  • Peaceful car-free site on an organic farm in the Blackmore Vale
  • Within an hour of Jurassic Coast beaches, Stonehenge and Longleat
  • Farm produce sold on site; private firepits for cooking meals
Looking for a peaceful, uncrowded site to get away to for a few days? Then, Haddon Copse Farm is the place for you. Set in the centre of Dorset's stunning Blackmore Vale, the site is part of a 40-acre regenerative farm. Although quietly rural, this scenic site is well set: a 10-minute drive from shops, pubs and supermarkets in the small town of Sturminster Newton, and at the centre of an area of castles and ancient monuments, clifftop heaths and secluded beaches. As it's based on the working organic farm, Haddon Copse Farm sells home-reared, award-winning chicken, lamb and pork, as well as eggs, milk, butter and locally baked bread. You'll have your own private firepit whichever accommodation option you go for here… so there's dinner (and breakfast, and second breakfast) easily sorted... Nor will you need to worry about cars as parking is off-site here, meaning bags of safe space for everyone to stretch out and run about, savouring the fresh air and the views over the Dorset downs. This is a seriously pretty spot to settle down in overall: even the toilets and shower are tastefully surrounded by a newly planted orchard.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Peace and quiet, space, and the whole concept really: simple facilities were fine and everything seemed to work nicely. Farm eggs v tasty. Thanks for a lovely stay. Pub a longish walk but v nice. “Proper” longish track to site challenging for my limited slow speed motorcycle skills but no dramas.

Bell tent

Liked: This is a beautiful site. The scenery is amazing and the small number of tents and pitches create a peaceful, private enclave, with the feeling of really being away from it all. Everything about this site is relaxed and calm and Tom who owns the site is lovely and friendly. The showers and toilets are great, clean and fully functional as are the washing up facilities however they are tucked away in a neighbouring orchard so as not to impact on the overall ambience of the site. Fire pits and barbecue grates are provided, as are logs and coal for the fire. You can also order fresh bread, bacon, butter and eggs which are delivered to your tent in the morning. Overall I can’t rate this site highly enough, if you are looking for a glamping experience which is quiet, peaceful and tranquil then this is your place.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely lovely small campsite, with brilliant facilities and lovely pitches, all of a decent size and far enough away from each other, etc. A very easy check in process and the host was lovely. Would definitely recommend and would go again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Haddon Copse was intimate, extremely roomy with great facilities and an idyllic view. It was very eco with solar heated showers and recycling. There was a communal freezer and firewood to buy for the fire pit that each tent had. Friendly host and lots to do in the area too.

Disliked: A bit noisy with the farm geese but a minor gripe really.

Cabin (adults only)

Liked: Fantastic spot, the Retreat Hut is just that - a perfect little retreat. Luxurious pod which is great for a short stay. The bathroom facilities were also great. There is an emphasis on sustainability when it comes to waste recycling and water usage which we liked.

Disliked: No dislikes.

Local attractions

For further cracking countryside views, take a short hike up Hambledon Hill (20 minutes's drive) and have a ramble round the remains of the Iron Age fort. If it’s castles you’re craving, Sherborne (25 minutes) has two: one 12th-century ruin and one lavish Tudor pile where Sir Walter Raleigh spent his retirement (by a lake where walks and fishing remain the pastimes of choice these days too). Further off, Corfe and Lulworth castles (both 50 minutes) make a contrasting pair of medieval ruins and 17th-century showmanship, and it’s an hour’s drive to ancient and spectacular Stonehenge. Beach days? Sample the surfing action and cliff kayaking at Lulworth Cove (50 minutes), or go for peace and seclusion at Winspit Sands, where there's a walking path from Worth Matravers (an hour from the site). Also an hour away, Kimmeridge beach and the surrounding Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve are top spots for rockpooling, and if you want to take your wildlife wanders deeper, there are underwater nature trails for snorkellers and divers. Or hit the heaths: purple heather-covered Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve is home to all six native British reptile species, as well as nightjars and egrets. For wildlife on a bigger scale, meet the hairy charmers at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, or motor your way through the lions, tigers and elephants of Longleat Safari Park (35 and 50 minutes).
