General

  • Part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • 150 metres from a shingle beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Traverse down to Dorset and Golden Top, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – set in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Pitches overlook the sea or the coastal hills, and amenities at the park are excellent overall – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room, a gym and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Very good site, clean modern facilities very much enjoyed our stay.

    Disliked:

Tent field is on a slope and is quite exposed to wind, but then a lot of camping grounds are the same and this is only being very picky.

You can pitch where you like which was good. The field was big, so plenty of space to choose where you would like to live! The toilets were new and cleaned regularly, the staff were super friendly and helpful and it was a short walk to the beach and the pub (which was very handy!)

    Disliked:

We didn't realise until we were putting the final pegs in that we were right near the water board! From time to time it got a bit smelly.
Just pick another pitch.... plenty of field to choose from.

Big Berry field - beautiful 14/08/2017

If you like traditional field camping but with modern amenities then Big Berry field at Golden Cap is perfect. The sheer scope of the field is fantastic, it's a vast and undulating space with plenty of level pitches and stunning views on all sides, there's a shortish (depending where in the field you pitch up) walk to a beautiful and brand new facilities block that would grace a 4* hotel.

We pitched on the north east border of Big Berries adjacent to the cornfield about half way up. couple of mins walk to the facilities and about 10 to the beach) and really enjoyed the experience.

All the staff we met were friendly and the shop sells pretty much everything you might need - and at reasonable prices. The Pub on the beach is also worth a visit - great food!

    Disliked:

Not sure this is a dislike really but here goes - there is (as others have mentioned) a small waste treatment plant on the far corner of the field - however this was only noticeable when walking directly past it en route to the showers etc. We were camped a hundred meters or so up the field and would not have known it was there except for the comments on here.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pit stop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country.

A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips, seafood cafés and locally caught fish to go with your chips, or getting active with paragliding, climbing, golf or diving.

The park is two miles from the town of Bridport with its famous market introduced in the 16th century by Good Queen Bess – go along on Wednesdays or Saturdays for bargains in clothes, antiques and local produce and make that the kickstart of a shopping trip also covering Dorchester, Sherborne and Beaminster.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, see the inhabitants at Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park or get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park.

After a trip to one (or more) of these, they might not moan too much when you go to one of the more grownup West Dorset attractions: try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum, before relenting and taking the sprogs to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.
