General

  • Part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • 150 metres from a shingle beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Traverse down to Dorset and Golden Top, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – set in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Pitches overlook the sea or the coastal hills, and amenities at the park are excellent overall – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Non allocated pitches meant when we arrived later than expected Friday night families had taken over multiple pitches and were not moving until warden came to ensure pitches were not being blocked. It was frustrating as we circled three times before we found a spot we could squeeze into avoiding family ball games taking part across numerous pitches within the purple allocated area. The family who shared a pitch up with unwillingly moved some of their items from the free pitch in order for us to pitch up. Its a great pitch and area. Shame people felt entitled to more than they paid for.

A very clean well managed site. Other guests respectful, no late night noise!
So lovely to walk a short distance to the beach. Having The Anchor pub right by the beach a bonus, excellent choice of perfectly cooked food including vegan options.
Staff on site helpful and caring.
WiFi had a fault for 4 days and since I paid £10 for the week for one device was a bit miffed. However the staff apologized and gave me £7 back, which I thought was fair.

Really friendly and efficient welcome at reception.
Able to choose own pitch which was generously sized. Well cared for campsite.
Clean, well maintained toilet block with good showers and bench space to put belongings whilst showering.
Overall site was well run, had good facilities (enjoyed fish & chips from the van on Saturday evening!) and in a fabulous location next to the beach.

    Disliked:

Nothing really - only a minor niggle but the shop had low stocks of milk & bread on the occasions we used it.

From the manager...

Thank you for your 10 out of 10 rating, so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and found everything clean.
The fish and chip van comes every Saturday and although its not part of our park it is very popular.

The secluded nature of the location and the top notch facilities.

    Disliked:

Playground is modern and safe but not as suitable for young children. WiFi costs weren’t worth the hassle. Would be nice to be inclusive in cost.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and the pictures of your recent stay with us. Due to our rural location our wifi does dip in and out of signal and does not have as fast a speed you would have if you were at home. We hope to see you again soon.

A lovely site that we have not used before, we normally only use over 18 camp sites as sharing our peacfullness with other peoples children is not quite what we enjoy and as a teacher and also a mother and grandmother, getting away from the noise is wonderful. Perhaps this site could look at putting a separate area for us " mature teenagers"?

    Disliked:

The level of the pitches is on a slant with loose gravel as a stabiliser fortunately we eventually coped with levelling the caravan but have hours of amusement watching others struggle and just give up.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, its great to hear that overall you enjoyed our park and would visit again.
You might prefer to take one of our hard base pitches rather than gravel next time?
We do cater for all generations as it is a family park.

For this time of the year we couldn't fault it! will plan to return at some point.....even the weather was brilliant. The facilities were very clean and the service hard standing was fine, next time Motorhome wheel levelers would be useful but not absolutely necessary as we lived fine without them. The walking from the site is really good with well posted signs ....even if most of it seemed up hill!

From the north
Leave the M5 at Junction 25 and follow the signs for Yeovil. From Yeovil follow the signs to Dorchester.

From the east
From the M3 take the M27 to Ringwood and on to Dorchester.

From the west
From Honiton, take the A35 towards Lyme Regis and Bridport.

Once on the A35, follow it to Chideock. In the village turn off opposite the church into Duck Street signposted for Seatown. Follow this road down to the sea and the park entrance is on the left hand side just before the beach. Please note that this is a narrow lane.

The nearest bus stop is Chideock Bridge which the X53 and 31 buses stop at.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pit stop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country.

A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips, seafood cafés and locally caught fish to go with your chips, or getting active with paragliding, climbing, golf or diving.

The park is two miles from the town of Bridport with its famous market introduced in the 16th century by Good Queen Bess – go along on Wednesdays or Saturdays for bargains in clothes, antiques and local produce and make that the kickstart of a shopping trip also covering Dorchester, Sherborne and Beaminster.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, see the inhabitants at Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park or get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park.

After a trip to one (or more) of these, they might not moan too much when you go to one of the more grownup West Dorset attractions: try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum, before relenting and taking the sprogs to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.
