The owners were great, could not have been any more helpful.
Only a few tent pitches, which kept the site quiet.
The site is basic but it has all I needed.

    Disliked:

Would have liked hot water but the shower was hot.

Fantastic safari tent, beautiful location and friendly owners 26/08/2016

  • Liked:

We really liked the lovely large safari tent with awning so we could sit out even if it was drizzly (there was just two of us staying but you could easily fit more people in). There were beautiful views from our tent of the vineyard over to Dartmoor and the owners were friendly and created a relaxed camping atmosphere.
We enjoyed the wine tour and would recommend the green finch white wine! There is also lots to do nearby- we went on some lovely walks around Dartmoor and cycled to the beach along the tarka trail. It was a great holiday, thank you!

Additionally, the compost toilet was kept very clean and there wasn't a queue even when the site was busy as there was a chemical loo also available.

Local attractions

There aren't too many places like Winkleigh left in Britain. It’s a small quiet thatched Devon village with a central square and two pubs, but it’s also almost self-sufficient! Thanks to the old World War II airfield, it is home to all kinds of industry and craft.

Winkleigh Pine recycles old timber into furniture, and Winkleigh Cider makes one of the west’s best. Winkleigh is the centre of thatch growing and selling in Devon, and there’s a vet, fishmonger, two pubs, four cafés, a farm shop, a doctor’s surgery, a hardware store, a builder’s yard, two garages, the Devon Wine Shack and even a cactus shop! If you're not too fashion minded - you need never shop elsewhere!

All this means that Winkleigh is not a commuter village or retirement centre, but an old-fashioned living community.

Not only this but, because of the traditional local farming, it is an excellent place to see all kinds of wildlife, especially birds - goshawks, golden plover, lapwing, skylarks, flocks of starlings, finches, heron, barn owls, summer swallows and many other.

Both Dartmoor and Exmoor are easy to visit from here, as are beautiful parts of the Devon and Cornish coast.

RHS Rosemoor is 10 miles away.
