Giants Head Caravan and Camping Park: Grassy area for tents

General

  • Rural Dorset site eight miles from Dorchester and 16 from the coast
  • Treasure trails and countryside walks just steps away
  • Just over a mile from pubs, a tearoom and a shop in Cerne Abbas

Warning! A trip to ancient Cerne Abbas may leave you with a mammoth yearning never to leave: the Dorset village has been described as the ‘Britain’s most desirable village’ to live among the UK’s scenic many. It’s eight miles from Dorchester, within day-tripping distance of the Jurassic Coast and, most famously, is where the 180ft Cerne Abbas Giant doth dwell high up on the hillside. (Yes, the naughty giant with no sense of shyness.)

Around a 40-minute stroll from Cerne Abbas is the mightily convenient Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park, a family- and dog-friendly site over three and a half acres with grassy pitches, immense views over the Dorset countryside and thumping good access to the best of Dorset.

Countryside walks, as well as treasure trails, literally start within steps of the pitches: Giants Head has several planned walks straight from the park, and runs Treasure Trails Dorset directly from it so intrepid guests can pick up one or two of the 50+ trail packs and take off on the hunt for hidden gems. Sounds like a towering amount of fun…

As befits its location, everything at Giants Head is kept nicely natural – think mature trees, hedgerows and trim lawns; and the level or gently sloping pitches are variously secluded, shady or open (there’s also a special tail-wagging area for campers with canines). All parts of the park are well-drained and a hard road leads to pitches.

Amenities include showers, hand basins, laundry and washing-up areas; the park doesn’t have a shop, but a well-stocked village store, a tearoom and three pubs are in Cerne Abbas, a mile and a quarter away.

The host Caroline was absolutely amazing, there was literally nothing she wouldn't do within her power to make your stay easier.
The site was clean and the facilities were very well maintained.
The surrounding area was absolutely stunning and we very much enjoyed going to some local attractions.

    Disliked:

It is on a main road which could sometimes get a little noisy (obviously not the sites fault).
The site was very busy when we arrived and it felt a little cramped to begin with (and not what we have been used to before) but this feeling quickly subsided.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind words.

I am pleased you all had a relaxing time with us even though it was half term with lots of children playing and running around enjoying themselves.

I am sorry I didn't come and have that drink with you on the last night but I promise I will when you are here next time. :)

Good for walking, access to local villages and not to far from the sea.

    Disliked:

This campsite is ok if you're not planning on sleeping before midnight! 3 nights stay and every night was music and shouting till late.
We had been out all day and simply wanted to rest and sleep, but this wasn't possible as many groups were up late making alot of noise. Which is fine if your not ready for bed early . But lieing waiting for the parties to stop, ultimately became exhausting. Child couldn't sleep and was crying with frustration from lack of sleep.

From the manager...

I am sorry our site was not suitable for you, but we can't please everyone all the time.

There were NO parties or loud music on site just families with children having a nice time, after being shut in for many months, I was not going to stop them having fun because someone wanted to go to bed early. Maybe if you had let your son out to play with all the other children he would not have cried.

I am surprised you couldn't sleep on your final night as there were only four caravans/tents left on site, all older retired guests. I was actually on site that night with some regular guests so I know there were no parties or noise that night.

If this was such a major problem why did you not contact me while you were on site, rather than complaining here. You managed to find me when someone parked their car in 'your' parking spot.

I hope you find somewhere more suited to your needs in the future.

Lovely friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, clean facilities. Great for kids - including our own- who were roaming around having a lovely noisy time.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the fun didn’t stop at 9 or even 10pm and there were lots of loud screaming young kids running around playing water fights or football until very late every night. Lots of noise in general until late on. Struggled to get out 9 year old to settle at 10pm because of this. Not great for a chilled grown up evening in the awning.

From the manager...

Our site is great for kids, they all seem happy to play together, like you said 'having a lovely noisy time', like children do.

I was on site each evening and on one evening I did stop some children being a little too noisy after 10.00pm, I also stopped them throwing water bombs around because of all the bombs left around the site.

I agree, not great for a chilled grown up evening, it was half term with lots of excited children on site, probably there first holiday since lock down. It is exceptionally quite this week with no children on site.

From the manager...

I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us, we are in an ideal position for all the local sites and we do have some great walks from the site.

Some parts of the site are on a slope but these are usually kept for the children to play ball games. Some late bookings for tents are around the edge of this sloping area.

We enjoyed our stay - Caroline (the owner) was very well organised.
We had enough space and the toilets and showers were clean

    Disliked:

We always tow a car and have never been charged anywhere for doing so, yet we were charged £30 for 6 nights for the car....not sure if caravans get charged more than motorhomes, for having a car and caravan!!

From the manager...

I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us, I may look a bit disorganised but I do know where everyone is, how much space they need and what they like.

We do try and keep out toilet and showers clean all the time, was not difficult at all this week as everyone was really clean and tidy. :)

I am sure most site do charge for extra vehicles, I think it is fair that a two man tent with a car should not pay the same as a large motorvan with trailer and car. I just want to be fair to everyone so they pay for what they bring. The more space needed the higher the price, I know my prices are quite a lot less than some of the larger sites. I hope that makes sense.

I did panic a bit when I saw you come through the site entrance, that I hadn't saved enough space for you. I am glad you were ok.

I look forward to seeing you again in the future.

From the manager...

So pleased you liked the location, it is beautiful here.

Some parts of the site are on a slope but these are mostly kept for all the children to play. When the site is busy some tents are on a slight slope.

The electric in the showers are movement sensitive so if you keep moving the lights will stay on, they will only go out if you stand still.

Our toilet block is fairly old but we do keep it spotlessly clean, some of the toilets are not that big.

Hope to see you again soon.

Impeccably clean; toilets were basic but spotless and the new shower block was excellent. Caroline was friendly, welcoming and approachable for help or just a chat. The location is great for heading out sightseeing, close to Dorchester for supplies but BRING SENSIBLE SHOES! if walking to Cerne Abbas village. A beautiful stroll across fields.but super steep heading down it.

    Disliked:

    That we had to leave

From the manager...

We do try and keep our toilets and showers spotlessly clean, we do keep on top of the cleaning which makes the job a lot easier.

We do try and make everyone feel welcome and relaxed, and are always around to help if needed.

Although we are a little remote, we are in an ideal position for all the local attractions and the wonderful Jurassic Coast.

Flip fops are a definite NO for walking down to Cerne Abbas, it is a little steep.

Really look forward to seeing you again soon.

Local attractions

If you have giggling kids along with you – and even if you don’t – a trip to the well-endowed and world-famed Cerne Abbas Giant is most visitors’ first stop, if only to buy a postcard (it’s been noted that postcards of the Giant are the only images of a naked man that can be sent via the Post Office). The man himself is now tended by the National Trust, which has a waymarked circular trail around the site from Cerne Abbas village.

Dorchester is an excellent early stop for urbanites and heritage-heads: here you’ll find history-dedicated days out as varied as the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre; take the Durnovaria Town Walk for an outdoorsy overview of the city’s main sights.

Thomas Hardy’s Cottage is at Dorchester too and the literary can book into their schedule the Thomas Hardy Trail, a six-mile circular walk within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Elsewhere around the area, take the enormous amount of things to see and do in your stride: from castles to dinosaurs, theme parks to heritage railways and historic houses to tank museums, the coast to countryside have whopping opps for days out (and in; dash to Dorchester’s West Dorset Leisure Centre on a rainy day when the kids need to let off steam).

Historic houses and gardens like Kingston Lacy, Athelhampton House and Minterne House and Gardens should suit the sedately inclined, while the less sedate (hello kids) will no doubt prefer chattering at the likes of Monkey World in Wareham, Adventure Wonderland at Christchurch or Sea Life near Weymouth. Both sorts should have a tanking good time at Bovington’s Tank Museum, the second biggest collection of armoured vehicles on the planet.

Head for the coast, half an hour's drive away, to fossil hunt or take a guided fossil tour at Lyme Regis or Charmouth; soak up sun and sights at seaside towns such as Weymouth, Swanage and Christchurch; float on a boat to the Channel Islands or potter around glorious Poole Harbour and epically beaut Brownsea Island, also managed by the National Trust.

The award-winning Swanage Railway is a gently relaxed way to see some of the sights of Dorset (including Famous Five inspiration Corfe Castle) and holds regular events including driving experiences and special days for children.
