General

  • Small family-run farm deep in Hardy country
  • Less than ten miles from the Jurassic Coast
  • Firepits for hire: wood supplied

If you're a Thomas Hardy fan, you'll know about Dorchester: it was where the Tess dude lived and was his inspiration for the town of Casterbridge. And if you're taking the trail, settle down afterwards in a Cool Haven bell tent at Thorncombe Farm – it might be the perfect setting to reread Tess...?

Thorncombe is a small family-run livestock farm in the heart of Dorset, near the hamlet of Bockhampton where Thomas Hardy was born, and two miles from the county town of Dorchester. Weymouth, Durdle Door, Chesil Beach and the Jurassic Coast are less than ten miles away.

The five-metre bell tents here have been set up for those who want a bit less hassle on hol and who don't want to be faffed with putting up and taking down tents. They come unfurnished and have a separate dining tent area with a dining table and bench seats.

For eats, try Yalbury Cottage Restaurant or Pine Lodge Farm, both in Bockhampton, the Wise Man pub in West Stafford or the Blue Vinny at Puddletown.

The Thorncombe team supplies firepits, wood and charcoal – have The Mayor of Casterbridge along with marshmallows, maybe...?

Had a very good two night stay - would go back again. 16/08/2017

Small site but not crowded/cramped, with good shower and toilet facilities, and friendly hosts. Tents for hire were large and spacious, with a useful covered picnic table to use and fire pits to hire. Peaceful location (with some farm animal noises).

    Disliked:

Bell tent a bit tired and worn but certainly acceptable. Need a car to get to local pub but then nice to be slightly off the beaten track.

Clean, basic site ideal for our quick stop over. 15/08/2017

Easy to find. The tent was at the far end of the field from the rest of the tents, which was great for us as we like peace and quiet. Good, level pitch and a large tent for 5 of us. Liked the table and awning. Nice outlook across the fields, with livestock. The site was spacious and really quiet with none of the hook-ups in use during our stay. Air beds were booked ahead and ready for use when we arrived. Perfect for our overnight stop on the way back home from a family celebration. Toilet facility was clean. Did not make use of showers as we had an early start. Excellent location for Dorchester and surrounding area.

    Disliked:

Unless I didn't find it, provision of bins for ordinary rubbish was limited and almost overflowing in contrast to recycling bins (good strategy to promote recycling though). Washing up area and toilets are small for the capacity of the site. Some road noise from A35 evident (on a still calm night).

good value in a lovely setting, friendly owners, 11/08/2017

lovely place to stay - good value tent with added bonus of under cover eating area. Great outdoor place for kids to play cricket, run around etc and added bonus of looking out onto fields with animals.
Toilets were good standard for camping - what you'd expect and showers were good - hot water for six minutes - can't get much better.
The fire pit was great - used as a barbecue and a fire - would be great if they provided something to stop the ashes going on the grass. We didn't think but second night used an old disposable barbecue we found by the bin!
All in all we had two great nights camping at Thorncombe Farm. Lovely part of England, good value and would go back for sure

Quiet site, small. Annoying having to buy a card to use the shower. 28/06/2017

Quite peaceful location on a small farm. Grass was cut very neatly. Handy to have tent already erected.

    Disliked:

Was not made aware of having to buy cards to use the shower, despite meeting both owners upon arrival. This meant we had to go without a shower on our first morning as the owners were not around. Shower was good once card used!!!

Local attractions

The open woods of Thorncombe and Puddleton are next to Thorncombe Farm with miles of trails for walking, cycling and horse riding.

Zorbing is available for the more energetic at the neighbouring farm – ask the Thorncombe team for details – and fishing, sailing and golf are all available locally too.

Dorchester is two miles away and well worth at least a day to browse its museums – the Dinosaur Museum is a definite must and we'd also suggest Dorset County Museum, the Tutankhamun Exhibition, and Thomas Hardy's townhouse Max Gate. Plenty of pubs, shops and cafés are in town as well.

Weymouth and the Jurassic Coast is a short drive from the farm: go for the long sandy beach, marina and harbour at Weymouth, the castle at Portland and the famed Chesil Beach stretching for about 18 miles to the west towards Lyme Regis.

Other nearby Dorset days out could be had at Bovington Tank Museum, the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, Maiden Castle and Abbotsbury Gardens and its swannery.

Must see
