    Disliked:

Shower pressure not amazing when more than one being used at a time, but warm water throughout the day so can't complain!

    - Location: relatively close to Poole
    - Location: close to the Jurassic coast
    - Good friendly advice (we had selected a pitch and were advised on likely noise levels; we moved to what was a nice quiet spot).
    - Flexibility to be able to stay only 1 night
    - Option for a firepit... although we take advantage this time

    Disliked:

We went walking; the road was quite busy and we eventually abandoned and drove down to Lulworth Cove and walked along the coast across the firing range - relatively free of people and all the better for it!

The toilet and shower block were very clean and maintained. It was nice and peaceful even with children playing. Pitches were a good size, so everyone wasn’t sat on each other. The atmosphere was friendly and inviting.

    Disliked:

The only downside I would say is the ground is quite stony but that’s what being out in the countryside is like so it’s not a dislike.

For holiday makers who like a site where children are able to run around the site and play and can have large scale ball games in the camping areas, this site would suit their needs well.

Owners are friendly and are attempting to invest in facilities to improve the camping experience.

Electric hook ups are modern and well spaced around the site.

Quick drive to Wool (for rail station), Wareham and Corfe Castle.

    Disliked:

Very noisy during Bank Holiday weekend due to a large group taking over one area of the site. Very loud music until late and loud conversations and shouting until 4am. Campsite website states that loud parties are not acceptable on this site at any time.

Pitches are very close together not allowing enough space between tents. I had to park car on next door pitch which would have created problems if this hadn't been available. Be aware that if two above average sized tents are on adjoining pitches it would not be possible to have the recommended distance between tents, and certainly no space for car.

Very strange shower layout. 3 showers share one changing area with a lock on the door. If one person locks the door, all 3 showers are out of use.

Showers were very dirty during Bank Holiday weekend. Toilet paper and soap kept running out.

No cold water in washing area so had to clean teeth with hot water.

Several campers had their own music on outside their tents which I consider anti-social. Not really a peaceful experience due to this.

Entrance to site is very untidy which does little to enhance first impressions.

Not possible to walk anywhere safely from site so need to be prepared to drive for everything.

No restriction on number of cars per pitch. Several campers had more than one vehicle and this gave the impression of staying on a car park when the site was busy.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away).

As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life.

And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.
