General

  • Relaxing park on the Devon/Cornwall border
  • Heated indoor pool, spa and therapy cabin
  • Regular hog roasts throughout the year

It’s a stonkingly safe bet that any site listed as having an ‘infrared therapy cabin’ is going to be one where you can relax and get away from it all.

Woodovis Park, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Devon/Cornwall border, has this in spades: relaxed but with Devon delights just on the doorstep, no road noise, beautiful beaches within easy reach, plenty of active options nearby, a heated indoor pool and spa on site, and, the topping on the Devonshire cake – fresh bread, croissants and pain au chocolate all baked daily for the on-site licensed shop.

Activities on site include archery, waterwalking, visits from international storyteller Clive PiG once a week during school holidays, and twice-weekly circus skills workshops in high season. A wood-chipped play area and games room is there for the small people, as well as a nature trail, outdoor table tennis and a pétanque court to ping about on.

Dogs will also have a barkingly good time here, as Woodovis is dog-friendly and has a dedicated dog walking area as well as Lower Meadow, the site's ‘specially for pups’ field where pooches can run off the lead. (There’s a dog wash area on site too, although perhaps tails won’t be wagging too much at that.)

Facilities at this safe, family-friendly and environmentally-friendly park include a free wifi zone in the games room and chargeable wifi available throughout, twinkingly clean loos and free hot showers, a parent and baby washroom, a launderette and – blessedly – a bath for soaks in blissful solitude. An additional individual toilet is in the Tamar View Field.

A traditional pub with good food is around half a mile’s walk away, but takeaway hog roast is available on site on Monday and Wednesday evenings throughout the year, serving local meat, fresh bread, and handmade sauces.

But back to that therapy cabin. The infrared rays here are used as part of a targeted deep heat treatment to warm the back’s blood vessels – soothe all your non-holiday stresses here before splashing about in the heated pool with the family or taking in a bit more relaxation in the spa room. Well, you can never have too much relaxing…

From the manager...

Hi Paul, many thanks for taking the time and trouble to post your review. We're really pleased that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for recommending it to friends and we do hope that you can come back to stay again some time. Sorry about the grass cutting, but as you can imagine, we have a rotating schedule of cutting different areas and, depending upon the weather, we just have to get everywhere cut at least once a week. Suffice to say, we have one rule about it, no cutting before 10am or after 5pm.... but I'm afraid in-between, we just have to fit it in as and when possible! I hope you understand! ;O)

It's lovely that the tweeting birds get a mention, it's such a lovely time of year and we're always chuffed when our guests appreciate the birds as much as we do! We're so happy your little'uns enjoyed the Easter egg hunt too! Hopefully you'll be able to visit us again in the next school holidays for more fun! ;O)

This site has everything going for it, peaceful, spotless, dog friendly, lovely wardens and relaxing. Even with a 25ft motor home we found it very easy to go visiting local towns, thanks to the very useful leaflets handed to us when we arrived. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Impressive entrance to the site; tree lined avenue projects quality. Spacious pitches with lush green environment. Friendly helpful staff, who took time to remember names and used them throughout our stay, including our grandson's. Site is spotless with real attention to detail. Lovely pool, if a little on the small side. Evening entertainment for children was well thought out, and the games room was well equipped with games as well as local information. Very dog friendly; little touches like dog mess bags and a dog wash area demonstrate the care taken to accommodate customers and keep the site clean. Free WiFi for 30 minutes daily.

    Disliked:

Lack of an adjacent bus stop/route means that, if you want to see Tavistock or the Moors, you need to walk, use your own transport or hire bikes. If in a Motor Home this means not unpacking until you have completed local visits, and if you have children under 12 years old then the bikes for hire at the site are not an option (understandably). Bit pricey having regard for the lack of adult entertainment, which in our view could be easily located at the Boules area.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for posting your review, we're really pleased you enjoyed your stay with your grandson and that the children's activities went down well for him. You're so right, it is a shame we don't have a bus-stop at the end of our drive, it's on our wish list, but sadly out of our control! The electric bikes for hire just gives adults a option for that kind of adventure! As for adult entertainment - no plans along those lines, just a sleepy place once the children go back to school, that's just what we aim for! We do hope that you will visit again next time you're down our way though! ;O)

Friendly staff, were they on happy pills?? Nothing too much trouble.
Nice range of extras such as circus, hog roast etc
    Peaceful location
Well laid out site which was good value

    Disliked:

Pitches could be a little bigger and ours was in shade for most of the day.
Another toilet block on the Tamar View field. Very long walk to main block, especially for the campers.
Pool supervision-I counted 32 in there at one point. It's supposed to accomodate 18
Some speed signs would improve safety. Some people were a little speedy. Also, I would recommend making the Tamar View field one way which would be easily done with a few signs.

From the manager...

Thank you for posting your review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and promise that the staff aren't on happy pills!! Plenty of cake - maybe - you can never have too much cake! ;O)

It's really unusual for the pool to be so overcrowded, our guests are normally really considerate and we do explain to everyone that we don't have a life-guard, so, as a rule, parents take responsibility and don't generally cause overcrowding.

With regard to people speeding, we have considered additional signage but all our research concludes that the more signs you put up the less notice people take of them. it just takes one driver to be speedy. We will always address this if we see it though, with so many little children around it doesn't happen often.

With regard to the toilet block, with one large enough already able to easily cope with demand it would not be possible in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to get planning permission for a second. That said, we did manage to get a single toilet put into the entrance of the Tamar View field a couple of years ago, so at least no one needs to walk more than 100 yards to one.

We really appreciate your feedback which is important to us. We are of course delighted that you would visit us again and that you would recommend us to your friends. We very much look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Local attractions

First on your must-do list should be a trip to nearby Tavistock, market town and home of the cream tea; browse around the regular farmers’ markets to pick up the best Devonshire produce.

To walk all that food off, you’re only a short drive from Dartmoor with its walking, cycling and horse riding trails, or other active options including tree-surfing and canoeing are nearby.

Those for whom a holiday wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the beach will be in sandy heaven, with some of the best beaches in the country easily reachable by car: bounce around the rock pools at Bovisand, get sand between your toes at Seaton, or explore the several small beaches at Talland Bay.

For historical highlights, the National Trust’s Castle Drogo has gardens and a gorge-ous view over the Teign Gorge. Or have a go at family walks and bike rides at Plymbridge, a look at Sir Francis Drake’s former home Buckland Abbey, or a visit to Dartmoor’s Lydford Gorge, the deepest in the south west and with a waterfall 30 metres high.
