General

  • Peaceful car-free site on an organic farm in the Blackmore Vale
  • Within an hour of Jurassic Coast beaches, Stonehenge and Longleat
  • Farm produce sold on site; 10 minutes from fishing and indoor pool

Hankering for the heaths, and desperate for the downs? Have a look at Haddon Copse Farm in Dorset, a small and peaceful site with views across Blackmore Vale.

Although quietly rural, this scenic site is well set: a 10-minute drive from shops, pubs and supermarkets in the small town of Sturminster Newton, and at the centre of an area of castles and ancient monuments, clifftop heaths and secluded beaches. Indoor heated pool antics and coarse fishing on the lakes are at The Victorian Barn, 10 minutes' drive away.

Haddon Copse is part of a working organic farm and the shop sells home-reared chicken, lamb and pork, as well as eggs, milk, butter and locally baked bread. You'll have your own private firepit whichever accommodation option you go for here... there's dinner (and breakfast, and second breakfast) easily sorted...

Nor will you need to worry about cars as parking is off-site here, meaning bags of safe space for everyone to stretch out and run about, savouring the fresh air and the views over the Dorset downs. This is a seriously pretty spot to settle down in overall: even the toilets and shower are tastefully surrounded by a newly planted orchard.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Stayed for the weekend in the retreat hut which was cosy, light and comfortable - despite a storm raging outside. Lovely touches by Mark and Tom who are attentive and discrete including milk, bread, butter and eggs and a great choic e of books. Had time to read and listen to books, knit, walk, think and stare into space. Was particularly lucky to have the farm to myself. Arrived tearful and anxious and left relaxed and happy. Will come again and strongly recommend to anyone who needs to recharge their batteries.

A fabulous rural getaway in beautiful Dorset 28/08/2018

We have just returned from yet another fantastic weekend at Haddon Copse Farm - for the fourth time in as many years! We adore this campsite for its quiet and low-key atmosphere, its friendly owners, and its gorgeous location in rural Dorset.

There are two well-appointed bathrooms (shared by a mere handful of tents, so there's rarely a queue), two clean sinks in which to do washing up, and a freezer to pop your ice bricks into - great if you're staying for more than a few days.

The bell tents are lovely, with comfortable mattresses provided and their own fire pits - with logs and kindling available to buy. The owners run a fabulous award-winning organic farm too, and offer their own sausages, chicken, eggs and more to buy - with bread from a local baker too.

We travel a lot, to all kinds of places, but this is the one place that we return to year after year - and I think that speaks for itself.

Thankyou both once again for a wonderful stay - see you next year!

This was our second visit and it was just as lovely as the first. The site is small and pitches are large and set well apart. The no car policy works well and the facilities were spotless. It’s so lovely to be able to sit around a fire in the evening and look at the stars and hear pretty much nothing. We will definitely be back next year.

    Disliked:

Slight queue for toilets when the site was full, but no more than 10 minutes and this is the only negative.

Local attractions

For further cracking countryside views, take a short hike up Hambledon Hill (20 minutes) and have a ramble round the remains of the Iron Age fort.

If it’s castles you’re craving, Sherborne (25 minutes) has two: one 12th-century ruin and one lavish Tudor pile where Sir Walter Raleigh spent his retirement (by a lake where walks and fishing remain the pastimes of choice these days too). Further off, Corfe and Lulworth castles (both 50 minutes) make a contrasting pair of medieval ruins and 17th-century showmanship, and it’s an hour’s drive to ancient and spectacular Stonehenge.

Beach days? Sample the surfing action and cliff kayaking at Lulworth Cove (50 minutes), or go for peace and seclusion at Winspit Sands, where there's a walking path from Worth Matravers (an hour from the site).

Also an hour away, Kimmeridge beach and the surrounding Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve are top spots for rockpooling, and if you want to take your wildlife wanders deeper, there are underwater nature trails for snorkellers and divers. Or hit the heaths: purple heather-covered Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve is home to all six native British reptile species, as well as nightjars and egrets.

For wildlife on a bigger scale, meet the hairy charmers at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, or motor your way through the lions, tigers and elephants of Longleat Safari Park (35 and 50 minutes).

  • Hardy's Birthplace (11.5 miles)
