General

  • Part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • 150 metres from a shingle beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Traverse down to Dorset and Golden Top, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – set in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Pitches overlook the sea or the coastal hills, and amenities at the park are excellent overall – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room, a gym and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Would possibly have to think twice before returning. 15/04/2018

  • Liked:

The beautiful area, the wonderful views and the closeness to the beach and pub.
The excellent walks over the surrounding area enjoyed by myself and my dog.
The convenience of being on a serviced pitch in respect of constant water supply and drainage without the need to keep refilling my aqua roll and emptying my waste master.
The new reception area and the friendliness of staff on the site.

    Disliked:

The fact that I could not book a specific serviced pitch in advance so that when I arrived the only serviced pitch available was down a slope at the far end of the access road and very difficult to manoeuvre into with my caravan ( the reason this was the only pitch left I assume)
The pitch was adjacent to the children’s playground and quite noisy. Parents overseeing their children from a distance often stood immediately outside my caravan window and made me feel as though I was in a goldfish bowl at times. I had decided to get away in my caravan specifically because of noisy children in adjacent gardens during the Easter holiday - out of the frying pan etc. ( you will by now have realised I hate noisy kids). Would not have gone to this site had I known I would end up next to a play area.
The weather was particularly wet most days and being at the bottom of the slope the water ran down and pooled in the gravel area inside/under my awning such that my carpet was floating. The area became so wet my awning pegs all came adrift in the night and I ended up at 2am one morning taking the awning down before it was badly damaged, in the light of my car headlamps ( I realise this was the fault of the weather and the pitch situation and not the site people)
The site shop seemed very sparsely stocked - fancied bacon one morning for breakfast and there was none to be had - someone had beaten me to the last packet. The shop before alterations seemed to stock much more in the way of food stuffs.
The amount of site redevelopment taking place - seems to have lost much of its old magic. More about making money rather than providing pleasure.
Some of the recently added camping pods looked a bit run down already and would have benefitted from a coat of paint over the winter period.
The only fine days were spoilt by the noise of grass strimmers close by my caravan which went on for hours.
Road works were taking place in the middle of Chideock which meant if you went anywhere in you car you were subjected to an hour long wait in a queue in order to reaccess the site. I do think the site could have warned of this when taking bookings.

Pretty much everything about the stay really. The booking in process was straightforward. The site is clean and nicely laid out and even being a few rows back we still had a view of the sea. The toilet area is clean and well laid out. Our kids loved it, as they were able to use their scooters safely on a loop where we could see them. Great site, thanks for a really good stay.

    Disliked:

The approach road is a bit narrow and if it was a lot busier it might be a bit interesting. This isn't a dislike really, but just an observation. There isn't much that could be done about it anyway!!

From the manager...

Thank you for your 10/10 review. We're pleased to hear your whole family enjoyed their stay at Golden Cap. We hope to see you and your family at Golden Cap in the future.

    Disliked:

Quite noisy during the day with groundsmen driving around the site for most of the day. Hardstanding pitch was too small for 7M motorhome and not level.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback we do apologise that the groundsmen driving around disturbed you. We had a lot of ground work to be taken care of after the recent severe weather. We are so pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay.

Just about everything. The site is very clean and tidy. At the time if year we were there (October) it was quiet and peaceful. Great facilities and the showers/toilets were immaculate. There is a small shop inside the reception. Great for going up to Golden Cap. Will visit again. The Anchor Inn is a 5 minute walk. But the choice of food is somewhat pretentious and quite expensive for a pub.

    Disliked:

The cost of Wi-Fi at the resort. It is very expensive. Fortunately we had 4G (with EE) in most locations so did not need to purchase.

Leave the M5 at Junction 25 and follow the signs for Yeovil. From Yeovil follow the signs to Dorchester.

From the east
From the M3 take the M27 to Ringwood and on to Dorchester.

From the west
From Honiton, take the A35 towards Lyme Regis and Bridport.

Once on the A35, follow it to Chideock. In the village turn off opposite the church into Duck Street signposted for Seatown. Follow this road down to the sea and the park entrance is on the left hand side just before the beach. Please note that this is a narrow lane.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pit stop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country.

A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips, seafood cafés and locally caught fish to go with your chips, or getting active with paragliding, climbing, golf or diving.

The park is two miles from the town of Bridport with its famous market introduced in the 16th century by Good Queen Bess – go along on Wednesdays or Saturdays for bargains in clothes, antiques and local produce and make that the kickstart of a shopping trip also covering Dorchester, Sherborne and Beaminster.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, see the inhabitants at Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park or get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park.

After a trip to one (or more) of these, they might not moan too much when you go to one of the more grownup West Dorset attractions: try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum, before relenting and taking the sprogs to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.
