General

  • Grass pitches on a Devon smallholding with spectacular Dartmoor views
  • A 25-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park, 35 minutes to the beach
  • On Cycle Routes 3 and 27, and within five minutes of the Tarka Trail.

Dartmoor View has amazing views over Devon countryside to the south. A rural, adults-only site on a ten-acre smallholding, its grass pitches are surrounded by working farmland where sheep, horses graze peacefully. There's an abundance of wildlife, and easy access to bridleways and quiet lanes for exploring on foot.

Cyclists, this site is right on the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route, so it’s a clever spot for overnight stays, and the Tarka Trail (five minutes) is renowned as a family biking route with lots of scenic spots along the way. Anglers will also find much to like here, with fishing for salmon and brown trout in the Taw and Torridge rivers, and carp fishing at lakes close by (10 minutes).

In the sleepy village of Sheepwash (five minutes’ drive) there’s a handy community shop where you can stock up on supplies for the barbecue, and a great pub for those nights when you don’t want to cook. The market town of Hatherleigh (15 minutes) has a traditional market on Tuesday, where you can pick up local cheeses, pastries and bread, while Okehampton (25 minutes) is the best bet for serious shopping trips, with several sizeable supermarkets.

Basic facilities on site are limited to running water and portable loos.

Owner met us on arrival - we were the only ones staying so had the choice of pitches - this is a small site but the views are amazing. Toilet on site was clean. Quiet and peaceful just what we were looking for. We only stayed one night so didn’t explore the area as were on our way to another destination.

Large pitch area with lovely unspoiled view. Very pleasant owner. No light pollution so open starry skies, quiet, peaceful, gives a feeling of being close to nature. Seems to attract genuine Campers who respect other campers, plenty of space, peace, and although few facilities, very reasonably priced.

I spent three nights here in a small tent. I enjoyed the beautiful view and the amazing stars at night. Spacious pitches, all with a view of Dartmoor. The top of each pitch is slightly sloping, so I camped further down and it was level. I found Mary very helpful and friendly. She has two horses, a few sheep and a friendly dog. Full recycling facilities, including food waste was a bonus. One chemical toilet and a water tap. Pub food at the Half Moon Inn in Sheepwash is good and popular, so it is best to book ahead. Some footpaths nearby for pleasant walks and the Tarka Trail is only a couple of miles away. The site is described by others as peaceful, which it is, but it is not quiet! I think if you are inside a van, you will not notice, unlike a tent camper. It is a busy rural area and there is noise from the lanes from tractors, vans and cars, though they are a hundred metres from the field. Also other noises of modern rural life - cockerel, chainsaws, strimmers, for example. In the evening and at night, it is very quiet. I enjoyed my stay and stayed an extra night.

    Disliked:

Because this site is on top of a hill, it is quite windy. So it is more suited to small tents. Larger tents could struggle (depending on the wind strength). The hedges are not much help as the prevailing wind comes from the other direction.
