Spacious grass pitches

General

  • Peaceful adults-only site in Woolacombe, with sea views
  • Easy access to the traffic-free Tarka Trail for walks or bike rides
  • Dogs welcome; five minutes' drive from dog-friendly beach

You’re eying up a north Devon break, you’re not bringing the bairns, and you’re after a peaceful place for coastal jaunts and fresh-air outings. Europa Park could well be the base for you.

It’s an adults-only setup at this Woolacombe park, which means the grownups have the full run of the 15-acre site. Want to see the sea? You’re in luck – there are cracking coast views here, looking over the sandy beach and (should the cloud gods smile upon you) beyond to Lundy island.

Having seen the village from afar, you’ll note that it’s not actually that afar after all – a five-minute drive or healthy half-hour stroll will get you down there for supermarket supplies, pub meals or fish and chips (best eaten on the beach, of course). Ilfracombe and Croyde are within a 20-minute drive if you fancy a change of sea view, and Barnstaple’s half an hour away for bigger-town needs.

Europa’s more about chilled-out beers and barbecues than discos and drinking dens: this quiet park’s facilities simply provide good-quality essentials. Bathroom blocks have hot showers and free toilets, and there’s a washing-up area and chemical toilet disposal point.

Got a mutt making eyes at you to be included in the seaside sojourn? Happy news – they’re welcome to join you, not only at the park but also down at the dog-friendly beach.

Please note

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The views are stunning, who wouldn't like waking up to see the bay. Staff are all very friendly and lots of work going into improvements around the site. The beach is 20 min walk away but as we only stayed one night we didn't get a chance to venture too far.

    Scott the nightwatchman...

    Disliked:

Arrived having travelled up from Cornwall looking forward to using good facilities as we'd spent the previous night without. Then the disappointment set in. Having opened the rotting wooden door to the washroom facilities the cold hit us. No heating. One look at the tired showers and decor and not being able to wash my hands properly as there was no soap in the dispensers saw us scuttling back to the motor home to wash up there. Packing up the following morning I obviously had need to empty the cassette and found the chemical waste disposal...which was unusable as it was overflowing with a disgusting brown liquid. I didn't get close enough to identify what it was!!! There was no grey water disposal point (that I could find) so we left for our final destination un-serviced and £37 lighter. I've taken photos if anyone's interested and a refund would be the order of the day.

Local attractions

Where to start? Well, at Woolacombe beach. It’s a mere five minutes away by car, and a fab place to spend a day. It’s often to be found up at the top of lists of the nation’s fave beaches, and locals are rather proud of their ice creams too (so it would be rude not to try at least… well, all of them).

If you fancy working up an appetite for your sweet treat, surf schools in town can help you brush up your board skills. Keen wave-catchers will no doubt already recognise the names Croyde and Saunton Sands – both are super surf spots, and both are within a 20-minute drive. Even if you can’t get close to any sort of standing position, you’ll be welcome at the Museum of British Surfing (15 minutes away).

For further leisurely lungfuls of fresh air, a top pick nearby is the Tarka Trail, a traffic-free route that follows some of the journeys described in Henry Williamson’s popular book Tarka the Otter. A grand total of 163 miles await if you want to do the whole thing, so perhaps just plan to pick out a short sections, starting from Woolacombe, Ilfracombe or Barnstaple.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (15.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (8.9 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (11.4 miles)
