General

  • Part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • 150 metres from a shingle beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Traverse down to Dorset and Golden Top, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – set in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Pitches overlook the sea or the coastal hills, and amenities at the park are excellent overall – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room, a gym and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

We found Golden Cap camping site to be absolutely beautiful, the staff were very friendly and kept the site immaculate, and being situated right on the beach and loads of countryside walking we were in our element. We will be booking up for next year and for a lot longer then. Would seriously recomend this site, Dave and Kate from Worcestershire.

Nice location close to beach and Anchor pub.
Nice and pleasant reception staff and on site warden.
    Clean toilets.

    Disliked:

Access lane off A35 is single track and although it has passing places, lots of people use the road to go to the beach and the pub.
Nowhere to park up your caravan when checking in causes problems when more than 1 arrives at the same time.
£4.00 a night for a dog staying in your own caravan/motorhome-rip off!!!
Rude gentleman riding around on buggy(on site cleaner).
Self closing doors to toilet block bang loudly, not good through the night.

  • Liked:

The campsite was well laid out, had a well stocked shop, nice (gluten free!!) pizzas, friendly staff, loos and showers were fine.

    Disliked:

The radio in the loos could be a bit annoying - mostly late at night having local radio blaring at you can be a bit disconcerting - maybe switch to a more chilled out station after 9pm?

Our freezer pack got nicked from the communal freezer (surely a case of mistaken identity).

Slightly too obsessed with strimming - I'd rather the wildlife / flowers got to benefit.

Biggest gripe - is the beach dog friendly or not? In the leaflet we received on arrival it said they're not allowed - but when we visited the beach, having left ours briefly in the van (in the shade, all the windows open!!), there were more dogs than people on the beach! If this is a rule, it should be more clearly signed - or, given most people clearly ignore it, just forgotten about (our preference!).

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback.
The beach is private and dogs are not allowed, unfortunately some people seem to ignore this rule, if the dog warden is about this will result in a fine.
We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay.

The most stunning spot, the views and walks were stunning and for once when they say next to the beach, they actually mean it! Really only a few minutes walk and nice pub right by the beach, Anazibg lobster at reasonable price.

    Disliked:

The very narrow lane (Only one way in and out), we left really early to avoid meeting an oncoming car as we have fairly large camper, we met a white delivery van, still don't know how my partner got passed but took ten minuets of both driver trying hard to move tiny moves at at time, neither driver or passengers could get out to guide so just kept trying. So would not recommend visiting this site with large campers or caravans. Great though if tenting

From the manager...

Dear Elizabeth, thank you for your feedback.
We are working with landowners to have more passing points cut in to the lane.
Please visit our sister site at Highlands End which can accommodate larger vans.

Location, very clean facilities, and great idea having the fish & chip van on a Saturday.
    Grounds kept immaculate.

    Disliked:

Not enough showers can see it would be a problem busy times.
Pitches for tents on too much of a slope in top field near facilities, Did not like the field tents would normally be sent to, too far from facilities.

From the manager...

Dear Heidi, thank you for your feedback we are pleased that you like the location and found our grounds to be so tidy. Hope to see you again.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pit stop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country.

A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips, seafood cafés and locally caught fish to go with your chips, or getting active with paragliding, climbing, golf or diving.

The park is two miles from the town of Bridport with its famous market introduced in the 16th century by Good Queen Bess – go along on Wednesdays or Saturdays for bargains in clothes, antiques and local produce and make that the kickstart of a shopping trip also covering Dorchester, Sherborne and Beaminster.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, see the inhabitants at Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park or get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park.

After a trip to one (or more) of these, they might not moan too much when you go to one of the more grownup West Dorset attractions: try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum, before relenting and taking the sprogs to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.
