Pilsdon View Camping: Five-metre yurt

General

  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with wildflower meadow, tyre swing and garden toys

Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got four acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…)

That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores.

The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to a wildflower meadow and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings).

Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field.

Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, 31/08/2021.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Lovely welcoming hosts, very clean facilities and the best showers!21/07/2021

Lovely warm welcoming hosts on arrival, and the option of firecamps provided by the owners. Owners always nearby if any problems, and very impressed by Harvey's unicycling and fire juggling skills!
Clean facilities, and excellent showers with rain type shower heads - the best we've ever experienced camping, very impressed. Lovely and rural, and an excelent spot for stargazing.
Socially distanced pitch spaces allocated so you don't end up with other campers too close.
Great for families - lots of children and there is a playground on site, and also a tree tyre swing.

    Disliked:

Excellent for family campers, but not as much for people who want quiet stays as it did get quite noisy during the weekend (but was perfectly fine on weekdays!)

Lovely campsite in a very rural setting with great views of Pilsden Pen. Was very quiet when I stayed with lots of choice for pitches. The facilities are very nicely put together with plenty of showers / toilet facilities as well as washing up stations. The owners could not have been more hospitable on arrival and through my short stay. Basic hot food is offered in the evening (pizza / baked potato) at very reasonable prices and they also provide fire pits made from old washing up machine drums and firewood at £5 a bag.

    Disliked:

Country road next to site was surprisingly busy with farm traffic.

The hosts were very good and nothing was too much trouble. Ample space for each pitch. Spotless showers, toilets and washing up facilities.

    Disliked:

It should be pointed out that this site is down a very narrow, very busy, country track. I had to pull in to very precarious areas to let lorries and large combine harvesters pass 15 times in one journey. I only had a T5 so heaven help anything larger. This would deter a number of campers.

Also, it is a family site and there was a huge party of couples with children who were allowed to run ferrel…. Screaming and being absolute horrors to all campers. This should have been quelled!! Great to see children enjoying themselves but not to the detriment of all other campers.

From the manager...

We are very pleased that you found us helpful. Barry and Harvey helped you move to a more suitable pitch and erected your windbreak, and Harvey offered to help you refilling your van with fresh water. The Broadoak to Marshwood road, where we are sited, is a fully tarmacked road, mostly wide enough for two vehicles and where it is narrow there are ample passing places. Several campsites along this road accept caravans and larger motor homes so access is not normally considered inadequate. We have never had a complaint before about this.
When this guest arrived she expressed concern about possible noise from children. We explained that several families were booked in over the weekend and there would be the sounds of children playing. We suggested that if this was a problem we would offer a full refund and try to find a place on a nearby adults only site which she might prefer. She declined this offer, and we did our best to make her stay comfortable. We do manage noise on the site such that we don’t have amplified music and if children are still noisy after dark we will have a quiet word with the parents.

  • Amaryllis yurt
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

We stayed in Amaryllis yurt 🛖 this is the first time for us! The site is dog friendly
The owners Terry and April couldn’t have been more helpful from the time of arrival to our departure😊
All staff working must be hand picked for there helpfulness, Kindness, politeness Barry and Harvey helped out with removing the yurt top as the weather was so hot!
There are not many places you can go these days and find “ nothing is too much trouble attitude” but at Pilsdon View that’s exactly what you get!
Although it’s back to basics, no electricity, no WiFi it’s just so nice being able to do the things we used to do before technology arrived!
We all lead such busy lives these days, going back to basics was a really nice way of relaxing and taking a total break from a screen of some sort!
The Yurt is so cosy, and the double bed is so comfortable, tea light lanterns are plenty, but if you like more light, a torch would be good to bring
Double gas burner stove, with all bits you will need
Tractor comes round early evening with dry wood for the fire pit (no charge if staying in amaryllis yurt)
There is a nice dog walk field so you can let the fur babies off the lead, otherwise dogs must be on leads.
We had a few latte’s and teas from the little place on site very nice!
Jacket potatoes and Pizza also available on selected nights, definitely recommend the Pizza
“Beautiful” choice of toppings we chose three
    All for £9 Yummy 🤤

Showers beautifully hot and spotless as are the toilets and pot washing facilities

Would love to return again next year
Highly recommend, you will not be disappointed, (if it’s loud music and drinking to all hours then this is not for you!)

Thank you all for your hospitality
Hope to see you soon xx

From the manager...

Many thanks for your lovely comprehensive review. We normally say a maximum of three dogs, but you contacted me in advance to ask if you could bring dog no 4. A beautiful rescue sausage dog. You took great care of your furry friends and were model guests. I hope you will return. Your suggestion of a torch for the yurt is a good one, and becomes more important as the year goes on.
Our food wagon is a new venture for this year. The pizzas are provided by my sister. They are handmade and stonebaked. We are delighted you enjoyed the food and drinks on offer.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself.

Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum).

In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour.

Away from the coast, Axe Valley Wildlife Park and Mapperton House and Gardens are both within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (4.8 miles)
