Chettle Campsite: Bell tents

General

  • Quiet, simple and spacious site in rural Dorset surroundings
  • In the small village of Chettle; 10 minutes' drive to Blandford Forum
  • A well-stocked shop, modern restaurant and pub all within a short walk

Sitting on the outskirts of a quiet village, Chettle Campsite is where to go for an abundance of space and immediate access to the rolling Dorset downlands.

It's a great spot for walking, as the site directly adjoins the gorgeous Jubilee Way trail and is close to lots of other paths that spindle out through Cranborne Chase and the Chalke Valley. Once you've arrived, you'll have little need for a car on many days, as the village centre's well-stocked shop and modern restaurant (open for dinner six nights weekly and for lunch four times weekly) can take care of all of your wants and needs. You're also about a mile from The Museum, a popular pub in the village next door.

The site also has an 'outpost' shop that stocks treats for breakfast and ice to keep drinks cool. On busier days, site staff sell coffee in the mornings and wood-fired pizzas on the weekends. Please note that barbecues are allowed but must not be disposable, so bring a firepit or camping stove if you're planning on cooking for yourself.

Dogs are welcome, but please make sure that they're kept on a lead at all times (for the sake of the sheep in neighbouring fields). For young guests, there’s a simple kids’ play area with giant hay bales on site plus the village playground just down the road. Leisure activities include morning yoga classes, foraging walks, and guided treks (for a small extra fee; all proceeds are fed back into the local community).

The facilities are simple but well-maintained, with composting toilets, showers, and washing-up sinks available.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Reception is unmanned after 8 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Loved how the site is layed out, that there's so much space, an emphasis on a real countryside feel and not commercial. It's a great place to socialise and meet people while also giving everyone enough space for real privacy.

It's great that there's no electricity and we met some parents who said how great it was to see their kids socialising and playing and not staring at screens! It also gave us a great opoertunity for stargazing around the fire pits!

    Disliked:

The British weather could have upped its game! But the evenings were stunning!

Location, great central location for exploring the area. Good space between tents, fire pit for cooking, central communal fire pit lit a couple of times a week if you fancy a chat. Friendly owners, compost toilets use the left ones as the breeze makes it more pleasant really not an issue. Local kids play area and small shop with nice pies. Furnished tent had all we needed to cook and sleep.

    Disliked:

Only staying 4 days intend to come back lovely time had by all great for kids we had 0yrs, 3yr and 6yr old. Bring a travel potty for the young ones made life easy.

The site is beautiful and we all loved the village farm shop which is just a short 5-minute walk from the site.

Everyone was very welcoming and friendly.

A huge fire pit is in the centre of the site which everyone can air around in the evenings. A great way to socialise with others staying.

Each pitch has a dug out pit in the ground and each evening you can purchase seasoned logs from the site manager.

There are 2 outdoor sinks with running warm water for washing up which was great for those (me) who forgot to bring a washing up bowl.

    Disliked:

The address on the pitch up site is not correct and took us to a different location. Use Google maps.

I loved the idea of the compost toilets as it is clear the site try to be as eco friendly as possible but the reality of them was not great as not all guests followed the guidance leaving the toilets really smelly and often full of flies.

We were not able to drive very close to the tent as the centre of the pitch is preserved, however, with a bad back this meant a lot of trips carrying our belonging to and from the tent.

The showers are wooden cubicles in the corner of the site. They are open at the top and the water is not particularly warm so I would definitely recommend something warm to quickly get into if you are not a big fan of the cold mornings.

Beautiful location. The village is very quaint. I enjoyed the open air showers. The guys who run the site were helpful and welcoming. It was lovely to visit a site where fire pits were provided - not enough campsites allow fires.

Directions

Approaching Chettle from the A354, you will see signposts for Chettle Shop and The Castleman. Turn into the village, passing both the shop and the Castleman on your left. Follow the road around a sharp right-hand bend. The site entrance is on the right after approximately 100 yards. Please enter the site slowly, turning left and following the one-way system. Only drive on the perimeter track, not on the long grass.

Approaching Chettle from the north via Common Drove, Royal Tollard, or Farnham you will find yourselves on Millers Lane. There is a small crossroads from which the Campsite is signposted. Signposts for the campsite are on your right. Follow this road (which takes a sharp left after 0.25 miles) until you see the signposted campsite entrance on your left. Please enter the site via the left-hand lane.
