General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Free fishing on the site's own lakes and rivers
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond is reached via a quiet country lane and meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker.

The number of pitches is carefully managed among all this undisturbed space and, even better for a stampede of liberated parents, the park is adults-only.

Restful pastimes on site include free fishing on the park’s lakes and rivers (bring your own equipment and pick up a fishing licence when you arrive); boules; woodland walks and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

Guests can generally pick their own pitches and a particularly wildlife-filled option is available in ‘Emma’s Field’, a woodland glade. Although Back-of-Beyond is very dog-friendly, they aren’t allowed in Emma’s Field or around the fishing lakes (but pooches can let off steam in the ten-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines).

New owners Victoria and Martin took over Back-of-Beyond in February 2014 and are gently determined to keep the peaceful ethos of the site as well as keep guests tranquil re standards: the up-to-date facilities include three heated loo and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

Clean, peaceful, excellent facilities, friendly and helpful staff. 26/07/2017

Overall the park was very organised, we liked the fact it was for adults only and even though it was busy the people staying all respected each other and kept any noise to a minimum in the evening.

We stayed in Emma's Glade and liked the fact that it was off bounds to dogs (there were plenty other places in the park for dog owners to go), which made it a lot more relaxing.

The facilities were really good, though we did have the odd broken toilet seat but think it may have been a phantom toilet seat breaker as one was broke one day and then the next day it was fixed but the one across the way then broke, but fixed the next day and then another broke - it was odd but may have been the style of hinges used (obviously no fault of the park but the manufacturer).

However that certainly has not put us off staying again @ Back of Beyond. The shop was useful and also the croissants and fire pits came in very handy. Oh and I have to say the visit by the local falconers was very interesting (some beautiful birds) and the Fish and Chip van that came on the Saturday did some of the best chips that reminded us of when we were younger.

All in all a very impressive site, friendly and helpful staff, beautiful countryside and walks, just exactly what you need after a long hard week.. a nice relaxed campsite.

    Disliked:

    Nothing to report here..!

From the manager...

Thank you for your excellent review.
We are sorry about the phantom toilet seat. They will all be changed by next season.

Many thanks again.

    Disliked:

I find it difficult to find anything to dislike about our visit.if I had to make a criticism it would be the lane from the road to the park, but I realise this is shared.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for the excellent review.
You are correct regarding the lane that unfortunately we do not own but we are working with the owners for a solution very soon.
Many thanks again.

Excellent site, very friendly staff, quiet location, huge pitch size. 24/07/2017

  • Liked:

Quiet location, large pitch sizes, layout of site overall, friendly and helpful staff, proximity to local supermarkets and town centres. All facilities were of a very good standard, water pressure for showers was really good and temperature of the showers was perfect.

    Disliked:

The pot-hole laden road leading directly upto the site. Not only is it annoying as you find yourself going crawling pace and manouvering all over the road so your wheels don't dissapear into another country but it distracts from the high quality of the campsite. Even if the holes were just filled in with a bit of gravel it would be a major improvement.

From the manager...

Thank you for your top scoring review. We are so pleased you had such a great stay.
The approach road is constantly being worked on. You may have noticed that our stretch (1/4 mile) was tarmaked by us this year. The rest is a shared stretch that are filled constantly by unfortunately with heavy rain they become poor again.
We are working on them again at the moment and we have a plan in place for a improvement program this winter that will have a major effect for next season.

Many thanks again.

    Staff are friendly and helpful..
I loved this place so much!

    Disliked:

Not being able to burn my own firewood 😉 understandably the site is SSSI proctected and i was happy to take my wood home!!!

From the manager...

Thank you so much for this fantastic review of our park. Emma's Glade is beautiful. We are so glad you enjoyed the park, all it had to offer as well as the surrounding area.

Being one of the only local campsites to offer fires we have to be incredibly careful. With the SSSI status and all the surrounding woodlands we were informed that no natural wood log's could be burned due to the sparks, smoke and risks involved. Therefore we supply wood burning pits with safe wood briquettes. These burn very hot with flames, but no sparks or smoke. Our customers do love them. You can always in the future bring your own briquettes from a garden centre / DIY store if you prefer. However we buy in such bulk that we are very keen on prices.

Do come again soon.

Directions

We do have issues with our address when put into some satnav devices. Please print out these directions and follow these when you are close to the site to ensure you find us easily.

From the north or east
From the M3, take J14 onto the M27 westbound and join the A31 (signposted Ringwood). Pass Ringwood; stay on the A31 to St. Leonards and pass St. Leonards Hotel on left. At the next roundabout (signed Boundary Lane), turn right into the site lane. Take care: this turn is set back from the roundabout by a few yards, so look for our sign and one for Shamba.

From the west
Follow the signs for Ringwood on the A31 eastbound. Pass The Woodman pub on your left. At the next roundabout go straight over and immediately left into the site lane.

Drive straight down our lane, pass Shamba and go through the twin towers to our barrier. When you arrive at the barrier system press the button for attention.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

On the edge of the New Forest, Back-of-Beyond has Avon Heath and Moors Valley Country Parks, Ringwood and Avon Heath within soothing cycling distance (hire a bike on site if you’re not bringing your own); Bournemouth and Poole a little further on, and for city sightseers, Salisbury and Christchurch within easy reach. Maps of local bike routes are provided free in reception. If you’re sightseeing via car, the A31 is half a mile away for access to the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast.

Very varied sights and activities are handy within an easy five—15 minutes’ drive, whether your tastes range towards pottering around museums, historic houses and New Forest villages, birdwatching on Avon Heath, picking up bargains at boot sales/shopping centres, or sampling the best of cream teas and local produce in Dorset cafés and restaurants.

The biggest undercover market in the south of England, including a massive flea market and car boot sale every Saturday, is at Wimborne a few miles away (do try and make room for Wimborne Minster and Stapehill Abbey Crafts and Gardens too).

Shop, sightsee and club the night away in Bournemouth, or stick to its sandy stretches for sunbathing, surfing among the artificial reef and windsurfing; on land, canter about the countryside on horseback or zip around the 50 or so exhibits at the Bournemouth Aviation Museum. A bangingly good nearby attraction is the Ringwood Raceway, with banger, stock car racing and crackingly good crashes.

Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury, Winchester and the Jurassic coast are 20–30 minutes’ drive away coastwards and inland for a mammoth amount of things to see and do to suit all tastes: miles of award-winning beaches, sea fishing, fossil walks, cathedrals and National Trust houses and gardens.

Must see

  • Adventure Wonderland (3.8 miles)
  • The Bournemouth Balloon (7.5 miles)
  • Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum (7.7 miles)
