General

  • Relaxed camping on a small seasonal site on a south Devon working farm
  • Spectacular setting surrounded by 20 acres of woodland and meadows
  • Firepits encouraged: buy fresh farm produce on site

Chittlesford Mill Farm Camping is a small site on a working farm in south Devon, in an area of spectacular Devon countryside and sunrises.

The small native woodland trees offer some privacy and a great natural playground for kids; there's also a small pond to explore. Some of the land is very wild, so is excellent for nature spotting: bring long trousers and wellies if you really want to go exploring 'off piste'. The site is surrounded by 20 acres of land including woodland, fish ponds and meadows and is great for anyone who likes to play outdoors and explore nature.

The farm is roomy but only has a small number of pitches as its facilities are limited, and because the owners want to keep numbers low to create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Fires in the designated firepits are encouraged.

The owners farm sheep and cattle and at certain times of the year there are lambs, calves, pigs and chickens. Two dogs who are very good with children are also on site and the owners welcome other well-behaved dogs. Please keep your dogs on leads as this is a working farm with livestock nearby.

Homegrown lamb, beef, pork, veg and eggs are for sale (depending on what's in stock). A village shop is a five-minute drive away and two garages for late night supplies. The towns of Totnes and Dartmouth are a 10 to 15-minute drive away.

Pubs close by include the Maltsters Arms and the Watermans Arms, both five minutes away.

The site has a cold running water tap but no utility area.

Directions

From the town of Totnes take the A381 south for 5 miles. The farm is 3 minutes past the village of Harberton Ford. The entrance is on the right from this direction and is at the bottom of a hill. The farmhouse is yellow.

From Kingsbridge or Dartmouth follow signs towards Totnes on the A381. The farm is on the left 3 minutes past the village of Halwell. The entrance is next to a lay-by, the farmhouse is yellow and can be seen from the road.

Please be aware that to get to the site you will need to drive past the farmhouse and through the working farm. It is not sterile and you will see tractors, agricultural buildings and farm detritus. The owners only moved in in 2017 so are still tidying and planting trees. Although the site is in a gorgeous location, in a young woodland and hay field, the owners would like to say to guests to please don't be put off by the drive past the barn and do come back in the future to benefit from all the hard work they are putting in making the approach better for the future.

Please be aware that the track to the site is bumpy and you may not be able to drive right up to your pitch. The powners will endeavour to help you with kit lifts in their 4x4 if you need. They are also happy for you to leave your car further down the track in a parking area if you are unsure.
