General

  • Family-run site overlooking the Purbeck Hills
  • Within half a mile of scenic steam train rides on Swanage Railway
  • Well-stocked shop selling camping accessories as well as essentials

If a must on your family holiday sensibly includes a ride on a scenic steam railway (perhaps being able to drive it your very own self too), a first-class bet is Harmans Cross Camping Park within half a mile of vintage Swanage Railway.

The six-mile track runs from Wareham through splendidly scenic Dorset countryside including past legendary Corfe Castle, down to the award-winning sands of Swanage beach. You can step up to the plate yourself on a driving experience, turn up for one of the regular events, or book into the dining car to take dinner along with your views.

Elsewhere around, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, climbing and golf are all close by; the Purbeck Hills are within five miles, and more award-winning sands are at Poole six or so miles away.

Harmans Cross is a family-run site in eight acres of open countryside with views over the Purbeck Hills in the village of Harman's Cross, between Corfe Castle village and Swanage. Its well-stocked shop at reception sells essentials and camping accessories, and there's a well-maintained toilet and shower block and a washing-up area also on site.

The location is the only thing we liked about this campsite.

    Disliked:

If you would like to be spoken to like you're the scum of the earth and have your children spoken to in the same way then definitely give this place a visit!!
We were greeted in the most unfriendly manor as soon as we arrived by the lady who runs the campsite, no hello, no welcome, just a serious attitude problem with us from the second we walked in, which made us feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable which put a massive downer on what was a very excited family ready to go camping.
We had a small van with us (which isnt used for work purposes), we were then told we couldnt have the van on site and we would have to go park in a public car park, when we asked the reason why we were simply told "that's the rules haven't you read them"
Not having the van on site with us wouldn't of been as much of an issue if we were just spoken to nicely about it and maybe explained why and then showed a decent and safe place to park.

Next it came to discussing the bookings, I had booked two pitches, both under my name, which their website had advised me their do if you are coming as a group! The prices were the same for both bookings according to their webite and my confirmation emails and texts but this again seemed to be to a problem and yet again was dealt with in the most unorganised unprofessional way, we were then snapped at again just for asking if we could pay on card! Which could of been answered quite simply in a polite way but apparently that was too much effort for her too!!
On top of all this my 10 year old daughter visited the shop and she spoke to her in the same way she did to us adults which obviosuly upset my daughter!
I'm absolutely disgusted with the way we were treated, the staff let down the campsite as it's in a beautiful location! I didnt expect 5 star service but just basic manors and decency would of been nice!!

The surrounding areas are great to walk the dogs

    Disliked:

Where shall I start! Firstly when we booked on pitch up we was not informed we couldn't turn up in a commercial van on this campsite, we only had this due to moving to the area so we took advantage of the space in the van and booked a few camp sites to see the Dorset coast.
The lady owner is HORRIBLE and RUDE to be polite. We we turned up in the van and it was like we had turned up in a HGV, I don't see a problem what transport it is as long as it's reasonable size. We was told to hide it in a corner with our tent and try not to drive in and out to often in a very rude tone!!
Our dog was off the lead for 30 seconds whilst was getting out the tent and to get in the van, the horrible lady stormed out the shop leaving customers in there and shouted at us to get it on the lead!
My opinion She needs to be on a lead with a muzzle on! Let me say there was a couple of other dogs off the lead at times, I didn't see her shouting at them.
Paying for a shower was not on, specially when it only last a couple of mins.
The actual campsite was very hilly which was hard to find a spot to pitch up as the best spots were taken. Plus we had to be told where to go to hide to van, pathetic!!
Couldn't relax here. Always being watched.
Plenty of other sites in area which are very accommodating and very friendly.
Also after reading a few other comments left by other people I'm surprised she has a business.

Local attractions

Pick up the Swanage Railway in Harman's Cross village a couple of hundred metres' walk from the site (if you prefer to Park and Ride, you can do this at nearby Norden). The railway runs from its starting point of Wareham, past Harman's Cross, Corfe Castle and Herston Halt before arriving at Swanage beach.

At the sands of popular Dorset seaside town Swanage, you'll have miles of clean and safe beach to wander, along with an award-winning pier and access to the fossils and spectacular scenery of the splendid Jurassic Coast. (If you hanker after a nudist beach, one is a few miles away at Studland.)

More spectacular coastal sights can be seen with a trip west of Swanage, past Durlston Country Park to Seacombe, Winspit and St Aldhelms Head, via the pub and fossil museum at Worth Matravers. Inland, hike the Purbeck Hills five miles away, or have a nature spotting day at Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve, within seven.

Corfe Castle, the spiffing ruins that inspired Enid Blyton's Famous Five, is three miles away: picnics of ginger beer and hard-boiled eggs nearby are practically obligatory.
