Higher Lewell Farmhouse: View from the bell tents towards our house, showing plenty of space for children to play

General

  • Peaceful paddock surrounded by fields on the edge of a quiet village
  • Central to the Jurassic Coast and 15 minutes' drive from the sea
  • Lots of space for kids to play; three-minute walk to the local pub

A pretty paddock surrounded by fields on the edge of a village is the name of the game here: behind a greystone farmhouse in Dorset, the bell tents at Higher Lewell Farmhouse are settled comfortably away from the action.

The site is central to the Jurassic Coast's spectacular seas and cliffs, 20 minutes from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door and under 40 minutes from Burton Bradstock, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Chesil beach, Studland, Sandbanks, Swanage and Kimmeridge. It's also 20 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum.

The exceptionally roomy field at Higher Lewell has plenty of parking space, heaps of room for kids to play in (using some of the treats in the site's box full of toys) and more than enough space for your outdoor furniture, barbecue and whatever else you decide to bring to furnish your new home.

In the field close to the pitches is a camping kitchen with a fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle and charging points for phones; crockery and cutlery are provided, along with tea, coffee and sugar. Two toilets and two showers (both plumbed into the mains) are up here too.

Friendly dogs are more than welcome, but the site owners require that visiting dogs are completely comfortable and happy with cats, chickens and other people and dogs.

If you're partial to a pint or want to know where you can relieve yourself of barbecue duties and tuck into some tasty pub grub, then you're in luck: Higher Lewell is a very handy three-minute walk from its nearest local inn, where you can enjoy a tipple or two alongside good meals, all while taking in some smashing sunset views out on the terrace. The pub can cook you breakfast if you want to tuck in before a day of Dorset sightseeing.

Slightly further afield, there are also heaps of good eats to be had around central Dorchester, with lots of popular big eateries around Brewery Square and takeaways aplenty. Several more restaurants and pubs are at Weymouth harbour, 15 minutes' drive away, and several more pubs serving food are within a 15-minute drive at most.

We had such a great time! The facilities are just like described, the tents are very cosy and it was particularly useful to have access to a fridge. All the kids from the different tents ended up playing together, it was great. We saw deers and rabbits in the field next to the camping. We look forward to our next visit!

EVERYTHING! This is a true glamping experience. The tents are spacious, the bed comfortable. We travelled with our small dog and 6yo. We had plenty of space and our pup was in his crate too! You could comfortably fit an additional 3 single test beds/mattresses in the tent.
The shared facilities were second to none, warm powerful shower, clean toilets, small kitchenette with fridge freezer, kettle, microwave and charging points for phones. There was soap, toilet roll, washing up liquid and hand sanitiser.
There are garden games for the children- and these were a huge hit!
The surrounding farm life, scenery and wildlife (my husband saw 2 deer in the neighbouring field!) was simply stunning.
The New Inn just a stones throw down the road delivered great food with a friendly service.
Durdle door is a 15 min drive up the road, Lyme Regis about 40 mins, and Weymouth about 20 mins away - so the site couldn’t be in a better location!
We 100% recommend Higher Lewell Farmhouse bell tents, and are already planning our visit back, this time- with our extended family!!!

Stayed with family (children age 7 and 11) and friends (child aged 12, and a dog). What a great find. Really glad we stayed here. The tents are comfortable, new and well-pitched. Washing facilities clean and in good order. Fantastic location for beach, walks, activities and pub. Owners friendly and helpful. Everything looked friendly and welcoming. Perfect halfway house between glamping and wild camping.
