General

  • Westcountry base with easy access to the A38
  • On the southern side of Dartmoor National Park
  • Family run for over 20 years

What a Westcountry base is . (And if you don’t find a veritable heap of attractions and activities to your tastes all around, you might not find it anywhere.)

Pitch up here with easy access to the A38 and to be to be among the wild, the rugged and the scenic sights of the southern side of Dartmoor National Park, but also close to the beaches, cities and villages of the Devon coastline – Bigbury-on-Sea is nine miles away and Torquay, Paignton and Plymouth about 17 miles to the east and west. It all sounds chest lovely…

Also worth an honourable mention are the waterfalls, vintage railways, theme parks, old old buildings, horse riding, birdwatching and a whole heap more to see and do all around the vicinity, all from an exceedingly peaceful wildlife haven with amenities so immaculately maintained they’d pass muster anywhere.

Sticking on site, lie back to gaze at the stars of an evening, or laze around during the day to see red kites, buzzards, great-spotted woodpeckers and the park's own menagerie of two cats, a family of guinea pigs and over a dozen chickens.

Off-site, wavering on what to do in the area first/next? The exceedingly amiable team at have been welcoming guests to the Westcountry for over 20 years and can send guests on or off the beaten track as requested.

Booked last minute (that morning) on a bank holiday weekend so very grateful we could find somewhere. We have campervan and drive away awning so booked a hard standing with grass pitch (with electric hook up). The site is great, clean toilets and shower facilities, they have a large grass area for kids to run around on and it is in the perfect position to visit the local beach, castles and zoo's etc. Really good, highly recommended for no frills camping.

    Disliked:

Maybe a few more toilets and showers but nothing bad to say.

From the manager...

Dear Scott, Thank you for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. It was nice to have such friendly people visting our site. Thank you for feedback regarding the toilet/shower block, I'm afraid we are limited to the amount of toilets and showers due to restrictions made by the National Park. We hope we may see you again in the future.

Clean little site which is very quiet and peaceful.

    Disliked:

Lady who runs site is a jobs worth very bossy & interfering who walked straight into our awning on first morning before 9am to give us our invoice which we thought was very rude.

Toilet/Shower block is a joke as there is one toilet & shower in both men's and ladies to serve the whole site, men's has two sinks with two urinals closely facing them so when I was having a wash and brushing my teeth on first morning there was a man back to back using the urinal which I found disgusting. Toilet blocks are very old and dated and not that clean either.

Although the site excepts children they are NOT allowed to play with a football and there is no play area at all so it's very boring for young ones.

Dogs are also excepted when booking until you get there then there's signs every where stating your dog must not foul this site or you will be asked to leave, not good when your also not allowed to park any vehicle by your caravan or tent so if your dog fouls site on way to your car then watch out. We were told point blank to exercise our dog in a different field but were not told where that was and don't think there was one.

Upon booking we were not aware in the description your camping literally right next to a busy railway line which trains use at high speed.

    No shop on site

Think you've guessed by now we were not impressed and will definitely not go back as it's the poorest site we've used so far.

We stayed on this camping for two nights. The owners are a friendly couple who make you feel very welcome! The spot where we were standing was nice. Sanitairy was good. Two toilets and one shower with unlimited hot water (ladies).
The washing-up area was okay. Water not very warm.

    Dogs are welcome!

The camping is situated in Dartmoor National Park and for beautiful walks you can go to Lady's Wood (10 minutes walk).

When you want to play golf, you can go to the golfcourse nearby.

The site is lovely and private with good privacy and good allocated space.
It's our first ever camp site so we've been impressed with the friendly owners and the facilities. Well behaved dog allowed.
Met a lovely family with children and gained a new pen friend.

    Disliked:

Being immediately adjacent to a busy & noisy railway line.
I understand why you'd not mention it in any site description but feel it should be mentioned so that the consumer can make that choice!!
Otherwise it was a good visit.
    No wi-fi

From the manager...

Dear Dave, Thank you for your review. We are glad to hear that you found the site lovely and private. We are also happy to know that you were impressed with the facilities available. This must have been what motivated you to stay another with us. We are always happy to accommodate people with well-behaved dogs. We are also so happy that you have made a new pen friend during your visit, hopefully you may meet again here as you said you would be returning again as the site was so lovely.

The reason we do not mention the train is because in the 26 years we have owned the site we have found most of our guests do not find it a disturbance as it is infrequent and doesn’t run through the night, also we have done our best to block the little noise by screening of the trees.

Wi-Fi is free and available at all times, if you were having any problems we wish you had come and asked for help.

Came here for a 4 night stay.. As a family of four with our two daughters who are 10 and 12 and what a fantastic time we had the Guinea pigs run wild so the girls had fun following them around.. This site is a very quiet park.. Ellice and her husband made us feel very welcome from the minute we booked our stay.. They couldn't do anything more to make us feel welcome.. If there were any problems they were sorted very promptly and they even came round every day to see how we all were and would make the time to come and chat... We came down for the firework championships in Plymouth city centre... We will definitely be back to this site.

Thanks again Ellice and family for making our stay a very enjoyable and pleasant one. See you again soon

Pretty well kept site, with basic but clean toilet facilities. Very friendly couple who took the time to ask us what we wanted and sited us in a very nice spot.

    Disliked:

A couple of days there was no toilet rolls or hot water on site.
Some train noise as railway line runs very close to site, but soon got used to it and it didn't spoil anything for us. A light sleeper might find this a challenge.

From the manager...

Dear Guest. We are sorry to hear that your stay with us wasn't satisfactory and that you wouldn't consider visiting us again. We are very surprised to read that you found no toilet rolls or hot water (twice). Here at Cheston we pride ourselves on ensuring that all facilities are clean and managed accordingly this involves cleanliness checks and ensuring items such as toilet rolls are readily available and if there should be any issues we have displayed a sign encouraging visitors to inform us so we can assist and promptly rectify any problems. We wish that you would have informed us of the issues you were experiencing.

Local attractions

Dartmoor should take up at least a few days – have happy ambles around the wooded valleys and the old-style Dartmoor villages, or get active hiking, biking and horse riding among the park’s 450 miles of paths, tracks and open moorland. Then, perhaps, some pony petting or hacking, some tor climbing and a bit of cooing at the dwellers of Dartmouth Zoological Park…

Also in Dartmoor (maybe make room for a few more days), drop along to Becky Falls, one of the best known sites of the moors, and cascade to Canonteign Falls in the Teign Valley, the highest waterfall in England.

And then travel along to the River Dart for boat trips along its waters or a puff on the always popular South Devon Railway, stopping off at Dartmoor attractions along the way like Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies (find the start of the railway at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38 near Buckfast Abbey).

Go east from Cheston to arrive at Dartmouth, Paignton and Torquay (and maybe make room for a few more days). As you’ll probably be expected back from holiday at some point, you might have to restrain your eager self here to one sight in each: let the kids go wild at Woodlands Theme Park in Dartmouth; chatter among the 2000 or so animals among six different habitats at Paignton Zoo; and delve into the prehistoric sights of Kents Cavern at Torquay.

To the north and inland from Torquay et al is Exeter, also essential for a day out if you’re in these parts – and stop off at Exmouth on the way while you’re at it. More underground amblings are here at Exeter's Underground Passages, the tunnels that shifted clean water along their pipes to the homes of medieval Exeter; above ground, historyheads can take a look at Powderham Castle six miles to the south.
