General

  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities, fishing ponds and campfires allowed

Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the lead.

You might also rather fancy the 10-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale…

Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast. It has miles of local walks snaking its surroundings, and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team.

The farm has modern amenitiess including a shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

the peace and quiet of the site and the wonderful views. Superb walking from the campsite. The facilities are clean and well presented.

    Disliked:

The only downside for me, and this is personal to me but could be of use to other dog owners who like me have a dog that isn't good with other dogs, is that the farm dogs did roam through the campsite unaccompanied by a human; although I did [foolishly] park up at the end near the stables and nearest the farm, so may not have been so much of a problem had I gone down the other end of the site. As I say, if your dog is dog friendly not a problem, but sadly mine is not. The farm dogs themselves were all lovely and friendly to all.

Lovely peaceful and rural (a real farm!) location. The owners are there but 'hands off' in a good way. No warden patrolling! As the owner said himself 'you are here to relax!'. Plenty of space for the kids to roam safely!

Beautiful surroundings and a great place to walk around. All the facilities were clean and the pitches maintained. Nice to have the animals near by as my little boy loves them, epically the two ducks that likes to sit with us each day. There where some swings also for the kids to play on.

The man that owns the farm was very friendly and laid back. Always happy to help. Also the pitches are nice and big.

Not a far drive from monkey world, durdle door or Ludlow cove.

Highly recommended this place. For both families and couples.

    Disliked:

Not much near by so either bring stuff with you or drive into town. The scary geese but we managed to bribe them with bread.

Directions

Higher Ansty is approximately 12 miles north east of Dorchester.

From the south
Take the A35 Dorchester exit (Northbrook exit) and follow signs towards the Piddlehinton and Cheselbourne, then take the Cheselbourne turning.
Follow the road through Cheselbourne, Melcombe Bingham then into Ansty.
You' will pass the Fox Inn on your right. After about 500 yards turn left in front of a converted chapel. Follow the road into Higher Ansty. You'll see Moonfleet Farm on the left, set back from the road (last house in the village).

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf.

A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.)

Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way.

Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.
