- Family-run site overlooking the Purbeck Hills
- Within half a mile of scenic steam train rides on Swanage Railway
- Well-stocked shop selling camping accessories as well as essentials
If a must on your family holiday sensibly includes a ride on a scenic steam railway (perhaps being able to drive it your very own self too), a first-class bet is Harmans Cross Camping Park within half a mile of vintage Swanage Railway.
The six-mile track runs from Wareham through splendidly scenic Dorset countryside including past legendary Corfe Castle, down to the award-winning sands of Swanage beach. You can step up to the plate yourself on a driving experience, turn up for one of the regular events, or book into the dining car to take dinner along with your views.
Elsewhere around, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, climbing and golf are all close by; the Purbeck Hills are within five miles, and more award-winning sands are at Poole six or so miles away.
Harmans Cross is a family-run site in eight acres of open countryside with views over the Purbeck Hills in the village of Harman's Cross, between Corfe Castle village and Swanage. Its well-stocked shop at reception sells essentials and camping accessories, and there's a well-maintained toilet and shower block and a washing-up area also on site.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.
Large tents/caravans: check the restrictions on unit dimensions to ensure your unit is suitable for the space you will be provided with.

Take the A351 between Swanage and Corfe Castle, when you come into Harmans Cross, turn into into Haycrafts Lane, take the second right into Faryls Way, the campsite is at the end of the lane.
Pick up the Swanage Railway in Harman's Cross village a couple of hundred metres' walk from the site (if you prefer to Park and Ride, you can do this at nearby Norden). The railway runs from its starting point of Wareham, past Harman's Cross, Corfe Castle and Herston Halt before arriving at Swanage beach.
At the sands of popular Dorset seaside town Swanage, you'll have miles of clean and safe beach to wander, along with an award-winning pier and access to the fossils and spectacular scenery of the splendid Jurassic Coast. (If you hanker after a nudist beach, one is a few miles away at Studland.)
More spectacular coastal sights can be seen with a trip west of Swanage, past Durlston Country Park to Seacombe, Winspit and St Aldhelms Head, via the pub and fossil museum at Worth Matravers. Inland, hike the Purbeck Hills five miles away, or have a nature spotting day at Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve, within seven.
Corfe Castle, the spiffing ruins that inspired Enid Blyton's Famous Five, is three miles away: picnics of ginger beer and hard-boiled eggs nearby are practically obligatory.
