General

  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities and free wifi

Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the leash.

We also rather fancy the ten-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale…

Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast.

It has miles of local walks snaking its surroundings and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team.

The farm has modern facilities including a shower and loo block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Fantastic camp site, the facilities are amazing- clean hot showers, indoor washing up area, washing machine, dishwasher. The children enjoyed playing on the ropes swings. Free fire pits. Electric hook ups on one side and tent pitches on the other. the owners are also very nice.

    Disliked:

There were no separate toilets to the shower rooms so in the morning it did get a little busy which caused a little issue when you were bursting.
The resident ducks are a little persistent and try to get in the your tent- this caused much laughter but also was a little annoying after a while.

Clive the owner was very helpful and friendly.
Lovely quiet location free to roam around the farm.

The pitches were marked up with your booking name, level and of good size.
The electric hookup was a proper 16 amp supply.

Good clean facilities, showers and toilets.
Washing machine, tumble drier and fridge freezer as well as washing up area.

Nice Pub reasonably priced and farm shop nearby with basic provisions, 10 minutes walk away.

    Disliked:

We stayed on the glorious August bank holiday 2017 so the site was pretty full,
so there was a small queue for the showers at times but nothing serious

Beautiful setting - rolling sheep filled hills, plenty of scenic walks and a night time of full starry skies.

All very well presented and perfectly run. Clive gave us a warm welcome, a friendly, hard working chap whom made the stay even better.

The Gabriel Oak Sheppard's hut had everything we needed, was comfortable, warm and well built.

The local pub is brilliant - The Fox - has well priced and tasty food (we went for a carvery) and a good selection of ales.

would recommend Moonfleet Farm to anyone!

Great location with a stunning view from our hut and nice walks around the farm, good shower facilities, and a really welcoming owner who went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable after I made a special request in advance. We wanted a peaceful break away from the city and couldn't have asked for more. Visited the Jurassic coast during our stay, which was about a 30 minute drive from the farm.

The hut we stayed in (Mistover) had a lot of privacy and was well kitted out, with fire pit and firewood provided too. The doors and shutters open out to look over the rolling countryside and the animals on the farm. It did get a little windy and rainy on one evening, but we barely noticed it as the hut was so cosy to sleep in.

No doubt we'd happily return here for a longer stay.

Higher Ansty is approximately 12 miles north east of Dorchester.

From the south
Take the A35 Dorchester exit (Northbrook exit) and follow signs towards the Piddlehinton and Cheselbourne, then take the Cheselbourne turning.
Follow the road through Cheselbourne, Melcombe Bingham then into Ansty.
You' will pass the Fox Inn on your right. After about 500 yards turn left in front of a converted chapel. Follow the road into Higher Ansty. You'll see Moonfleet Farm on the left, set back from the road (last house in the village).

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf.

A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.)

Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way.

Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.
